  • Devices With Biometric Data of US Troops and Terrorists Sold via Old US Military Equipment on eBay

Devices With Biometric Data of US Troops and Terrorists Sold via Old US Military Equipment on eBay

Washington, December 28 : Biometric data of US troops, known terrorists, and people who worked with American forces in Afghanistan and in the Middle East was sold via old US military equipment on eBay, the media reported. The devices were purchased by a group of hackers, who found fingerprints, iris scans, peoples’ pictures, and descriptions, all unencrypted and protected by a “well-documented” default password, reports The New York Times. Ransomware Attack Like AIIMS May Increase in 2023, Indian Firms Need To Be More Vigilant.

Some devices were left behind during the hasty withdrawal of NATO troops from Afghanistan. Germany-based CCC researchers found large amounts of biometric and other personal data when analysing such devices. “In the wrong hands, this data is life-threatening for people in Afghanistan and Iraq,” they wrote in a blog post.

“On used US military equipment, we discovered, among other things, an unprotected biometrics database containing names, fingerprints, iris scans, and photographs of more than 2,600 Afghans and Iraqis,” they added. Data Breach: CERT-In Warns Indian Users Against Phishing Attacks via LastPass.

The various devices shopped online contained names and biometric data of two US military personnel, GPS coordinates of past deployment locations, and a massive biometrics database with names, fingerprints, iris scans and photos of 2,632 people. The device containing this database had last been used somewhere between Kabul and Kandahar in mid-2012.

“The irresponsible handling of this high-risk technology is unbelievable,” said Matthias Marx, who led the CCC research group. “It is inconceivable to us that the manufacturer and former military users do not care that used devices with sensitive data are being hawked online,” Marx said.

  • Chinese Hackers Attack Govt Ministries, Military Industrial Plants Globally in Several Countries

New Delhi, August 9: China-based hackers attacked military industrial plants, research institutes, government agencies and ministries in several countries and were able to even hijack the IT infrastructure of some, taking control of systems used to manage security solutions, a new report has revealed.

Researchers at cyber-security firm Kaspersky detected a wave of targeted attacks on military industrial complex enterprises and public institutions in several Eastern European countries and Afghanistan.

“In the course of our research, we were able to identify over a dozen of attacked organisations,” the researchers said. The analysis suggests that “it is highly probable that a Chinese-speaking group is behind the attacks”. Crypto Service Nomad Suffers ‘Chaotic’ Attack, Loses $200 Million in Hack: Report.

The researchers tagged TA428, a Chinese-speaking APT group, behind the series of attacks using six backdoor malware. The attackers penetrated the enterprise network using carefully crafted phishing emails.

“In the course of our investigation, we discovered that, in some cases, the attackers create phishing emails using information that is not publicly available, such as the full names of employees responsible for handling sensitive information, as well as internal codenames of projects developed by attacked organisations,” the team noted.

Phishing emails contain Microsoft Word documents with embedded malicious code that exploits the CVE-2017-11882 vulnerability, which enables an attacker to execute arbitrary code without any additional user activity. Meta Shuts Pakistan Hackers Targeting Indian Officials via Honey Trapping, Malware.

In the new series of attacks, the attackers used six different backdoors at the same time — probably to set up redundant communication channels with infected systems in case one of the malicious programmes was detected and removed by a security solution.

“The backdoors used provide extensive functionality for controlling infected systems and collecting confidential data,” said Kaspersky. The attack targeted industrial plants, design bureaus and research institutes, government agencies, ministries and departments in several East European countries (Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine), as well as Afghanistan, it added.

  • Google Donates $15 Million in Relief to Ukraine, Blocks Russian News Channels RT, Sputnik on YouTube in Wake of Military Invasion

San Francisco, March 2: Tech giant Google has announced $15 million towards relief efforts in Ukraine, in the wake of recent military invasion into the country by Russia. The aid includes $5 million from employee matching campaigns and $5 million in direct grants. The remaining $5 million is raised from advertising credits. “The Russian invasion of Ukraine is both a tragedy and a humanitarian disaster in the making,” Kent Walker, President, Global Affairs at Google, wrote in a blogpost.

Walker added that Google teams are working round the clock to support people in Ukraine through “products, defending against cybersecurity threats, ensuring high-quality, reliable information”.

Further, the company has also launched an SOS alert on Search across Ukraine. “When people search for refugee and evacuation information, they will see an alert pointing them to United Nations resources for refugees and asylum seekers,” Walker said. Google Turns Off Maps’ Live Traffic Data in Ukraine to Protect Users Amid Russian Invasion.

The tech giant has temporarily disabled some live Google Maps features in Ukraine, including the traffic layer and information about how busy places are, to help protect the safety of local communities and their citizens.

It has also added information on refugee and migrant centres in neighbouring countries. The company said its security team is alert on Russia-backed hacking and influence operations.

“While we have not seen meaningful changes in the levels of malicious activity in this region overall, our Threat Analysis Group (TAG) has seen threat actors refocus their efforts on Ukrainian targets,” Walker said.

The company said they have identified “the attackers behind the GhostWriter threat group targeting Ukrainian government and military officials” and have “blocked these attempts”.

The company said it has increased Google account security protections. Google’s Advanced Protection Programme and Project Shield has been activated to protect user accounts as well as 100 Ukrainian websites, including local news services.

Moreover, to curb the spread of misinformation and disrupt disinformation campaigns online, Google has “blocked YouTube channels connected to Russia Today and Sputnik across Europe”.

Earlier Google had indefinitely paused the monetisation of Russian state-funded media such as RT across its platforms. Besides, the tech giant has also significantly limited recommendations globally for a number of Russian state-funded media outlets and “removed hundreds of channels and thousands of videos for violating its Community Guidelines”.

Google is also ensuring help, including physical security support, paid leave, assistance options and reimbursement for housing, travel and food for its employees forced to leave their homes. Instagram, YouTube Block Russian News Outlets RT and Sputnik Across Europe.

Google will also comply with any sanction requirements, according to Walker, who said it has curtailed products like Google Pay in Russia. But services like Search, Maps and YouTube remain currently active. Previously, other tech giants such as Meta, Apple, Twitter and Microsoft have also announced similar actions in relation to their business in Russia.
