  • Sheryl Sandberg Officially Steps Down As Meta COO After Spending 14 Years at Social Network Company

San Francisco, August 2: Meta chief operating officer (COO) Sheryl Sandberg has finally moved on from the position after spending 14 years as the second most-important executive at the social network.

Meta has appointed chief growth officer Javier Olivan as the new CEO who took charge from August 1, the company revealed in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the US. Sandberg will remain a Meta employee through September 30, after which she will continue as a board member.

“On August 1, 2022, the Board appointed Olivan as the Company’s Chief Operating Officer, effective as of such date. Sandberg will continue as an employee of the Company through September 30, 2022,” Meta said in the SEC filing late on Monday. WhatsApp Banned More Than 22 Lakh Bad Accounts in India in June 2022.

After such date, she “will continue to serve as a member of the Board and will receive compensation as a non-employee director pursuant to the company’s Director Compensation Policy,” Meta added.

In the latest quarterly earnings call late last month, Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg thanked her for everything that she has done for Meta, for its community, and for so many small businesses around the world.

“It’s really hard to overstate how big of an impact that Sheryl has had on so many different parts of what we do and on me personally,” said Zuckerberg. Sandberg replied, saying that it has been an enormous privilege to work for “you to help build this remarkable company”.

Zuckerberg and Sandberg are set to be deposed in a Cambridge Analytica lawsuit probably in September. According to a court document, Zuckerberg will have to answer questions for up to six hours, while Sandberg could face up to five hours of deposition, along with the new COO Olivan.

The deposition comes as part of a lawsuit filed in a California court on behalf of Facebook users impacted by Meta’s partnership with Cambridge Analytica. When Sandberg first announced her departure from the company in Mat this year, the Wall Street Journal reported the company was examining whether she had improperly used company resources in planning her upcoming wedding.

Meta lawyers are reportedly looking at Facebook staff’s involvement with Sandberg’s foundation ‘Lean In’, and their work to help her promote her most recent book, “Option B”.

  • Airtel 5G Network: Bharti Airtel Announces Successful Trial of India’s First 5G Private Network

Bengaluru, July 15: Amid the heated debate on allowing enterprises to build captive private 5G networks as India prepares for 5G spectrum auction, Bharti Airtel on Friday announced a successful trial of India’s first 5G private network at Bosch Automotive Electronics India (RBAI) facility here.

The on-premise 5G Captive Private Network was built over the trial 5G spectrum allocated by the Department of Telecom (DoT).

Airtel said it has implemented two industrial grade use cases for quality improvement and operational efficiency at Bosch’s manufacturing facility, utilising the trial spectrum. Bharti Airtel Buys Around 25% Stake in Bengaluru-Based Startup Lavelle Networks.

In both the cases, 5G technology such as mobile broadband and ultra reliable low latency communications drove automated operations ensuring faster scale up and reduced downtimes.

“We believe that Airtel has the world-class infrastructure, partnerships and expertise to deliver Captive Private Network Solution in any part of the country and to enterprises of any size,” said Ajay Chitkara, Director and CEO, Airtel Business.

The Department of Telecom has released a notice inviting applications (NIA) for the auction of spectrum in 600, 700, 800, 900, 1800, 2100, 2300, 2500, 3300 MHz and 26GHz bands. OPPO India Starts Its First 5G Innovation Lab in Hyderabad to Elevate Global 5G Experience & Develop Core Technologies.

The NIA provides explicit clarity on the subject of Captive Non-Public Networks (CNPN).

The private network set up on trial spectrum at the Bosch facility has the capability to manage thousands of connected devices along with delivering multi- GBPS throughput, said Airtel.

“The low latency and reliable connectivity provided by the Airtel Private 5G network at our facility which was experienced during the proof of concept is enabling us to enhance our efficiency and our productivity,” said Subhash P., Head of Technical Functions, Bosch Automotive Electronics India.

Last year, Airtel successfully demonstrated India’s first 5G experience over a live 4G network in Hyderabad. It has also demonstrated India’s first rural 5G trial as well as the first cloud gaming experience on 5G.

Meanwhile, the Broadband India Forum (BIF) on Friday said the choice of service provider for captive private 5G networks must lie with the enterprises.

“The enterprises would have to make do with whatever is offered by the telecom service providers (TSPs), whether satisfactory or not,” said BIF President T.V. Ramachandran.

The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), the industry’s apex body representing telcos, on Thursday urged the government not to allow Big Tech companies to enter the 5G spectrum auction this month via back door channels.

The COAI said in a statement that the 5G spectrum should not be provided on an administrative basis as it leads to no business case for the rollout of 5G networks in the country.

  • Cryptocurrency Lending Platform Celsius Network Files for Bankruptcy

New Delhi, July 14: Cryptocurrency lending company Celsius Network, that recently laid off 150 employees, has now filed for bankruptcy in the US amid extreme market conditions.

The platform said that it initiated voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings to provide it with the opportunity to stabilise its business and consummate a comprehensive restructuring transaction that maximises value for all stakeholders.

Celsius said late on Wednesday that it has $167 million in cash on hand, which will provide ample liquidity to support certain operations during the restructuring process. Sri Lanka Crisis: Central Bank Warns Public on Possible Risks in Cryptocurrency Trade.

The platform, which last month paused all withdrawals, was last valued at $3.25 billion. “Without a pause, the acceleration of withdrawals would have allowed certain customers — those who were first to act — to be paid in full while leaving others behind to wait for Celsius to harvest value from illiquid or longer-term asset deployment activities before they receive a recovery,” said the company. Alex Mashinsky, Co-Founder and CEO, Celsius, said that this is the right decision for its community and company.

“I am confident that when we look back at the history of Celsius, we will see this as a defining moment, where acting with resolve and confidence served the community and strengthened the future of the company,” he said.

Meanwhile, the founders of another bankrupt cryptocurrency hedge fund Three Arrows Capital (3AC) have vanished and the officials charged with liquidating the company were looking for their whereabouts. Cryptocurrency Prices in India.

The mega fund, founded by Credit Suisse traders Zhu Su and Kyle Davies, once managed an estimated $10 billion in assets. The Singapore-based 3AC filed for bankruptcy in the US earlier this month to protect its assets from creditors.

The bankruptcy came as popular crypto tokens such as Bitcoin and Ethereum nosedived by nearly 70 per cent from their record highs amid the economic meltdown. 3AC defaulted on a more than $650 million loan provided by crypto broker Voyager Digital, which has also filed for bankruptcy.

  • Instagram Head Adam Mosseri Condemns Russian Decision to Block Social Network

Washington, March 12: Instagram head Adam Mosseri has condemned the Russian decision to block the social network over Meta’s decision to allow publication of calls for violence against Russian soldiers and Russians in the context of the military operation in Ukraine.

Following the controversial statements of Meta, the Russian authorities decided to block Instagram starting from Monday. Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky Says ‘No Chemical Weapons Were Developed in the Country’.

“On Monday, Instagram will be blocked in Russia. This decision will cut 80 million in Russia off from one another, and from the rest of the world as ~80% of people in Russia follow an Instagram account outside their country. This is wrong,” Mosseri wrote on his Twitter page.

On February 24, Russia launched a special operation after the breakaway republics of Donetsk and Luhansk requested assistance to defend themselves from ongoing attacks by the Ukrainian troops.

  • Russia-Ukraine War: Meta Shuts Down Network Targeting Ukrainians With Fake News

New Delhi: Meta has taken down a network for targeting people in Ukraine who posed as news editors, aviation engineers and authors to spread misinformation around the Russian invasion across social media platforms. The people ran websites posing as independent news entities and created fake personas across social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Telegram and also Russian Odnoklassniki and VK apps, the company said late on Sunday. Russia-Ukraine War: After Facebook, Russia Blocks Twitter Amid Ukrainian Invasion.

“In the last 48 hours, we uncovered a relatively small network of about 40 accounts, Pages and Groups on Facebook and Instagram. They were operated from Russia and Ukraine and targeted people in Ukraine across multiple social media platforms and through their own websites,” said Nathaniel Gleicher, Head of Security Policy at Meta.

Meta took down this operation, blocked their domains from being shared on its platform, and shared information with other tech platforms, researchers and governments.

“When we disrupted this network on our platform, it had fewer than 4,000 Facebook accounts following one or more of its Pages and fewer than 500 accounts following one or more of its Instagram accounts,” Gleicher said.

This network used fake accounts and operated fictitious personas and brands across the internet — including on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Telegram, Odnoklassniki and VK — to appear more authentic in an apparent attempt to withstand scrutiny by platforms and researchers.

These fictitious personas used profile pictures likely generated using artificial intelligence techniques like generative adversarial networks (GAN). They claimed to be based in Kiev and posed as news editors, a former aviation engineer, and an author of a scientific publication on hydrography — the science of mapping water.

This operation ran a handful of websites masquerading as independent news outlets, publishing claims about the West betraying Ukraine and Ukraine being a failed state. Meta also announced a ‘Lock Your Profile’ tool that allows people to lock their Facebook profile in one step.

“When someone’s profile is locked, people who aren’t their friends can’t download, enlarge or share their profile photo, nor can they see posts or other photos on someone’s profile, regardless of when they posted it,” the company said.
