India’s Wearable Market Grows by 29.2% in Third Quarter, Smart Ring Category Shows Promise

New Delhi, November 15: India’s wearable market shipped a record 48.1 million units in the third quarter this year, a 29.2 per cent year-over-year (YoY) growth, a new report showed on Wednesday. Apart from the new smartwatch and earwear models, smart rings became prominent in the third quarter, according to the data from International Data Corporation (IDC).

The smart ring category is generating a lot of interest from consumers, particularly due to the interesting form factor and several launches in the past few months. “Smart rings add novelty to the wearable device space, with brands trying to position it as a fashion accessory and a non-intrusive health device. While currently there are very few models, we can expect more mainstream brands launching more affordable options next year,“ said Upasana Joshi, Research Manager, Client Devices, IDC India. Tech Layoffs Dampen Festivities; Google, Amazon, Snap and Others Announce Fresh Job Cuts.

Ultrahuman led the smart ring category with an impressive 75.5 per cent market share, followed by Pi Ring at 10.9 per cent, and boAt (Imagine Marketing) with an 8.2 per cent market share in the third quarter. Overall, the domestic wearable market shipped 105.9 million units in the first three quarters of 2023, which is more than 100.1 million units shipped in 2022.

The overall average selling price (ASPs) declined by 20.4 per cent from $27.2 to $21.7. “Brands have upped the game with high-end specifications at entry-level pricing. This combined with high-decibel marketing campaigns and promotions will drive Q4 shipments, resulting in strong double digit annual growth in 2023,” said Vikas Sharma, senior market analyst, Wearable Devices, IDC India.

boAt (Imagine Marketing) continued to dominate the overall wearable market with 29.7 per cent share, growing by 19.4 per cent. In TWS too, it maintained leadership with 37.9 per cent share, 33.3 per cent growth YoY. It stood third in the smartwatch category with 14.2 per cent market share.

Noise (Nexxbase) stood second in overall wearables with 10.8 per cent share and flat 0.6 per cent YoY shipment growth. It dropped to second in the smartwatch category with 20.7 per cent market share and maintained its fourth position in the TWS segment at 7.7 per cent share, growing by 20.4 per cent YoY, the report mentioned. Apple Reveals Finalists for ‘App Store Awards 2023’, Highlights Apps Chosen by Company’s Editorial Team.

Smartwatches remained the fastest growing category with 16.9 million units, growing by 41 per cent YoY as incumbent vendors shipped aggressively to stock for the upcoming festive season. Within wearables, the share of earwear dropped to 64.4 per cent from 67.3 per cent a year ago, but shipments still grew 23.6 per cent to 30.9 million units, according to the report.

  • ‘The Courier’ movie review: Throwback spy-thriller that delivers on its promise

‘The Courier’ movie review: Throwback spy-thriller that delivers on its promise

The cast is exceptional and held together by Benedict Cumberbatch’s virtuoso performance as Wynne

Though Ian Fleming created James Bond as a Cold War era spy, the movies created a suave, globe-trotting secret agent in Saville Row suits quaffing copious quantities of vodka martinis while dallying with lovely ladies in luxurious hotel rooms. There is also the other, understated kind of spy-thriller, which is no less thrilling. So, while Bond was defeating Goldfinger and dissing The Beatles (really), a middle-aged spy was bought out of retirement to find a mole in the British secret service (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy).

The Courier, based on true events, tells the story of Greville Wynne (Benedict Cumberbatch), a British businessman who is persuaded by the CIA and the British intelligence to act as a courier for a high-ranking GRU officer, Oleg Penkovsky (Merab Ninidze). Wynne is chosen because he travels often to eastern European countries on work. When Penkovsky agrees to spy for the west, Wynne seems to be the right person to be his contact as he is a civilian with no connection to the intelligence services. And being a businessman, it is easy to convince Russia that he is just another greedy capitalist. As MI6’s Dickie Franks (Angus Wright) says no one will suspect Wynne as he is out of shape and has a drinking problem.

    The Courier

    • Director: Dominic Cooke
    • Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Merab Ninidze, Rachel Brosnahan, Jessie Buckley, Angus Wright
    • Story line: A British businessman is persuaded to spy on the Russians during the Cuban missile crisis
    • Duration: 111 minutes

Though Wynne is initially reluctant, the more he involved he gets, the harder he finds it to walk away. And when CIA’s Emily Donovan (Rachel Brosnahan) and Franks tell Wynne his assignment is done, he is unwilling to leave Penkovsky without an exit plan. Unlike the libidinous Bond, both Wynne and Penkovsky are family men with Wynne’s wife Sheila (Jessie Buckley) suspecting him of having an affair while he is actually serving king and country.

Directed by Dominic Cooke, The Courier recreates a lived-in 1960s, from the clothes and cars to JFK’s speeches on the radio. The cast is exceptional and held together by Cumberbatch’s virtuoso performance as Wynne. With his little moustache, neatly-parted hair, trench coat and slouching gait, he looks every bit the middle-class businessman called upon to draw on some unknown reserves of bravery.

There is an appealing minimalism to the movie from its sets to its ambitions, which draws us into this tale of ordinary men doing extraordinary things to save the world. While Wynne does not defeat a gold-obsessed megalomaniac, it is his and Penkovsky’s efforts that stave off the Cuban Missile Crisis. There are thrills aplenty for spy thriller buffs, and for those who like relentless action, this is just the ticket if they are looking for a change of pace.

  • Assam Assembly Election | Rahul made holes in Modi’s ‘Make in India’ pitch

Assam Assembly Election | Rahul made holes in Modi’s ‘Make in India’ pitch

Congress leader said, PM destroyed small, medium businesses through demonetisation, GST

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday slammed the Narendra Modi government for “destroying” small and medium businesses and raising the unemployment rate across the country.

He also selected the evidence of the Prime Minister of ‘Make in India’, taking into account the performance and flawed implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) for the economic slowdown in the country.

“PM Modi said about Make in India”. Has it happened? The PM uses a phone with ‘Made in China’ written on the back. The reason for this is that they have sabotaged the country’s economic base through sabotage and wrong GST, ”Mr. Gandhi told a crowd at Gohpur in Assam at a Congress rally.

He said that ‘Make in India’ applies only to unemployment, increasing in every state.

Mr. Gandhi promised that if voted to power in Assam, the Congress would provide five lakh jobs by filling vacant posts in various government departments. He also committed that the Congress would help small and medium businesses and industries.

“The BJP makes long promises wherever it goes. I am not here to lie to you. I made some commitments before the elections in Chhattisgarh, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh. I said that the debt of the farmers will be forgiven. The debts were waived in six hours after the Congress won the elections in Chhattisgarh.

“If the Chief Minister of the Congress Party is appointed in Assam, I promise to the tea workers. 365 will get a daily salary. You will also get electricity for up to 200 units for free and women will get a monthly income of ₹ 2,000.

He also emphasized his party’s commitment to repeal the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in Assam.

He said, ‘They tried to implement the CAA, but the Congress stood against it in the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha. Let me tell you that CAA will not come to Assam. We will not allow them to move even an inch with the CAA, ”Mr. Gandhi said.

He promised that the Congress would protect the culture, language, tradition and history of Assam – “the most complex and unique state in the country” – and it was not allowed to run by Nagpur, a coalition of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

  • Assam Assembly Election | Rahul made holes in Modi’s ‘Make in India’ pitch

Assam Assembly Election | Rahul Gandhi promises to end hatred, bring peace

Attacking the ruling BJP in Assam, he said that the entire state was being handed over to “outsiders”.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday accused the BJP of attacking Assam’s culture, language, history and brotherhood, and promised to end hatred and bring peace if his party is in power in the state.

Addressing an election rally at Mariani in Jorhat district, Mr. Gandhi alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi works for the two-three richest industrialists in the country and not for the common people.

Gandhi said at the rally, “BJP is attacking Assam’s culture, language, history and brotherhood … We will protect you and your culture and identity, eliminate hatred and bring peace. It is your state and it Cannot run from Nagpur. “

Attacking the ruling BJP in Assam, he said that the entire state was being handed over to “outsiders”.

“The government has given ₹ 2,000 crore of your money to modernize the Guwahati airport. Now it has been taken away from you and given to Adani. In this way everything in the country is given to him (Modi’s) two-three. The richest man is giving. Friends, “Mr. Gandhi said.

He alleged that the BJP makes different promises at different places but does not fulfill them.

“I never lie. What I said before the elections in Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Punjab. I said that the debts of the farmers would be forgiven. Within six hours of forming the government in Chhattisgarh, it was done.” Like, the promise is fulfilled in every other state, ”he said.

He was campaigning in Mariani, going into the first phase of elections on March 27, including three-time heavyweight Congress MLA Roopjyoti Kurmi, who will have a direct contest with BJP candidate Ramani Jayanti.

Mr. Gandhi said that if the Congress forms the government in the state, a law will be introduced to repeal the CAA, five lakh government jobs will be given, 200 units of electricity will be free for all, housewives will get the 2,000 every month and The minimum wage of tea garden workers will be increased to garden 365.

He said, “You are watching the condition of the country. The BJP demonetised it saying that it is a fight against black money. However, it snatched money from you and gave it to two or three big industrialists.”

“Then came the GST, a promise of simple taxes and benefits for all. Modi brought it in with five different taxes and the highest rate is 28% … These two decisions have resulted in thousands of industries being shut down. He says something , But does something else, ”the former Congress president said.

Raising the issue of price rise, he said that the BJP government is working “We do, we do (Hum Do, Hamare Do) ”While farmers, small traders, workers and others are suffering due to high inflation.

“He (Modi) waived the taxes and debts of two-three industrialists, but he did nothing for you. He also attacked the farmers by bringing all three agricultural laws. That’s why we have brought five guarantees for you,” Mr. . . Gandhi said, referring to the party’s election promises.

He said that the Congress government, if voted to power, would encourage small and medium-sized businesses to generate employment in the private sector as well.

  • ‘The Priest’ movie review: Mammootty’s horror-thriller falls short after initial promise

‘The Priest’ movie review: Mammootty’s horror-thriller falls short after initial promise

Debutant director Jofin. T. Chacko balances Mammootty’s star power with the script impressively, but repetitive sequences dull an interesting premise

Subtlety in presentation is something that makers of new-age thrillers (and even horror flicks) focus on — as much as the plot twists and storyline. But when a mainstream star comes into the picture, especially in a star-oriented industry like in Kerala, often subtlety becomes a casualty. In The Priest, debutant Jofin. T. Chacko has the unenviable task of striking such a balance, but gets away almost unscathed in letting the content take precedence over the star… although the same cannot be said if the movie as a whole is considered.

Father Carmen Benedict (Mammooty), who spends more time on criminal investigation than on priestly duties, is investigating a series of suicides in the Alatt family, which he suspects to be murders. During the investigation, he comes across young Ameya Gabriel (Baby Monica), who seems to have a few mysteries of her own.

The Priest gets many things right in the first half, which remains focused on a series of deaths in the family. In fact, the first half could even work as a stand-alone movie, for the latter half takes off from there on a different tangent, which has nothing much to do with the initial investigation. The one element of surprise the makers kept in store for the interval might not be a surprise at all, for those who have paid enough attention all along.

    The Priest

    • Director: Jofin. T. Chacko
    • Starring: Mammootty, Manju Warrier, Nikhila Vimal, Baby Monica
    • Storyline: A priest tries to solve a set of mysterious suicides, which leads to unexpected discoveries

Even in the second half, when the horror elements kick in, the script is on track initially, when it manages to keeps us guessing and alternately evokes some chills. But before long, things end up all over the place, with the audience getting more than a clue on what the mystery is all about. From this point on, one has to plod on through tedious, repetitive sequences for the script to tie up the whole thing officially. The weakest link is perhaps the reason for some of the mysterious happenings, which could make some go, “That’s all?”

A few sequences at ‘explaining’ what actually had happened seems to have been included probably because the makers underestimated the intelligence of the audience. The tone and mood of the whole film is a bit loud and uneven at various points, but it is still a notch better than some of the horror flicks in Malayalam.

Mammootty the star, takes a back-seat most of the times, letting the investigator priest take over, except for a few fan-pleasing scenes, which is a welcome shift from many of his recent movies. Manju Warrier’s role is almost a short cameo, while Baby Monica steals the show as Ameya. However, some of the rather violent sequences involving the child could be hard viewing for other kids and even adults.

Coming from a debutant, The Priest works in parts, but falls short after some initial promise.

The Priest is currently running in theatres

  • OPEC + should fulfill the promise of price stability: Dharmendra Pradhan

OPEC + should fulfill the promise of price stability: Dharmendra Pradhan

Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that India is the world’s third largest oil importer and consumer, which wants to boost production to meet its promise of stable crude markets to OPEC + producers.

Mr Pradhan said at the CERAWeek conference by IHS Markets that India, where fuel demand is recovering from pre-pandemic levels, would like to rely on fair and responsible oil prices.

Production cuts by the OPEC + group, with the cooperation of partners including the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and Russia have recovered oil prices from last year’s price crash.

Crude benchmark rose more than 2% on 3 March, as OPEC + expected to take a decision against raising output to reduce prices found on 4 March. The group previously expected ease of production cuts.

Rising oil prices are posing fiscal challenges for the country, where heavy retail fuel prices have recently touched record highs, threatening a demand-driven recovery.

Mr. Pradhan said that India had supported the OPEC + decision to cut crude oil production last year when oil demand declined due to the outbreak of coroners.

“[At] At that time producers assured us, especially OPEC, reassuring the global market that by early 2021 demand would return and production would be as usual. But I regret to say that by this time production has yet to return to normal.

He added that higher oil prices may correspond to “some of our friends”, but emerging countries like India need fair prices.

India imports around 84% of its oil needs, with more than 60% coming from Middle Eastern countries. Mr. Pradhan said that India would scout for alternative routes and energy sources, including green hydrogen, especially if prices kept rising.

“Today we expect producing countries, especially OPEC and its friends, that they should do business as usual [over] He promised about that responsible fair price. “
