New Delhi: After Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea, India’s largest mobile operator Reliance Jio on Sunday announced up to 21 per cent hike in its prepaid tariffs from the next month. Despite the increase in rates, Jio has kept the price of plans lower than Airtel and Vodafone Idea’s which is expected to continue pricing competition in the industry. Jio TV & Jio Tablet Likely To Debut Next Year: Report.

The company still has kept its lowest rate for 28 days validity plan at Rs 91 for Jiophone users which is the lowest among private telecom operators. Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea have increased the entry level plan with 28 days validity to Rs 99. The tariff hikes entail JioPhone Plan, Unlimited Plans, and data add on, and range between 19.6 per cent and 21.3 percent.

“In line with its commitment to further strengthen a sustainable telecom industry, where every Indian is empowered with a true digital life, Jio today announced its new unlimited plans. These plans will provide the best value in the industry,” Reliance Jio said in a statement.

The statement further said: “Upholding the Jio promise of providing the best-quality service at the lowest price globally, Jio customers will continue to be the biggest beneficiaries”.

The new unlimited plans will go-live on December 1, 2021, and can be opted from existing touchpoints and channels. The company announced tariff hikes across 15 plans which include one for JioPhone users, 11 in unlimited category and three in data top up category. In the unlimited plan category, Jio has increased the price of its cheapest plan with 28 days validity to Rs 155 from Rs 129. The cheapest unlimited category with 84 days validity will be priced at Rs 395 instead of 329 at present. The popular unlimited category plan offering daily 1.5 GB daily data usage with 84 days validity will go up by about 20 per cent to Rs 666 from Rs 555 at present.

The company has announced that its annual unlimited category plan offering 2 GB daily data usage at 4G speed will be priced at Rs 2,879 instead of 2,399 at present. Airtel and Vodafone Idea last week announced up to 25 per cent hike in their prepaid plans tariffs to improve financials.

Several market analysts had said that the final assessment of the impact can be done only when Jio opens up its card on price hike. Airtel and VIL have been maintaining that average revenue per user needs to go up in the range of Rs 200 to Rs 300 per month for sustaining business but they have been unable to hike tariff due to competitive pressure. Jio ARPU in the second quarter ended September 30, 2021 was Rs 143.6 while that of Bharti Airtel and VIL in the same quarter was Rs 153 and Rs 109, respectively.

  • This is how much the Reliance-Google made ‘JioPhone Next’ may cost – morningtidings

This is how much the Reliance-Google made ‘JioPhone Next’ may cost – morningtidings

Reliance is set to launch a low cost smartphone running Google’s Android Go operating system on September 10. This smartphone is said to be super affordable and is primarily meant for those who cannot afford to buy regular Android handsets. India has at least 300 million 2G feature phone users and the JioPhone Next is expected to give these users an opportunity to use a smartphone and experience high-speed 4G internet connectivity.
Reliance Jio hasn’t revealed much about the device. Also, there is no official information about the price of the phone. However, media reports claim that the JioPhone Next may cost Rs 3,500 in India. It will be a sub-$50 smartphone and it is estimated to be Rs 3,499. Having said that, Reliance Jio may also look at further incentivising the device through carrier deals and financing options.
The JioPhone Next will be powered by Google’s Android Go operating system based on Android 11. With Android Go, users will get basic Android phone experience. While they will get access to Google’s services, software updates, Google Assistant and ability to download apps from Google Play store, note that access to all apps will not be there. Due to hardware limitations, users may not be able to download popular games, streaming apps, etc. Having said that users will get access to all Go versions of popular Google apps. Low-end chipset, limited RAM and storage will prevent the JioPhone Next to be a full-fledged regular Android phone.
The JioPhone Next will most likely be powered by a low-end chipset from Qualcomm. As per the tweets by Rahman, the device may be powered by the Qualcomm QM215 platform. It features a 64-bit CPU and dual ISP support. The JioPhone Next will come with a single lens camera at the back with 13MP sensor along with an 8MP camera on the front for selfies. The default camera app will be Google Camera Go.

  • JioPhone Next: The numbers that matter for Reliance and Google – morningtidings

JioPhone Next: The numbers that matter for Reliance and Google – morningtidings

Reliance Jio announced its new feature phone JioPhoneNext recently. The 4G feature phone announced at the parent company Reliance’s 47th annual general meeting aims to give users an opportunity to participate in India’s mobile digital economy.
Seems the company that launched its first feature phone, JioPhone, in 2017 realised that the KaiOS-powered device is not enough to bridge the digital divide in the country. Jio has now partnered with Google to offer a smartphone running on stripped-down version of Android that gives users access to Google Play Store.
The JioPhone Next is likely to come with basic hardware features that may not run as efficiently on the current-generation Android operating system. This is why Google has made a stripped down and optimised Android version for the JioPhone Next.
Having said that, the JioPhone Next taps the 320 million users who are on 2G-enabled feature phones and 540 million who are still to buy their first own mobile devices.
For a population with 1.39 billion people that has a mobile phone penetration of 61% only, the JioPhone Next is a huge market for both Google and Jio.
Of course, the JioPhone Next needs to be subsidised, so that people will be able to afford it. But more than the costs, Google and Jio are eyeing the returns — over 500 million new users.
“Out of the 850 million unique mobile phone users, nearly 530 million are smartphone users, whereas roughly 320 million are feature phone users. With the JioPhone Next, Reliance Jio is staring at a potential 520 million users. These include around 150 million unconnected, 50 million second hand/older used smartphone users due for upgrade and the 320 million feature phone users (including 4G Jio Phone smart feature phone users),” as per a recent report by Counterpoint Research.
Jio already has a subscriber base of 425 million and in order to grow this number, it needs to push 2G users towards 4G.
Launching a full-fledged Android phone under Rs 3,000 given the high prices of chips, battery, camera modules is a huge cost challenge irrespective of the scale involved. Also, running Android 10 or 11 on a smartphone needs some minimum hardware requirements. Jio’s partnership with Google is all about balancing expectations and costs.
Google has said that it will provide an optimised version of Android without revealing much details. In other words, it will be a light version of Android with only necessary Google services, basic required features and access to Google Play store. Also, Google needs to optimise the software so that it can work well on basic hardware. To make the deal sweeter, the search giant has promised to provide timely software and security updates. You may think that Google is over-committing, considering the JioPhone Next will be a highly subsidised phone, but looking at the possibility of getting over 500 million unique users who will be using Google services for first-time, it is definitely worth it for the US-based company.
