    Nokia Signs Deal With Bharti Airtel To Deploy Next-Gen ‘Optical Transport Network’ To Provide Superior Services for Customers

    New Delhi, November 21: Nokia on Tuesday announced it has entered into an agreement with Bharti Airtel to deploy a next-generation optical transport network (OTN) that will provide additional capacity, higher reliability and lower cost, enabling superior services for Airtel’s customers. Under the agreement, Airtel will utilise Nokia’s ‘1830 PSS-x OTN’ switches in its National Long-Distance Network connecting major cities across India.

    “As a world leader in OTN, our technology will help Airtel to increase the capacity and features of Bharti’s optical transport network to meet growing bandwidth demand driven by the enterprise and hyperscaler segments.     The increased capacity will enable Airtel to potentially deliver faster and more reliable broadband services and be ready for new use cases, Nokia said. According to the company, its OTN solution enables Bharti Airtel to seamlessly upgrade its legacy transport switching infrastructure across its pan-Indian network footprint to meet new transport network traffic demands while improving both the performance and reliability of its network.

    To address this exponential growth in traffic demand, transport networks need to be upgraded to increase overall transport capacity and bandwidth efficiency using high-capacity OTN switching and utilising additional spectrum, including the L-band wavelengths of the fibre, it added.

  • Samsung Signs $1 Billion 5G Deal With US Network Operator Dish

    San Francisco: US network operator Dish has picked Samsung to supply 5G network solutions in a multi-year deal worth over $1 billion. Samsung will deploy 5G Open Radio Access Network solutions across DISH Wireless SMART 5G network. The companies will collaborate to deploy Samsung’s 5G solutions and radio units in markets across the US, supporting DISH’s 5G commercial services. Samsung Galaxy Book Laptops Launched in India Starting at Rs 38,990.

    “Samsung’s 5G solutions will play an integral role in our network expansion, giving us the flexibility to deploy our cloud-native network with software-based solutions that support advanced services and operational scalability,” said John Swieringa, president and chief operating officer, DISH Wireless.

    In 2020, Samsung grabbed a deal worth $6.6 billion from US carrier Verizon to supply 4G and 5G network equipment.

    “Samsung is excited to join this 5G journey with DISH, a pioneer in bringing new experiences to households and businesses around the country, leveraging openness and virtualisation that sit at the heart of network evolution,” said Mark Louison, executive vice president and head of the Networks Business, Samsung Electronics America.

    DISH is currently testing its 5G network using the Samsung Galaxy S22, and plans to continue using Samsung phones as a reference platform throughout the network deployment process.

  • Saturn’s Death Star Moon Hides Underground ‘Stealth’ Ocean Worlds With Possible Signs of Life

    New Delhi, January 21: Scientists have discovered an underground ocean buried beneath the surface of the Death Star-like moon of Saturn, paving the way for a new class of “stealth” ocean worlds with possible signs of life.

    The team at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in the US set out to prove that the tiny, innermost moon of Saturn — Mimas — was a frozen inert satellite and instead discovered compelling evidence that Mimas has a liquid internal ocean.

    In the waning days of NASA’s Cassini mission, the spacecraft identified a curious libration, or oscillation, in the moon’s rotation, which often points to a geologically active body able to support an internal ocean. Life on Mars? NASA’s Curiosity Rover Finds Carbon Signature on Mars.

    “If Mimas has an ocean, it represents a new class of small, ‘stealth’ ocean worlds with surfaces that do not betray the ocean’s existence,” said SwRI’s Dr Alyssa Rhoden, a specialist in the geophysics of icy satellites, particularly those containing oceans.

    One of the most profound discoveries in planetary science over the past 25 years is that worlds with oceans beneath layers of rock and ice are common in the solar system. Such worlds include the icy satellites of the giant planets, such as Europa, Titan and Enceladus, as well as distant planets like Pluto.

    “Because the surface of Mimas is heavily cratered, we thought it was just a frozen block of ice,” Rhoden said. “It turns out that ‘Mimas’ surface was tricking us, and our new understanding has greatly expanded the definition of a potentially habitable world in our solar system and beyond.”

    The team also found that the heat flow from the surface was very sensitive to the thickness of the ice shell, something a spacecraft could verify. For instance, the Juno spacecraft is scheduled to fly by Europa and use its microwave radiometer to measure heat flows in this Jovian moon.

    This data will allow scientists to understand how heat flow affects the icy shells of ocean worlds such as Mimas, which are particularly interesting as NASA’s Europa Clipper approaches its 2024 launch. Jupiter-Like Planet Named TOI-2180 b Spotted by NASA Citizen Scientist.

    The discovery would “help us better understand Saturn’s rings and mid-sized moons as well as the prevalence of potentially habitable ocean moons, particularly at Uranus. Mimas is a compelling target for continued investigation,” said Rhoden, is co-leader of NASA’s Network for Ocean Worlds Research Coordination Network.

    The Apple CEO reportedly forged the five-year agreement, which has not been previously reported, “during the first of a series of in-person visits he made to the country in 2016 to quash a sudden burst of regulatory actions against Apple’s business,” according to internal Apple documents viewed by The Information.

    “Before the meetings, Apple executives were scrambling to salvage the company’s relationship with Chinese officials, who believed the company wasn’t contributing enough to the local economy, the documents show. Amid the government crackdown and the bad publicity that accompanied it, iPhone sales plummeted,” the report said late on Tuesday.

    The report alleged that Cook “personally lobbied officials” in China over threats made against Apple Pay, iCloud and the App Store. Apple was yet to comment on the report. The report further alleged that in an aim to “mollify” authorities, Apple announced an investment of $1 billion in Didi Chuxing.

    Shortly after, Cook, along with Apple COO Jeff Williams and government affairs head Lisa Jackson allegedly met senior government officials in Zhongnanhai, the central headquarters of the Communist Party of China, GizmoChina reported, citing The Information.

    As part of the agreement, Apple reportedly promised to use more components from Chinese suppliers in its devices, sign deals with Chinese software firms, collaborate on technology with Chinese universities and directly invest in Chinese tech companies. The company has also promised to invest “many billions of dollars more” than its current expenditure in China, including on new retail stores, research and development facilities and renewable energy projects.

    San Francisco: Invite-only audio chat app Clubhosue has struck a deal with TED to bring exclusive talks on its platform starting Monday.     It’s still not clear if the chats will be available as podcasts or other on-demand recordings. The first TED Talks room was set to arrive on Clubhouse on Monday, and additional rooms will be launched soon via TED’s Clubhouse club. TED can now host regular Q&As and integrate audience interaction on  Clubhouse. TED has a growing podcast business, with over 1.65 million episode downloads per day.

    Clubhouse is also working on its own private messaging feature, at a time when companies like Facebook and Spotify are launching a copycat service to take on Clubhouse which has grown in popularity. The company accidentally leaked a private messaging feature called Backchannel to some users last month.

    Backchannel is likely to let users chat via text instead of audio, just like WhatsApp or Telegram.     Huawei Signs Patent License Agreement With Volkswagen Group’s Supplier: Report

    Shenzhen: Chinese conglomerate Huawei has reached a patent license agreement with a supplier of Volkswagen Group. According to reports, it was Luxembourg-based Rolling Wireless.     The deal covers 4G connectivity in the vehicles. The agreement includes a license under Huawei’s 4G standard essential patents (SEPs), which covers Volkswagen vehicles equipped with wireless connectivity. This agreement marks Huawei’s largest licensing deal in the automotive industry, the company said on a statement late on Wednesday.

    “As an innovative company, we own a leading patent portfolio for wireless technologies, which creates great value for the automotive industry. We believe this license will benefit worldwide consumers with our advanced technology,” said Song Liuping, Chief Legal Officer of Huawei.

    Over the past 20 years, Huawei has entered into more than 100 patent license agreements with major global companies across Europe, the US, Japan, and South Korea. After facing US sanctions, the company has said it needs to diversify in order to reverse a revenue decline. In April, the company reported first quarter sales were down 16.5 per cent, largely because Huawei sold off its Honor smartphone brand.
