Assam Assembly Election | Congress releases latest list with 26 names

The Congress released a new list of 26 names for the second phase of the assembly elections in Assam late Wednesday. The party has announced 43 seats for the first two phases before last Saturday.

The party has named candidates for some key seats in the Barak Valley of South Assam which is the bone of contention between the Congress and its ally, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) led by Badruddin Ajmal.

Prominent names in the list include former minister Siddique Ahmed from Karimganj South, MLA Kamalakhya De Purshakarthi from Karimganj North and entrepreneur Pradyut Bhuyan from Nalbari.

Keen to exclude the BJP from its former stronghold, the Congress has forced the grand alliance of seven parties in the state to join the NDA.

While the BJP is seeking a second term on the basis of its governance record, the Congress has raised the issue of Identity Politics and Citizenship Amendment Act in the state.

The three-phase polling in the state will be held on March 27, April 1 and April 6 and the results will be announced on May 2.
