Twitter Blue Tick: Micro Blogging Website Starts Account Verification Process for ‘Blue Verified Badge’

New Delhi, May 20: Twitter will start rolling out its verification application process from Thursday after which approved user accounts can sport the ‘blue verified badge’. Twitter had paused its public verification programme a few years ago. However, last year, Twitter said it would re-launch the account verification process in 2021.

On Thursday, Twitter highlighted that it has also started automatically removing the verified badge from those accounts that no longer meet the updated criteria for verification.

“We’re excited to share that starting today, we’ll begin rolling out our new verification application process and reviewing public applications for verification on Twitter. Today’s application rollout marks the next milestone in our plans to give more transparency, credibility, and clarity to verification on Twitter,” Twitter said in a blog. Verified accounts that repeatedly violate the Twitter Rules are subject to have the blue badge removed, it added. Twitter highlighted that it has also started enforcing that policy by automatically removing the verified badge from accounts that no longer meet the updated criteria for verification, such as those that are inactive or incomplete.

The coveted ‘blue badge’ is one of the ways Twitter helps people distinguish the authenticity of accounts that are of high public interest, and gives Twitter users more context about who they’re having conversations with.

“With today’s application launch, we’re also introducing new guidelines for verified accounts on Twitter. These verification guidelines are intended to encourage healthy conversations for the betterment of the Twitter community overall,” the US-based company said.

To qualify for verification, users must belong to one of the six categories – Government; Companies/brands/organisations; news organisations and journalists; entertainment; sports and gaming; and activists/organisers/other influential individuals.

Twitter pointed out that it is planning to introduce more categories later this year, such as those for scientists, academics, and religious leaders. The microblogging platform said users must also provide a profile name, a profile image, and either a confirmed email address or phone number. The account must also be active within the last six months and have a record of adherence to the Twitter Rules.

If the application is approved, users will see the blue badge automatically on their profile. India is one of the biggest markets for digital platforms like Google, Facebook, and Twitter. Earlier this year, the government had introduced guidelines to curb the misuse of social media platforms.

IISc builds software to automate the legal process for Prorigo IP

Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, (IISc) and Prorigo Software Pvt. Ltd. has jointly developed a software that helps automate the legal and bureaucratic part of the patent process for intellectual property developed by Indian academics in large and small institutions.

The software is not only better for academics to use, but comes at a fraction of the cost of software developed outside India – which was the only option available until now.

Srinivasan Raghavan, Chairman, Nano Science and Engineering, IISc said, “A solution that can be adapted to Indian educational needs, which exists at an affordable price, which is not affordable.” In 2016, work was started on the software named ProrIISe, when he headed the Intellectual Property and Technical Licensing Section (IPTeL) of the institute. Since then, the software has been tested at IISc for more than three years, to the satisfaction of its faculty.

IISc director Govindan Rangarajan said the faculty’s response was ‘highly positive,’ and ‘he praised everything being logged in one place.’ Kaustubh Karandikar, a director of Prorigo Software, said the solution would cost a few lakh rupees.

Version 2.0 of the software, slated for release in 2021, will also automate the financial part. The next version, which is expected to be released in 2022, will bring an artificial intelligence approach to the processes required to evaluate patents.

Mr. Karandikar further stated that two options are available for small firms and institutions to use: one, where applications are deployed and managed in Prorigo’s cloud environment. According to a report by audit firm KPMG, COVID-19 is being hit by business leaders speeding up adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI). They see this acceleration moving “very fast”, but are still convinced that AI can solve many challenges.

In my study titled Thriving in an AI worldThe consulting firm says that nearly half of business leaders in the manufacturing, retail and technology sectors believe AI is moving faster than this. KPMG surveyed 950 business leaders across seven industries, including technology, financial services, manufacturing and healthcare.

And within the industry group, leaders in healthcare and life sciences said AI helped them monitor COVID-19 epidemics, develop and deliver vaccines. The sentiment was echoed with executives at Financial Services, who noted that AI’s ability to detect fraud this year proved to be very effective.

Puducherry Assembly Election | The nomination process for voting begins

The window for filing nominations for the upcoming election for Puducherry Assembly was opened on Friday with formal notification of voting on 6 April. Chief Secretary Ashwini Kumar issued a gazette notification in this regard.

However, no candidate filed his nomination on the first day. The last date for filing nominations is March 19, scrutiny of nominations will take place on March 20 and the deadline for withdrawal of candidature will end on March 22.

Blinken presents plans to step up Afghan peace process: report
