  • Metrowater’s sewer network plan receives good response

Metrowater’s sewer network plan receives good response

‘Illanthorum inappu’, which was launched last month, allows residents to pay bills in 10 installments over five years after being given a home service connection as part of an underground sewer network.

In the last one fortnight, around 8,000 sewer connections have been provided in the added areas under the Metrotor scheme ‘Ilananthorum Inappu’.

The scheme, launched last month, allows residents to pay bills in 10 installments over five years after being given a house service connection as part of an underground sewer network.

Officials said the plan had received a lot of response as it was hassle-free and the work was completed in a few days. Generally, around 10,000 connections are provided to the city every year. However, the scheme enabled the sewer network to become increasingly functional.

Currently, the residents of Tiruvottiyur, Ambattur, Valasaravakkam and Sholinganallur opted for connections under the scheme. “After finishing the plan, we provide a notice to the residents about the connection and subsequently raise the bill. Earlier, it would take at least a month to provide a connection, including allowing road cuts.

The water agency plans to cover 10 areas including Perungudi, Karapakkam and Nolambur with 1,53,546 sewer connections in the next few months. It aims to reduce sewage pollution.

The project is being started in the first phase at a cost of ₹ 50 crore. A similar scheme is being run in the core areas under the ‘Azithal Inappu’ scheme, where sewer connections are provided on the basis of residents’ calls.

Residents of the Anna Nagar Western Extension said that the scheme should be extended to the water supply network as well. This will help people to get the connection without delay.

However, officials said sewer connections were preferred due to environmental and public health aspects. Water pipeline connections were more complex and will be considered in the next phase.
