    San Francisco, November 21: Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has testified in Google vs Epic antitrust case, saying it is a ‘crooked’ bully that has monopolistic control over mobile game developers on Google Play Store. Sweeney told the court here late on Monday that Google called him into its Mountain View, California, headquarters to try to persuade Epic to release the Fortnite game in the Play Store.

    Sweeney said Google tried to entice him with a wide range of financial incentives, which he rejected, reports CBS News. “It seemed like a crooked arrangement.     Sweeney’s testimony came less than a week after Google CEO Sundar Pichai defended its Play Store for Android apps. It’s one of two antitrust cases against Google. After rejecting Google’s offers, Epic tried to distribute the Fortnite game for Android through its own website. However, Sweeney testified that effort quickly turned into “a depressing process” because far fewer game players downloaded Fortnite for Android phones than anticipated.

    “We realised Google was a difficult adversary and had the ability to obstruct us,” Sweeney was quoted as saying. Epic eventually released Fortnite in the Play Store in 2020.     “It’s an issue I see as existential to all games, including Epic,” Sweeney said. Sweeney also said he would have taken Sony to court over PlayStation cross-play. “We were willing to fight them in court if necessary,” he said.

    San Francisco, November 9: Google offered a $147 million deal to game developer Epic Games to launch its popular game Fortnite on Google Play store, the tech giant has told the court. Purnima Kochikar, Vice President, Play Partnerships at Google, said in her testimony that the deal was approved and presented to Epic but not accepted, reports The Verge.

    The deal would have seen the money dispensed over a three-year period of “incremental funding” (ending in 2021) to Epic.In a document justifying the deal, Google wrote that “Fortnite’s absence could result in $130 million (up to $250 million) direct revenue loss with Play” and that there could be a “downstream impact of $550 million (up to $3.6 billion) potential revenue loss if broad contagion to other developers”. Microsoft-Owned GitHub Now Has 13.2 Million Developers in India, With 3.5 Million Joining Platform This Year Alone.

    “We just wanted developers to choose Play,” Kochikar said in the testimony. The Epic vs Google trial began on Monday. Google defended its 30 per cent cut on transactions for apps via its Play store. According to The Verge, Google attorney Glenn Pomerantz described the 30 per cent share as “a market fee, not a monopoly fee.”

    San Francisco, December 1 : Nearly 300 loan apps are circulating on Google Play and the Apple App Store that exhibit predatory behaviour, such as exfiltrating excessive user data from mobile devices and harassing borrowers for repayment, a new report has revealed.

    According to cloud security company Lookout, these loan apps exploit victims’ desire for quick cash to trap borrowers into predatory loan contracts and require them to grant access to sensitive information such as contacts and SMS messages. Chinese Loan Apps Case: MHA Asks States, UTs To Take Urgent Action Against Predatory Chinese Lending Apps.

    Some victims have reported that their loans were accompanied by hidden fees, high-interest rates, and repayment terms that were not as favourable as advertised. Lookout also found evidence that data exfiltrated from devices were sometimes used to pressure borrowers for repayment, which is a common threat tactic to disclose a borrower’s debt to their networks.

    Researchers at Lookout discovered 251 Android apps that had been downloaded over 15 million times.     Meanwhile, in August, Google purged more than 2,000 controversial personal loan apps from its Play Store in India in the January-June period after consulting with law enforcement agencies.

    Back in May, Google announced that it would require personal loan apps in India to complete the additional proof of eligibility requirements. Last month, Google ordered loan apps in Kenya to present proof of their licences to operate in the country, or they risk being removed from the Google Play store.

    Fake Kerala Lottery Tickets Being Sold on Dubious Apps on Google Play Store

    Bengaluru, November 15: Dubious apps on Google Play Store have impersonated the Directorate of Kerala State’s lotteries — Kerala Lottery Online and India Kerala Lottery — and are duping people, cybersecurity researchers warned on Tuesday.

    Both the applications hosted on Google Play Store have over one million downloads and were found impersonating the Online Kerala lottery which operates in offline mode.     “Cashing on the popularity of Kerala lottery, threat actors have created multiple apps and websites to sell tickets and conduct lotteries which is banned by Kerala state government,” according to a CloudSEK researcher.

    To prove legitimacy, threat actors impersonated government entities and create fake advertisements from accounts having more than 200,000 followers on major social media platforms.

    “Logos of the Directorate of Kerala State Lotteries, National Informatics Centre, and Kerala state were used by the makers of the dubious apps. According to the Kerala Lottery Department, the state sells only paper lottery tickets and prohibits online sales,” said security researchers. They found that both Kerala Lottery Online and India Kerala Lottery apps display the same privacy policy but operate under different names.

    “Upon analysis of these two applications, the following email addresses were listed as developer’s contact: [email protected] and [email protected]. This indicates that the government entity is not operating the apps,” CloudSEK noted. The applications ask for several permissions and notable among them was the request to install packages (required to install other applications on your device).

    There were multiple Telegram groups, YouTube videos, Facebook and Twitter posts promoting the scam applications. “Several websites have also been created to promote the apps and make the apps look legitimate,” the researcher added.

    New Delhi, November 15: Google announced on Tuesday that it is introducing UPI Autopay as a payment option for subscription-based purchases on Google Play in India.

    Introduced under UPI 2.0 by NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India), UPI Autopay helps customers make recurring payments using any UPI application that supports the feature.

    “With the introduction of UPI Autopay on the platform, we aim to extend the convenience of UPI to subscription-based purchases, helping many more people access helpful and delightful services – while enabling local developers to grow their subscription-based businesses on Google Play,” Saurabh Agarwal, Head of Google Play Retail & Payments Activation – India, Vietnam, Australia and New Zealand said in a statement. Moreover, UPI Autopay makes setting up subscriptions easy.

    Users need to simply tap on the payment method in the cart, select “Pay with UPI,” and then approve the purchase in their supported UPI app after selecting a subscription plan to purchase.     San Francisco, November 14 : Google has started testing advertising applications in the search field over history in the Play Store.     The search history will only appear after the user types a letter. After that, the previous searches will be displayed first and then the autocomplete recommendations.     Right now, when the user taps the search bar it displays the four most recent searches and also brings up the keyboard.

    Earlier, the tech giant had announced to add new features to the Play Store for better listing of apps next year.

    The company showcased the changes at its annual developer conference I/O earlier this year. The tech giant was also redesigning the Play Store for large screens using the screenshots, videos and descriptions directly in Apps and Games Home.

    The target of the content-forward approach was to better represent the apps in the store and help users to make install decisions, Google said.
