  • TVs, ACs, Smartphones, Laptops To Get Costlier by Up to 10% in India Due to Russia-Ukraine War & China Lockdowns: Report

New Delhi: Consumer electronics manufacturers on Thursday said that the prolonged Russia-Ukraine war and China lockdowns will result in significant price hike in the prices of electronic goods by up to 7-10 per cent next month. Avneet Singh Marwah, CEO of Super Plastronics Pvt. Ltd, an exclusive brand licensee of Thomson, said that there has been a double impact on the industry by the Russia-Ukraine war and lockdowns in China. OnePlus India CEO Navnit Nakra Says Smart TVs Herald Connected Experiences for Indians.

“This is an alarming situation for the industry as there is a price increase in commodities like metal and petroleum. As a result there will be an impact of 7-10 per cent (in prices of electronic goods) next month,” Marwah told IANS.

Smartphones, laptops, TVs, ACs as well as imported watches are set to get costlier in the next few weeks. Industry experts said prices of these consumer goods could go up to 10 percent. According to Anand Dubey, CEO, Indkal Technologies Pvt. Ltd, they expect a significant impact if this is a prolonged war between Russia and Ukraine.

“They are the largest producers of some key minerals used as raw materials for manufacturing of chips. Chips have already been in shortage through the last 12 months and this further compounds the problem,” Dubey told IANS. “Even though we are taking measures to counter these issues, I think as an industry and as customers we should brace ourselves for a premium we will have to pay in the near future,” Dubey noted. All of this is definitely going to drive the price up of all types of electronics and appliances by varying degrees, he added.

The electronics sector has already been raising prices by 2-3 per cent every quarter owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. With supply chain disruptions, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies have also been forced to increase the prices of daily-use products.

  • Russia-Ukraine Cyber War: Hackers Breach Russian Space Research Site, Leak Mission Files

New Delhi, March 4: Cyber-criminals linked to Anonymous hacking group have broken into a website belonging to Russia’s Space Research Institute (IKI) and leaked files that allegedly belong to the Russian space agency Roscosmos.

In a tweet, Anonymous said: “Russian Space Agency hacked via v0g3lSec (http://uv.ikiweb.ru) still hacked as of this posting (archived)”. Russia’s Space Research Institute (IKI) designs and builds scientific instruments for space experiments.

“Heyyy Russian (homophobic slur).. Sorry.. Cosmonauts ??.. idk what to say, go get a nice website instead of threatening people with ISS, heard??” read a message on a section of the IKI-related site. US Senator Lindsay Graham Calls for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ‘Assassination’.

According to Vice, the mention of the ISS is referring to recent comments from Russian authorities around the possibility of pulling out from operation of the International Space Station. “Also leave Ukraine alone else Anonymous will f*** you up even more :))” the message added.

IKI did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The hack against Roscosmos came after another Anonymous-linked group made an unverified claim to have disabled Russian satellite control systems.

Earlier, the chief of Russia’s space agency, Roscosmos, warned hackers attempting to disrupt the operation of the country’s satellites that their actions could be construed as a “casus belli, i.e., an event that justifies a war”.

Rogozin’s comment came shortly after a cyberattack on Russia’s RKA Mission Control Center. The Roscosmos chief also threatened the people responsible that his corporation would identify them, and hand the data over to the Russian security services so that they could open a criminal investigation against the hackers. Russia-Ukraine War Live Updates: Fire at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant; Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Accuses Moscow of ‘Nuclear Terror’.

Earlier, several Telegram groups claimed that the NB65 hacker group, which is allegedly linked to Anonymous, had successfully breached Roscosmos’ communications with Russia’s satellites, RT reported.

  • Russia-Ukraine War: Bitcoin Now Has Higher Market Cap Than Russian Currency Ruble

New Delhi, March 2: As Russia intensifies its battle to take control of Ukraine, Bitcoin on Wednesday soared to $44,000, pushing the total cryptocurrency market cap to cross $2 trillion. With the recent gains, Bitcoin now has a higher market cap than the rapidly-declining Russian currency ruble.

Bitcoin has a market cap of approximately $835 billion while the ruble has a market cap of around $626 billion. The crypto market was last at $2 trillion in August 2021.

In the last week since the Russia-Ukraine war started, Bitcoin has jumped nearly 14 per cent and ethereum 12 per cent, according to CoinGecko data. Terra’s LUNA token had a stratospheric rise, climbing nearly 70 per cent during the last week, and is now trading at approximately $94. Russia Sets Ruble Exchange Rates to Prevent Crash: 101 Rubles for 1 Euro, 90 Rubles for One US Dollar.

Solana’s SOL and other layer 1 tokens like Avalanche’s AVAX and Polkadot’s DOT also responded well, reports CoinDesk. Similar to volatility, Bitcoin’s trading volume across major exchanges reached the highest level since the December 5 price crash, according to CoinDesk data.

Earlier, the global crypto market lost nearly 10 per cent of its value as Russia invaded Ukraine on Thursday. Over $200 billion worth of its global market value was wiped out.

The most-hit cryptocurrencies were Ethereum, Cardano, Avalanche, and Polkadot, along with Dogecoin and Shiba Inu. Some traders, however, expected the price bounce to be short-lived amid geopolitical uncertainty.

  • Russia-Ukraine War: Elon Musk’s Promised Starlink Terminals Reach Ukraine

New Delhi: As promised, Elon Musk-run SpaceX has sent a truck full of Starlink user terminals to Ukraine amid the Russian invasion. Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukrainian Vice Prime Minister, on Tuesday tweeted an image showing Starlink terminals in the country. Russia-Ukraine War: Meta Shuts Down Network Targeting Ukrainians With Fake News.

“Starlink – here. Thanks, @elonmusk” he tweeted, showing the back of a truck filled with Starlink terminals. “You are most welcome,” Musk replied. “Starlink service is now active in Ukraine. More terminals en route,” Musk had posted on Twitter.

The Tesla and SpaceX founder activated Starlink, his commercial Internet network, in Ukraine last week with “more terminals en route”. Musk’s SpaceX has thousands of Starlink satellites in orbit, which allow the company to beam broadband services around Earth, without the need for fiber-optic cables.

The satellites could keep Ukraine online if its Internet infrastructure is damaged by Russia’s attack. Musk’s move came in response to a plea by Fedorov, also Ukraine’s Minister of Digital Transformation, who called for help as Ukraine fought off an invasion and sustained cyberattacks by Russian forces.

“While you try to colonise Mars — Russia try to occupy Ukraine! While your rockets successfully land from space — Russian rockets attack Ukrainian civil people! We ask you to provide Ukraine with Starlink stations and to address sane Russians to stand,” Fedorov had tweeted to Musk.

SpaceX has thus far put more than 1,700 Starlink satellites into orbit, and the company plans on launching more than 40,000 in total.

  • Russia-Ukraine War: Meta Shuts Down Network Targeting Ukrainians With Fake News

New Delhi: Meta has taken down a network for targeting people in Ukraine who posed as news editors, aviation engineers and authors to spread misinformation around the Russian invasion across social media platforms. The people ran websites posing as independent news entities and created fake personas across social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Telegram and also Russian Odnoklassniki and VK apps, the company said late on Sunday. Russia-Ukraine War: After Facebook, Russia Blocks Twitter Amid Ukrainian Invasion.

“In the last 48 hours, we uncovered a relatively small network of about 40 accounts, Pages and Groups on Facebook and Instagram. They were operated from Russia and Ukraine and targeted people in Ukraine across multiple social media platforms and through their own websites,” said Nathaniel Gleicher, Head of Security Policy at Meta.

Meta took down this operation, blocked their domains from being shared on its platform, and shared information with other tech platforms, researchers and governments.

“When we disrupted this network on our platform, it had fewer than 4,000 Facebook accounts following one or more of its Pages and fewer than 500 accounts following one or more of its Instagram accounts,” Gleicher said.

This network used fake accounts and operated fictitious personas and brands across the internet — including on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Telegram, Odnoklassniki and VK — to appear more authentic in an apparent attempt to withstand scrutiny by platforms and researchers.

These fictitious personas used profile pictures likely generated using artificial intelligence techniques like generative adversarial networks (GAN). They claimed to be based in Kiev and posed as news editors, a former aviation engineer, and an author of a scientific publication on hydrography — the science of mapping water.

This operation ran a handful of websites masquerading as independent news outlets, publishing claims about the West betraying Ukraine and Ukraine being a failed state. Meta also announced a ‘Lock Your Profile’ tool that allows people to lock their Facebook profile in one step.

“When someone’s profile is locked, people who aren’t their friends can’t download, enlarge or share their profile photo, nor can they see posts or other photos on someone’s profile, regardless of when they posted it,” the company said.

  • Russia-Ukraine War: Russian Customers Barred From Using Apple, Google Pay Services After US Imposed Heavy Financial Sanctions

New Delhi/Moscow, February 27: Thousands of Russian customers have been barred from using Apple Pay and Google Pay services after the US imposed heavy financial sanctions on the country for invading Ukraine.

Customers at several banks in Russia reported they were unable to use their bank cards with Google Pay and Apple Pay. According to a statement by Russia’s Central Bank, customers of banks that fell under the sanctions (VTB Group, Sovcombank, Novikombank, Promsvyazbank, Otkritie) will not be able to pay with cards of these banks abroad.

“Also, the cards of these banks will not be able to be used with Apple Pay, Google Pay services, but standard contact or contactless payment with these cards is available in full throughout Russia,” the Central Bank informed.

Google Pay and Apple Pay aren’t as popular in Russia as they are in the US, The Verge reported late on Saturday. Russia’s most popular mobile payment service was the Russia-owned Sberbank Online, followed by YooMoney (formerly Yandex Money) and QIWI, two other Russian payment service providers. Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Agrees to talk with Russia in Belarus; Vladimir Putin Puts Nuclear Deterrence forces on Alert.

Last reported figures showed that 29 per cent of Russians use Google Pay while 20 per cent use Apple Pay. The US has put sanctions on Sberbank and VTB Bank, two of Russia’s biggest financial institutions, while the UK froze the assets of five Russian banks.

The White House has also announced that the US, joined by European nations and Canada, will remove some Russian banks from SWIFT, the payment system used for most international financial transactions.

  • Russia-Ukraine War: After Facebook, Russia Blocks Twitter Amid Ukrainian Invasion

New Delhi, February 27: After Facebook, Russia has now blocked Twitter to stifle the flow of information as its invasion of Ukraine escalates. Twitter said it is aware of the restriction being imposed on the platform in Russia.

“We’re aware that Twitter is being restricted for some people in Russia and are working to keep our service safe and accessible,” Twitter said in a tweet late on Saturday.

Internet monitoring group NetBlocks saw failed or heavily throttled connections across every major Russian telecom provider, including Rostelecom, MTS, Beeline, and MegaFon. Russia-Ukraine War: Facebook, YouTube And Twitter Bar Russian State Media From Running Ads, Monetising on Platform.

Russians are still able to access Twitter through VPN services, but direct connections are restricted, reports The Verge. “We believe people should have free and open access to the Internet, which is particularly important during times of crisis,” said Twitter.

Hit by partial restrictions, Meta (formerly Facebook) on Saturday said it is prohibiting Russian state media from running ads or monetising on its platform anywhere in the world. The additional steps in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine came after the country began to “partially restrict” access to Facebook.

Meta earlier criticised Russia’s move to restrict Facebook in the country, saying that it reacted in response to either Facebook’s fact-checking practices and its policy of labelling state-run media accounts.

  • Russia-Ukraine War: Facebook, YouTube And Twitter Bar Russian State Media From Running Ads, Monetising on Platform

Washington, February 27: Russia invaded Ukraine on Thursday and is carrying out military strikes across multiple cities, including capital Kiev, which has resulted in the death of many innocent civilians.

World leaders have condemned the invasion and the US said sanctions and other economic penalties on Russia would continue to escalate if the crisis does not cease.

As Russia’s invasion of Ukraine worsens, officials in the US, UK and the European Union are discussing further sanctions and other moves to target propaganda groups and people with huge audiences on the platform. Russia-Ukraine War: Russian Forces Blow Up Gas Pipeline in Kharkiv

As the crisis in Ukraine intensifies, social media companies have been scrambling to rein in misinformation and Russian state propaganda. Several social media platforms Like Google, Meta, Twitter and Youtube has demonetised Russian ads amid pressure from social media activists.  Russia-Ukraine War: US President Joe Biden Signs Memorandum For Military Aid to Ukraine As Russian Forces Close in on Kyiv

Facebook, on Friday said that it was prohibiting Russian state media from running ads or making money off its platform, worldwide, as the invasion of Ukraine intensifies. The announcement was met with approval from some while others questioned why the social media site wasn’t doing more.

Facebook’s head of security policy said it was applying labels to content from Russian state media in addition to demonetising.

A YouTube spokesperson said the company has removed hundreds of channels and thousands of videos over the past few days, including channels for coordinated deceptive practices. YouTube said Saturday that it will temporarily halt the ability of a number of Russian channels, including state-sponsored RT, to monetize their content on the platform.

It will also be “significantly limiting” recommendations to those channels, YouTube said in a statement. It is also restricting access to some of these channels in Ukraine.

Twitter, which banned advertising from state-controlled media in 2019, also took action, saying on Friday it was temporarily pausing all ads in Ukraine and Russia “to ensure critical public safety information is elevated and ads don’t detract from it.”

Google on Sunday barred Russia’s state-owned media outlet RT and other channels from receiving money for ads on their websites, apps and YouTube videos, similar to a move by Facebook after the invasion of Ukraine.

These responses from the social media giants comes in response to Russian President Vladimir Putin authorizing a full-scale attack on Ukraine on Thursday, involving launching airstrikes across the country and pushing forces into the country’s capital of Kyiv.
