Lina Khan-Led US FTC Grills Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg Over Company’s Acquisition of Virtual Reality Firm ‘Within’

Washington, December 21: Lina Khan-led US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) grilled Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a hearing about the company’s acquisition of virtual reality (VR) company called Within that owns the popular fitness app ‘Supernatural’.

Zuckerberg told FTC authorities during the hearing that fitness is not his priority in the VR space and he would rather focus on social, gaming and productivity use cases, reports TechCrunch. Mark Zuckerberg To Resign as Meta CEO Next Year? Facebook Parent Company Responds To Media Reports.

In July, the FTC had sued Meta in an attempt to block the deal, saying it was an anti-competitive move. Meta is currently losing billions of dollars per quarter on its VR projects. “Instead of competing on the merits, Meta is trying to buy its way to the top,” according to John Newman, Deputy Director, FTC Bureau of Competition.

“Meta already owns a best-selling virtual reality fitness app, and it had the capabilities to compete even more closely with Within’s popular Supernatural app. But Meta chose to buy market position instead of earning it on the merits,” he added. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg Says Apple App Store Policies Present ‘Conflict of Interest’.

The FTC is seeking to block virtual reality giant Meta and Zuckerberg from acquiring Within as Meta, formerly known as Facebook, is already a key player at each level of the VR sector.

The agency alleged that Meta and Zuckerberg are planning to expand Meta’s VR empire “with this attempt to illegally acquire a dedicated fitness app that proves the value of virtual reality to users.”

Supernatural offers a variety of high-quality workouts set to music, including tracks from A-list artists like Katy Perry, Imagine Dragons, Lady Gaga, and Coldplay, and virtually located in striking, photorealistic locales, like the Galapagos Islands. The agency said that according to Within’s co-founder and CEO, “Fitness is the killer use case for VR.”

  • Meta Takes Down Indian Firm CyberRoot Risk Advisory’s 40 Accounts, 900 Chinese Accounts Over Phishing Tricking People Online

Meta Takes Down Indian Firm CyberRoot Risk Advisory’s 40 Accounts, 900 Chinese Accounts Over Phishing Tricking People Online

New Delhi, Dec 16: Social media giant Meta has taken down over 40 accounts operated by an Indian firm CyberRoot Risk Advisory, allegedly involved in hacking-for-hire services, the online giant said in a report.

Meta also took down a network of about 900 fake accounts on Instagram and Facebook operated from China by an unknown entity. Elon Musk Suspends Twitter Accounts of CNN’s Donie O’Sullivan, the Washington Post’s Drew Harwell, Others for Covering His ‘Exact Real-Time Location’.

These accounts were focused on collecting data of people in Myanmar, India, Taiwan, the US and China, including military personnel, pro-democracy activists, government employees, politicians and journalists, according to the company’s Threat Report on the Surveillance-for-Hire Industry released on December 15.

“We removed a network of more than 40 accounts on Facebook and Instagram operated by an Indian firm called CyberRoot Risk Advisory Private. Rather than directly sharing malware on our apps, this group’s activity manifested primarily in social engineering and phishing, often intended to trick people into giving up their credentials to various online accounts across the internet,” the report said.

According to Meta, CyberRoot used fake accounts to create fictitious personas tailored to gain trust with the people they targeted around the world and to appear more credible, these personas impersonated journalists, business executives and media personalities. Microsoft Bans Crypto Mining From Its Online Services To Protect Its Cloud Service Customers: Report.

In some cases, CyberRoot also created accounts that were very identical to accounts connected to their targets like their friends and family members, with only slightly changed usernames, likely in an attempt to trick people into engaging, the report said. Meta said it found CyberRoot targeted people around the world involved in various industries, including cosmetic surgery and law firms in Australia, real estate and investment companies in Russia, private equity firms and pharmaceutical companies in the US, environmental and anti-corruption activists in Angola, gambling entities in the UK, and mining companies in New Zealand.

“They were focused on business executives, lawyers, doctors, activists, journalists and members of the clergy in countries like Kazakhstan, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Iceland,” the report said. Meta said it continues to investigate and take action against spyware vendors around the world, including in China, Russia, Israel, the US and India, who targeted people in about 200 countries and territories.

The social media firm in its research has found that the global surveillance-for-hire industry continues to grow and indiscriminately target people – including journalists, activists, litigants and political opposition – to collect intelligence, manipulate and compromise their devices and accounts across the internet.

Instagram Video of Sexual Assault on Women Restored by Meta Citing Newsworthiness in Content

New Delhi, December 14: Social media major Meta’s oversight board has upheld company’s decision to restore a video of sexual assault allegedly on a tribal women by a group of men on Instagram citing newsworthiness in the content, the board said on Wednesday.

In March 2022, an Instagram account describing itself as a platform for Dalit perspectives posted a video from India showing a woman being assaulted by a group of men. US: Teen Confesses to Killing Girl on Instagram Video Chat, Seeks Help For Disposing Body in Pennsylvania; Arrested.

Sharing details of the case, the board said that the woman’s face is not visible in the video and the text accompanying the video states that a “tribal woman” was sexually assaulted and harassed by a group of men in public, and that the video went viral. Lionel Messi Shares Instagram Post After Powering Argentina to FIFA World Cup 2022 Final With 3–0 Win Over Croatia.

The account which posted the video has around 30,000 followers, mostly located in India. “The board has upheld Meta’s decision to restore a post to Instagram containing a video of a woman being sexually assaulted by a group of men. The board has found that Meta’s ‘newsworthiness allowance’ is inadequate in resolving cases such as this at scale and that the company should introduce an exception to its adult sexual exploitation policy,” the board said in the decision copy.

After a user reported about the post, Meta removed it for violating the adult sexual exploitation policy which prohibits content that ‘depicts, threatens or promotes sexual violence, sexual assault or sexual exploitation’.

A Meta employee flagged the content removal via an internal reporting channel upon learning about it on Instagram. Meta’s internal teams then reviewed the content and applied a “newsworthiness allowance” which allows otherwise violating content to remain on Meta’s platforms if it is newsworthy and in the public interest.

Meta restored the content, placing the video behind a warning screen which prevents anyone under the age of 18 from viewing it, and later referred the case to the oversight board.

“The board finds that restoring the content to the platform, with the warning screen, is consistent with Meta’s values and human rights responsibilities,” the board said.

The board said that the video does not include explicit content or nudity, and the majority of the board members found that the victim is not identifiable.

“The warning screen, which prevents people under 18 from viewing the video, helps to protect the dignity of the victim, and protects children and victims of sexual harassment from exposure to disturbing or traumatising content,” the board said.

Meta Launches New Open-Source Software Tool ‘Hasher-Matcher-Actioner’ To Prevent Spread of Terror Content

San Francisco, December 14 : Meta has launched a new open-source software tool called “Hasher-Matcher-Actioner” (HMA) that will help platforms stop the spread of terror content, child exploitation, or any other violating content. With HMA, platforms will be able to scan for any violating content and take action as required.

HMA builds on Meta’s previous open-source image and video matching software, which can be used for any type of violating content. “Meta spent approximately $5 billion globally on safety and security last year, and has more than 40,000 people working on it,” said the company. WhatsApp New Feature: Meta-Owned Messaging Platform Lets Users See Profile Icons Within Groups Chats on iOS.

The new tool allows platforms to create and run their own databases, while also allowing them to utilise existing hash databases. Therefore, they need not save the offending images or videos themselves and can run all their content through the databases they use to detect posts that violate their rules, according to the company.

The company shared the tool shortly before it assumes the chair of the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT) board next month. It is a group it formed with Twitter, YouTube and Microsoft to fight online extremism back in 2017. GIFCT is an NGO that brings together technology companies to tackle terrorist content online through research, technical collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Facebook Parent Meta Shuts Down Connectivity Division Nearly 10 Years After Its Launch

San Francisco December 13: Meta has reportedly shut down its Connectivity division almost 10 years after launching the initiative. The company will now split the division across its infrastructure and central products teams, reports The Verge.

Launched in 2013, Meta Connectivity (formerly Facebook Connectivity) aimed to increase online usage so users could access the company’s social networks. Meta-Owned Facebook and Messenger To Get Community Chats Feature Soon.

Through the initiative, the company developed and later abandoned a project that involved high-flying, autonomous drones to beam the internet to remote areas of the world. It also focused on creating a low-Earth orbit satellite-based internet system similar to Starlink, but Amazon hired the team working on it last year.

It remains unclear when exactly Meta shut down its Connectivity arm, but the disappearance coincides with last month’s layoffs and reorganisation that eliminated about 11,000 jobs at the company. Facebook Parent Meta Planning To Lay Off ‘Thousands’ of Employees This Week: Reports.

Meta expects further losses in 2023 as the company is investing extensively in CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s costly effort to build the metaverse.

In addition to big initiatives including satellites, drones and an internet-connected helicopter, Meta Connectivity also provided free internet in developing countries, which allowed users to access only Facebook and a few other websites.

  • Meta Employees, Sacked in November, Claim They Didn’t Get Severance as Promised by CEO Mark Zuckerberg

Meta Employees, Sacked in November, Claim They Didn’t Get Severance as Promised by CEO Mark Zuckerberg

New Delhi, December 6: Several Meta employees, sacked by the company last month, have claimed they did not get the severance package as promised by Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. In one of the worst lay-offs ever in the tech industry, Zuckerberg sacked more than 11,000 employees — about 13 per cent of the global workforce — and extended hiring freeze through Q1 2023.

According to a CNBC report, employees who joined Meta via a corporate training programme claim “they are receiving inferior severance packages compared to other workers who were recently laid off”. The employees are members of Meta’s Sourcer Development Programme, which, in turn, is part of the company’s Pathways programme. Facebook Parent Meta Planning To Lay Off ‘Thousands’ of Employees This Week: Reports.

The laid off members of Meta’s Sourcer Development Programme said they were not contract workers and were categorised as short-term employees and received all the benefits of full-time employees, including insurance and retirement funds but not corporate stock packages. “We’ll cover the cost of healthcare for people and their families for six months,” said Zuckerberg, adding that the company will “provide three months of career support with an external vendor, including early access to unpublished job leads”.

However, members of the Sourcer Development Programme said they only received “8 weeks of base pay and three months of Continuation of Health Coverage (COBRA). The affected workers sent a letter to Zuckerberg and other Meta executives, asking for help to resolve the issue. However, they have not received any replies from Meta so far.

Meta did not comment on the report. The company had also promised to pay for all remaining paid time off (PTO) time and everyone impacted will receive their November 15, 2022 vesting of shares.

  • Meta Threatens To Ban News on Its Platform in US if Senate Passes ‘Journalism Competition and Preservation Act’ Bill

Meta Threatens To Ban News on Its Platform in US if Senate Passes ‘Journalism Competition and Preservation Act’ Bill

San Francisco, Dec 6: Meta on Tuesday warned to ban news in the US if the government passes a journalism bill that will require the social network to pay publishers for using their content.

Andy Stone, Meta’s head of policy communications, said on Twitter that if the Congress passes an “ill-considered journalism bill” as part of national security legislation, “we will be forced to consider removing news from our platform altogether rather than submit to the government-mandated negotiations that unfairly disregard any value we provide to news outlets through increased traffic and subscriptions”. Introduced last year, the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act (JCPA), once passed, will allow news publishers to negotiate with Facebook and Google over the use of their content.

The US Senate Judiciary Committee passed the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act in September, but it still has to pass through the full Senate.

Stone said that the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act “fails to recognise the key fact: publishers and broadcasters put their content on our platform themselves because it benefits their bottom line – not the other way around”.

He stressed that no company should be forced to pay for content “users don’t want to see and that’s not a meaningful source of revenue”. Sex Outside Marriage Banned in Indonesia As Parliament Approves New Criminal Code; Unmarried Couples Barred From Living Together.

Last year, Facebook pulled news from the platform in Australia over a similar legislation which forced it and Google to pay news publishers for content.

It later restored news content to its users in Australia.

Facebook also issued a similar threat in Canada over its Online News Act, which would also require the platform to pay publishers for sharing news.
