Meet Pradeep Rudra and Mayank Parakh of the on-screen NIA team in Nagarjuna Akkineni starrer ‘Wild Dog’

The actors who were part of the on-screen NIA team in the Nagarjuna Akkineni starrer ‘Wild Dog’, share their journeys from fitness and stand-up comedy to cinema

For emerging actors cast in supporting parts, the challenge is to make an impression even when the focus is more on the protagonist. In writer and director Ahishor Solomon’s Telugu film Wild Dog, which stars Nagarjuna Akkineni as an NIA (National Investigation Agency) officer leading a mission to nab a terrorist responsible for a series of blasts across India, the actors who were cast as his team members — Ali Reza, Prakash Sudarshan, Pradeep Rudra and Mayank Parakh — also got noticed.

Both Mayank and Pradeep are known in Hyderabad social circles, Pradeep for establishing the F45 fitness centres in the city and Mayank for his stand-up comic shows.

    Kurnool to cinema, via Australia

    Nagarjuna and Pradeep Rudra

Pradeep’s is a journey from management to fitness and then cinema. He was born into an agricultural family in a village near Kurnool, and his mother insisted that he study in an English medium school. “The nearest such school was 20 kilometres away; I was put in a boarding school,” he recalls. Growing up in a boarding school taught him to take decisions independently, and this came in handy later.

The interest in cinema had always been there. He had auditioned for a part in director Shankar’s Tamil film Boys in the early 2000s, after completing engineering in Chennai. “I was among the 10 shortlisted boys; I was asked to get a portfolio photoshoot done. It would have cost me ₹7000. I had put aside ₹5000 to process my visa to Australia and I had to take a call.”

Considering the struggles his family had been through, he felt responsible and chose to go to Australia and pursue an MBA. Neverthless, he retained the knack of charting his course without following the herd. While his peers applied for corporate jobs, he became a consultant and took up independent projects: “I earned well and my finances were good. But I yearned for something other than a desk job.”

A freak car accident, from which he escaped unscathed, made him re-evaluate his choices. Unsure of what he wanted to do; he took some time before he zeroed in on entrepreneurship in fitness.

“I did a one-year fitness and nutrition course at the Australian Institute of Fitness, where I was the only Indian that year. I then returned to India,” he says. As part of the founding team of F45, he saw the brand grow to open 30 centres in India within two years. At the fitness centre in Hyderabad, he was privy to several film personalities walking in to train.

    A scene from Wild Dog

    A scene from Wild Dog

One of them asked if he is open to lending his voice for a film. As luck would have it, the director felt he would be apt for the antagonist role and asked him to act. Pradeep was signed for Ksheera Sagara Madhanam, which is yet to be released.

Many auditions later, more opportunities followed — a supporting part in the web series Gods of Dharmapuri, Wild Dog and a handful of films that are scheduled to release in the next few months.

Talking about the Wild Dog experience, Pradeep says he had to unlearn what he had learnt as a fitness trainer and take a new approach for the combat moves that needed to be done with stealth. He is happy with the positive response to the film and his performance, and says he is a work in progress. “I took up acting classes and it’s been an ongoing process,” he says.

Next, Pradeep will be seen alongside Adivi Sesh in Major, Nani starrer Shyam Singha Roy and Srinivas Avasarala starrer 101 Jillala Andagadu, apart from an untitled film headlined by Kalyan Dhev.

    Stand-up comedy to cinema

    Mayank Parakh

Mayank Parakh can look poker-faced while on a mission, like he did in Wild Dog, and can also make a gathering laugh aloud when he’s on stage as a stand-up comic.

He calls himself an accidental actor. Acting, both in cinema and theatre productions, happened after he watched Paresh Rawal’s play Kishan Vs Kanhaiya and was mesmerised by the stage performance.

Earlier, Mayank worked as a civil engineer in Hyderabad from 2013 for the L&T Hyderabad Metro Rail project. The Chattisgarh native discovered theatre while in Hyderabad, signing up for acting workshops with Samahaara and Sutradhar theatre groups and performing with them.

“Once the acting bug got the better of me, I went to Mumbai to explore my opportunities in Hindi cinema,” he reminisces. He starred in the web series Lakhon Mein Ek. When he did stand-up shows thereafter, he was introduced as Bala from Laakhon Mein Ek and there was usually a packed crowd to listen to him.

Intermittently, smaller roles in Telugu films like Goodachari also happened. “I was getting offers from Hindi and Telugu cinema but I wasn’t keen on doing insignificant parts. It was a risk to turn down offers as a newcomer, but I did it,” he says.

Wild Dog stayed focussed on the anti-terror mission and there was less scope for stories of the supporting actors, Mayank explains: “But each of our characters had a backstory. My character had been on previous missions with Vijay Varma (Nagarjuna) and thus, we see him understanding his boss’s every move and being second in-charge on the field. Within the given framework, we tried to give some ingenuity to my character. There’s also the aspect of a mysterious past to my character — he has seen the death of his close ones and hence, doesn’t hesitate to embark on a do-or-die mission,” he says.

Mayank is now working on a web series produced by Arka Media and a new Telugu film starring Vishwak Sen. He also hopes to resume stand-up acts once the second wave of COVID-19 declines.

  • Nagarjuna Akkineni opens up on how playing an NIA officer in ‘Wild Dog’ proved to be an eye-opener

Nagarjuna Akkineni opens up on how playing an NIA officer in ‘Wild Dog’ proved to be an eye-opener

Actor Nagarjuna Akkineni opens up on filming in the mountains post lockdown, and how training to play an NIA officer in ‘Wild Dog’ proved to be an eye-opener

May 2021 will mark 35 years since Nagarjuna Akkineni debuted as a hero in the Telugu film Vikram (1986). Mention this to the actor and he laughs aloud, “I didn’t realise this until someone mentioned it to me recently; it doesn’t feel like 35 years at all.” At 61, with fitness levels that can challenge his younger colleagues, Nagarjuna is among the busiest actors in Telugu cinema. His new film Wild Dog, inspired by an undercover operation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) following the serial blasts that shook Hyderabad in 2007, will release in theatres on April 2. He recently signed a Telugu film to be directed by Praveen Sattaru, is a part of director Ayan Mukherji’s Hindi film Brahmastra co-starring Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, and is also in talks for a web series.

    Lockdown diaries

    • Looking back at 2020, Nagajuna says there were lessons to be learnt and room for introspection during lockdown: “In 35 years, I never had so much free time. It was good to bond with my family; everyone is busy that I hardly get to see them in normal circumstances. While being homebound, I also realised how much I love my work. I think the tiny virus gave the world a checkmate, telling us that we are all dispensable. It was as though the virus told me, ‘I can stop the world, you are no big deal’.”

Written and directed by Ahishor Solomon, Wild Dog was in the making long before the team announced the film with its first poster in December 2020. It stars Nagarjuna as NIA officer Vijay Varma and Saiyami Kher as a RAW (Research & Analysis Wing) agent.

“We completed filming the investigation portions in Hyderabad’s Old City, Mumbai and Pune prior to lockdown. In November, we filmed in Manali and Nepal,” says the actor.

    After the blasts

Nagarjuna vividly recalls the shock when the blasts at Lumbini Park, Gokul Chaat and near Konark Theatre brought Hyderabad to its knees: “I used to frequent Gokul Chaat in the early 2000s, for late-night paani puri. My car would be parked nearby and I would walk in front of the chaat centre. Two days after the blasts, I visited the place and was devastated by what I saw.”

A story inspired by the aftermath of these incidents, says the actor, prompted him to consider the script. Ahishor Solomon who directed the Hindi thriller John Day (2013), first met Nagarjuna to narrate the story of Oopiri (Thozha in Tamil, co-starring Karthi): “He was a writer associated with [director] Vamshi Paidipally and I liked how he narrated Oopiri. When he came to me with a well-researched story for Wild Dog, I was confident that he would direct it well.”

Wild Dog is in a similar genre to the Hindi film Uri: The Surgical Strike (2019), which Nagarjuna says is among his favourite films in recent years: “It’s hard to tell what is fiction and what is real; I liked how they wove in the family drama.”

How much of Wild Dog is fictional? “It’s hard to say, we don’t even know of the NIA officers. One of my dialogues in the film is about how these officers are unsung heroes. If they fail on duty, they might languish in a foreign prison or be executed. If they return successfully, their identities are still kept a secret so they can go on their next mission. Solomon has done his research and I liked the script.”

    Combat postures

Nagarjuna was trained by action choreographer David Ismalone, who has worked on international projects such as Fast and Furious 7 and Ong-Bak: Muan Thai Warrior, and Major Ajay who was part of the surgical strike operations. The training included combat postures, communicating with signs while on an operation, and how to hold the gun. Though he has acted as a cop in several films, Nagarjuna says Wild Dog was an eye-opener: “I realised I had been holding the gun wrong all along,” he says with a laugh, “These weapons are sophisticated and the slightest pressure is enough to trigger them. David told me that the gun should look like an extension of my arm.”

    Nagarjuna Akkineni in ‘Wild Dog’

    Nagarjuna Akkineni in ‘Wild Dog’

Post lockdown, filming in Nepal and the Rohtang Pass in Manali in winter, was a liberating as well as eerie experience, he recalls: “Liberating because there were no tourists and we could be in a bubble during the pandemic; eerie because it felt like we were in ghost towns, similar to what we see in Hollywood disaster films. We got a hotel to open up since we needed 50 rooms, and they were happy to accommodate us.”

Nagarjuna adds that it was unnerving to fly after the lockdown, factoring in COVID-19 protocols: “Now I got used to it; I fly every other day.”

What keeps him going after 35 years? “I cannot sit at home; I love to work.”

    Going digital

Wild Dog was to release directly on Netflix, but the deal was re-negotiated once theatres reopened and Telugu films began faring well at the box office: “It works in favour of Netflix as well, since a film that releases first in theatres generates a buzz.”

Nagarjuna believes OTT is the future of entertainment and says, “A project has to be an event/spectacle film or solidly engaging to draw people to the theatres.” He is in talks for a web series and likes the idea of a story being narrated over several episodes: “There’s scope to experiment. Digital platforms are also a fantastic opportunity for smaller films to find an audience. We are also beginning to see a reverse phenomenon — Money Heist is now being adapted into a feature film. This is an interesting phase,” he concludes.

Minister demands fund from officer, former Mumbai Police chief said

Singh said in a letter to the CM that ASI Wage asked the Home Minister to collect the money.

A few days after he stepped down from the post of Mumbai Police Commissioner, Param Bir Singh has alleged that Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh demanded h 100 crore every month from suspended police officer Sachin Waze, who is now the National Investigation Agency (NIA) ) Is in custody. Antilia bomb case

Mr. Singh made this allegation in a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday.

However, Mr. Deshmukh denied the allegations, saying that the letter was being written by an officer, who was interrogating Mr. Waze in the case. Mr. Singh’s letter came in the wake of reports indicating possible investigation against him and arrest by the NIA in the bombings case.

“The former police commissioner, Param Bir Singh, has made false accusations in the case of Mukesh Ambani and Mansukh Hiren to protect themselves and the investigation done so far is clearing the case and going towards Mr. Singh. Have been. Also, Mr. Deshmukh said. He said a defamation suit would be filed against Mr. Singh.

Mr. Deshmukh said in a statement that the alleged chat by Mr. Singh with another officer, ACP Sachin Patil, was on March 16, a day before he was dismissed from responsibility.

“If he was informed of this in February then why was he silent for this time?” The only reason for this is to divert attention from the death of Mansukh Deer as well as the ongoing investigation in the explosive case as it is becoming a problem for him.

He said that he (Singh) is trying to blackmail the government after getting into trouble with Sachin Vej in the explosive case. It is known that both Waze and Patil are close to Singh and the decision to reinstate Waze was taken in his capacity as no minister is involved in the same, ”he said.

Mr. Deshmukh said that he has demanded a fair inquiry from Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and will file a defamation suit against the officer.

The opposition BJP was demanding action against Mr. Deshmukh citing allegations by Mr. Singh. He said that Mr. Deshmukh should take moral responsibility.

Mr. Singh said in his letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, “Mr. Sachin Waze, who was heading the Crime Intelligence Unit of the Crime Branch of Mumbai Police, was called to his official residence by Mr. Anil Deshmukh, Hon’ble Home Minister, Maharashtra. Was. Dnyaneshwar instructed several times and repeatedly in the last few months to assist in the collection of funds for the Honorable Home Minister. In mid-February and thereafter, the Honorable Home Minister called Mr. Vazé to his official residence. At that time, one or two staff members of the Honorable Home Minister, including his personal secretary, Mr. Palande, were present. The Honorable Home Minister expressed to Mr. Waze that he had a target of depositing a 100 crore every month. “

According to Mr. Singh, the minister told Mr. Waze that there are about 1,750 bars, restaurants and other establishments in Mumbai and that if a sum of Rs 2-3 lakh was collected from each of them, then the monthly collection of -40- 50 crores. Received

In the letter, Mr. Singh has also stated that he was not in favor of the Mumbai Police investigating the suicide of Mohan Delkar, MP of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and the minister was forced to seek ‘political mileage’. He even claimed that many of Mr. Deshmukh’s actions were politically motivated and found Mr. Singh’s reservations and resistance undesirable.

The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanded Mr. Deshmukh’s resignation. “The allegations made in the letter are very serious and have never been done in the history of the state. Either the Home Minister should resign immediately, accepting moral responsibility or ask Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to resign. The BJP on Sunday launched a statewide agitation demanding the removal of Shri Deshmukh.

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray has also demanded Deshmukh’s resignation, citing Mr. Singh’s letter.

On the other hand, the Congress questioned the timing of the letter.

“The Home Minister said a month ago that he was under pressure. Central agencies are being used to pressure the administration.

Commenting on Mr. Singh’s claim that the Mumbai Police should not have investigated the suicide of MP Mohan Delkar, he said that if the Bihar Police can investigate the Sushant Singh Rajput case, then the Mumbai Police will investigate the case of Delkar’s death Why can’t she? “The entire episode is being planned to suppress the case of Dalekar death,” he alleged.

    NIA investigates Mansukh’s death

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Saturday handed over the investigation into the mysterious death of Thane resident Mansukh Hiran to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Maharashtra Police is currently investigating the case.

On 25 February, the Hiran SUV was last captured with gelatin sticks found near Antilia, the home of industrialist Mukesh Ambani. The NIA had earlier arrested police officer Sachin Veg for planting explosives laden Scorpio near Antilia.

An Assistant Inspector of Police (API) along with the Crime Branch of the Mumbai Police was arrested on 13 March under various charges of forgery, criminal intimidation, criminal conspiracy and Explosives Act.

A NIA spokesperson said that the MHA has reported the transfer of the investigation to the NIA and the case will be re-registered by the agency soon.

The explosive case was transferred from the Maharashtra Police to the NIA on 8 March.

The Mumbai Crime Branch officer, who is a former member of the Shiv Sena, has been charged with custodial murder in his previous tenure as a police officer. He was running suspended since 2004 and was reinstated by the Maharashtra government in June 2020.

There is a possibility of finding an explosive-laden car near Ambani’s mansion

Suspicious police officer Sachin Vej, arrested in Mumbai last week on charges of planting an explosive-laden car near industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s mansion, has been heard to “sing about many things”, but they are irrelevant in the case, a senior National Investigation Agency (NIA) official said.

The official said that more arrests are likely in the case.

The NIA arrested Mr. Waze, an Assistant Inspector of Police (API), on 13 March under various charges of forgery, criminal intimidation, criminal conspiracy and Explosives Act.

“He knows where to draw silence, it makes sense, it’s his right. He is not sharing relevant information related to the case, but otherwise does a lot of things. His actions are blunt but he is in thin air Were not working, we have to find out the whole conspiracy, ”the official said.

The official said that the NIA was not yet investigating the mysterious death of Mansukh Hiran, the last occupant of the Scorpio car found near Ambani’s mansion ‘Antilia’ on 25 February. The case is being investigated by the Maharashtra Police.

The explosive case was transferred from the Maharashtra Police to the NIA on 8 March.

In his previous tenure, a Mumbai Crime Branch officer, a former Shiv Sena member, has been charged with murder in custody. He has been suspended since 2004 and reinstated by the Maharashtra government in June 2020.

Twenty pieces of gelatin sticks were found in the car without nudes. A typed letter in broken English recovered from the car, stating that “Nita Bhabi and RK Bhaiya and Family” (Nita Ambani, Mukesh Ambani and family) said that it was “just a trailer”. The letter warned that there would be a bomb next time.

The letter is now in the possession of the NIA.

On 16 March, the NIA recovered a black colored Mercedes Benz car used by Mr Wedge. From the car, the Scorpio car’s number plate (which was left near the Ambani mansion), 5 more than 5 lakh cash, a note counting machine, and some clothes were recovered.

The car was often parked near the Mumbai Police Headquarters campus. “It is a very large area, anyone can park a car there,” the NIA official said when asked if any other senior Mumbai Police officer was aware of the vehicle.

Deer’s wife Vimala had told the Maharashtra police that her husband was in contact with Mr. Waze and it was the latter who was using the vehicle found near Ambani’s mansion on February 25.

The buck had told police that the Scorpio was stolen from the Airoli-Mulund bridge on 18 February.

Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh informed the state assembly on March 5 that the deer was not the owner of the car and the real owner handed it to the deer for some internal work.

According to Thane police, Heeran, who was involved in auto parts business, left his shop in an autorickshaw at around 8.30 pm on March 4 and since then his phone was switched off. His family then filed a missing complaint. His body was recovered from Nala area on 5 March.

Former Mumbai police chief: ‘Delhi lobby’ angry with Shiv Sena

Last month also questioned the NIA’s move to investigate an explosive-laden SUV found near the home of industrialist Mukesh Ambani.

Two days after Param Bir Singh was removed from the post of Mumbai Police Commissioner, the Shiv Sena on Friday defended him, saying that his transfer does not make him a criminal, and alleged that “a special lobby in Delhi” upset him. . The Television Rating Points (TRP) scandal surfaced during his tenure.

Why Mumbai Police holds press meeting on TRP scam, High Court asks

In Maharashtra, the ruling party questioned the National Investigation Agency (NIA) move in investigating explosive SUV parked near industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s house last month, saying the agency usually investigates cases related to terrorism, but this case there There was no terrorist angle involved.

The Maharashtra government on Wednesday transferred Mr. Singh, who handled the Ambani-SUV case, and replaced him with senior IPS officer Hemant Nagrale.

“A vehicle containing 20 gelatin sticks was found on Mumbai’s Carmichael Road, which has exploded in the state’s politics and administration in the last few days. Param Bir Singh was removed from the post of Mumbai Police Commissioner and senior officer Hemant Nagrale was appointed in his place. These are not routine transfers.

The suspicious death of Mansukh Deer, who was in possession of an explosive-laden SUV and vehicle near Ambani’s house, is a matter of concern. The opposition BJP has raised some questions on this, but as the state Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) was investigating the case of Deer’s death, the NIA took over the investigation (in a vehicle found near Ambani’s house).

Hopefully, this is not intended to discredit the state government.

“The NIA usually investigates cases related to terrorism. But there is no terrorist angle involved in this case and yet it was stepped into it. However, the results of the agency’s investigation into the terrorist attacks of Uri, Pathankot and Pulwama are still a mystery. The party led by Uddhav Thackeray said that 20 gelatin sticks found in Mumbai is a major challenge for the NIA.

It said that Param Bir Singh had taken over as Mumbai Police Chief during the difficult times of the coronovirus epidemic and boosted the morale of the police force.

“During his tenure, the TRP scam surfaced. A special lobby in Delhi was angry with him, ”it said.

The party said that Singh has now been transferred, but this does not make him a criminal.

It also accused the opposition of politicizing deer deaths and lowering the morale of the state police.

“At least given the current situation, no one should commit such a sin. If the opposition feels that it can gain power through such means, then it is wrong.

The opposition tried to get to know the political bosses in the Deer case, saying they should find out on their own. “There are no political bosses in such cases. This is not the culture of Maharashtra.
