    New Delhi, August 1: The ban on popular battle royale game Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), which is the Indian version of PUBG, has resulted in a top e-sports event being postponed amid reports claiming a “China connection” behind the ban.

    Esports Premier League (ESPL) Season 2, to be played on BGMI platform from August 1-5, has been postponed owing to the ban. The esports event was set to see gamers from across the country with a prize pool of Rs 1 crore.

    “As we understand, the entities concerned will evaluate/pursue the matter in accordance with the directions issued by the government of India,” ESPL said in a statement. “We are, therefore, constrained to put the ESPL Season 2, on hold, in light of the government’s directions and the prevailing circumstances,” the company said.

    Meanwhile, Rooter, a leading game streaming and e-sports platform, also hosted a BGMI invitational esports tournament with a prize pool of Rs 15 lakh. The event was to be held from July 25-August 3 and those who downloaded the BGMI game before the ban could still play it. Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) Removed From Google Play Store & Apple App Store in India.

    Thirty-two Indian teams, including 24 invited teams and eight underdog teams were to face off in the 10-day tournament. Meanwhile, reports surfaced that inputs from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to the IT Ministry (MeitY) over a “China connection” where the BGMI was allegedly “communicating to servers in China” triggered the ban on the app.

    Late last month, the Indian government ordered Google and Apple to block the BGMI gaming app from their respective online stores under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000. The game developer Krafton said last month that BGMI had surpassed 100 million registered users in India.

    New Delhi, May 31: Online gaming platform Mobile Premier League (MPL) is laying off 100 employees and exiting the Indonesia market over poor growth. The current business metrics “do not justify further investments into this unit”, according to an internal email sent by MPL co-founders Sai Srinivas and Shubh Malhotra.

    “However, the return profile of Indonesia is several multiples lower than what we were and are seeing in India, or even in our nascent US business,” they added. The laid off employees will be given severance and benefits.

On a gross revenue basis, we will be at $220-250 million in the year ending March 2023. In fact, we have a massively growing market ahead of us, but in order to capture it, we need to be willing to operate more efficiently today,” the co-founders said in the internal email.

    “The last few months have been insane. The philosophy of growth at all costs is now reversed. The market is now rewarding profitable growth over growth at all costs. It is imperative that we as a company respond to these changes and respond fast,” they noted.

    MPL will now double down on its efforts on more promising areas of its business.
