Facebook Leads the Virtual Reality Headset Market, Global Market Grows Over 52% in Q1 2021

San Francisco, July 4: Led by Facebook, the global shipments of virtual reality (VR) headsets grew 52.4 per cent (year over year) in the first quarter of 2021, according to a new IDC report.

Standalone headsets, which feature an all-encompassing design such as the Oculus Quest 2 or the HTC Vive Focus, accounted for the vast majority of shipments, capturing 82.7 per cent share during the quarter, up from 50.5 per cent in the first quarter of 2020.  Facebook Starts Testing Ads in Its Oculus VR Headsets

The growing popularity of gaming, as well as fitness, has helped spread consumer awareness of VR while companies like Facebook have made the tech more accessible, the IDC said in a statement.

“Oculus has singlehandedly driven growth in the market as the company managed to capture almost two thirds share of global VR headset shipments during the quarter,” said Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC’s Mobile and Consumer Device Trackers.

“While the company currently dominates the consumer segment it faces competition in the commercial segment and its lack of presence in China leaves an opportunity for local brands as well as brands that can cater to businesses,” he added.

In addition to Oculus, Chinese companies DPVR and Pico also performed well during the quarter, finishing as the second and third ranked companies and growing 108.6 per cent and 44.7 per cent (YoY), respectively.

HTC and Sony rounded out the top 5 VR headset companies.

Looking ahead, IDC forecasts VR headset shipments to grow 28.9 per cent (YoY) in 2021.

The long-term outlook remains quite strong as global shipments are forecast to grow to 28.6 million in 2025 with a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 41.4 per cent.

“As companies continue to plan for a future that encompasses a combination of both in-person and remote work, we see VR playing an increasingly important role in driving next-generation collaboration, training, and digital events,” said Tom Mainelli, group vice president, Device and Consumer Research at IDC.

Dukaan, a SaaS platform for online stores, has announced that it clocked a growth of 110 per cent GMV leading to US$ 115 million annualised GMV over the last 30 days, placing it as an early market leader in India’s e-commerce enablement space. Dukaan began monetising in early May and has clocked its first revenue of over US$ 44 thousand.

Dukaan, launched in May 2020, has seen exponential growth in its adoption among small and medium business owners across the country. With over 3.5 million sellers under 40 categories on the platform, over two lakh orders have been processed since its inception. Dukaan is the only e-commerce enablement app that managed to grow at a rapid pace and hit six million downloads on the app store within a year.

Along with the significant growth in GMV, the daily active users have increased by 400 per cent over the last 3 months, leading to an increase in the volume and frequency of orders completed on the platform, owing to the nationwide lockdown that has placed increased significance on digital stores for products ranging from essentials, electronics, clothing to luxury goods. This is a validation of the adoption of digital technology by businesses at an increased pace across India.

While Dukaan was launched to support the small and medium businesses tide through and flourish during the Covid pandemic, various individuals have creatively utilised the platform to raise funds, deliver food, essentials and medicines to Covid patients.

“We created the Dukaan app with the aim to support and help local businesses that were facing a crisis during the raging pandemic. Within a year, we have evolved into a platform for businesses of any size, volume and geographical location, and today we provide multiple business features to simplify the e-commerce lifecycle. We will continue to work towards upgrading and evolving technology in the e-commerce space and aim to grow by half a million transacting stores per month, and over US$ 750 million in annualised GMV within next 12 months,” said Suumit Shah, Founder and CEO, Dukaan.

Dukaan secured US$6 million in seed funding in late 2020. Owing to the massive traction in the downloads and usage of the Dukaan app, it is now available on multiple platforms including Android, iOS platform and the web.

  • Chicken Wings Shortage In United States: Poultry Industry Impacted In Pandemic; Leads To Severe Shortage Across The Country

Chicken Wings Shortage In United States: Poultry Industry Impacted In Pandemic; Leads To Severe Shortage Across The Country

Have the chickens left the building in the United States? Things are not looking up for chicken wings enthusiasts in the country. There’s a poultry crisis broiling on the horizon with many restaurants reporting severe chicken wings shortage, that has forced them to hike up the price or completely take them off their menu. According to the country’s largest poultry producer, the increases in demand has led to wings shortage across the country.

Joe Sanderson, CEO of Sanderson Farms, at the Goldman Sachs Global Staples Forum on Tuesday said, “We cannot supply enough wings to anybody, at retail or at foodservice.”

According to FOXBusiness, Wing prices soared to $3.16 per pound for customers picking Sanderson’s dock, while boneless chicken breast prices have climbed 236% since the fall to $2.25 per pound while tenders have spiked 77% to $2.43.

    Why the sudden shortage?

The pandemic is the leading cause of the sudden dip in poultry production. The demand for comfort food – fried Chicken, Wings, tenders and what have you’s – exponentially increased during the lockdown.

The Chicken Sandwich war – The battle for chicken sandwich dominance- that began on August 12, 2019, to little fanfare took off like wildfire during the pandemic, with major fast-food chains like KFC, Mcdonalds and Burgerking throwing their hat into the coop. The orders soared and farms couldn’t keep up with the demand.

The volatile weather also impeded the supply chain as it impacted the chicken flocks. The National Chicken Council blamed the harsh winter as a root cause and indicated that extra time is needed for supply to “catch up” with demand.

The poultry industry is already hard at work controlling the messaging around the growing alarm over a chicken shortage. National Chicken Council spokesman Tom Super said there was a “very tight supply but short of a shortage.”

Last month, a regional fast-food chain, Charlotte-based Bojangles, said that they were short on chicken supremes at some locations. They are still running low on tenders, fox reported.

  • Delay in issuing property related documents leads to e-faith

Delay in issuing property related documents leads to e-faith

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palik (BBMP) is in the process of implementing the e-Aastha system in 97 wards in the core zone. However, the roll-out is having an impact on the issuance of sour extracts and khata certificates and collection of property tax arrears by 2007-2018.

In a press release on Saturday, BBMP Commissioner N. Manjunath Prasad urged the citizens to cooperate with the civic body and bear with the delay in issuing the requisite property documents. The reason for the delay is attributed to the transfer of the data set of properties from the old system to the E-Aastha system.

In November last year, the BBMP implemented the e-Aastha pilot in three wards – Nilasandra, Shantinagar and Shantinagar – in the Shantinagar division. The project is being implemented with the aim of bringing more transparency, preventing illegal transactions and cutting out middlemen, besides giving a digital avatar to the property documents.

BBMP officials said that the benefits of e-Aastha are manifold. Impersonation is avoided during registration because property documents will bear the owner’s photograph and illegally created property documents can be easily identified. For example, a Khata certificate issued under the new system would contain 46 different types of information. The documents will be digitally signed, barcoded and uploaded to DigiLocker.

The release said that under the first phase, e-Aastha system is being implemented in all the 100 wards of the core zone. Under the second phase, it will be implemented in wards falling under the newly added areas – Mahadevapura, Yelahanka, Dasarahalli, Bommanahalli, Rajarajeswaranagar.

‘Judas and the Black Messiah’ movie review: Daniel Kaluuya leads an incandescent cast in this electrifying drama

Director King makes good on his promise of telling Hampton’s story and the ideology of the BPP through a beautifully-shot tale

One of the things that ran through my mind watching the terrifically thrilling Judas and the Black Messiah was how young some of the players are in this horrific tragedy. Fred Hampton, the chairman of the Chicago chapter of the Black Panther Party, was only 21 when he was assassinated and Bill O’Neal, 17 when he was recruited by the FBI.

That is the age when a certain kind of person is in university, trying to change the world, rebelling without a pause against every injustice, perceived or true. The liberal thinker, who can afford to look at the world with the hope of fixing things through the prism of privilege.

The film opens with O’Neal (Lakeith Stanfield) stealing cars posing to be an FBI officer. When Agent Roy Mitchell (Jesse Plemons) tells O’Neal, he can make all his charges go away if he (O’Neal) agrees to be an informant on BPP activities, he reluctantly agrees.

He infiltrates the Illinois chapter of the BPP where Hampton is building bridges with the rival gangs with his oratory as well as community outreach programs such as giving free breakfast for children. Violence begets violence with a BPP member being killed as he is being transported from hospital after having been shot by a police officer. The BPP retaliate with a shootout killing several officers. There is a shootout at the BPP office, which ends up being bombed by the police. Hampton is sent to prison for stealing $71 worth of ice-cream bars (!) and O’Neal rises up the ranks to become security captain.

    Judas and the Black Messiah

    • Director: Shaka King
    • Cast: Daniel Kaluuya, Lakeith Stanfield, Jesse Plemons, Dominique Fishback, Martin Sheen
    • Story line: An account of the betrayal of Black Panther Party chairman, Fred Hampton
    • Run time: 126 minutes

The FBI have another mole, who goes into different BPP offices seeking shelter, thus giving the FBI a chance to get a warrant and search the place. Released from prison, Hampton is identified as a threat and FBI director, J. Edgar Hoover (Martin Sheen), orders Hampton’s assassination—what does the Bible say about old men’s dreams and young men’s visions? O’Neal is again coerced into drugging Hampton—not with a kiss as much as a drink.

The acting is incandescent. As Fred Hampton, Get Out’s Daniel Kaluuya deserves the Golden Globe and every other award that comes his way. Another Get Out alum, Lakeith Stanfield, matches Kaluuya toe-to-toe as O’Neal torn between his loyalty, belief and self-preservation. Plemons as Mitchell brings the dilemma of the good man who tries to do the right thing when there isn’t one in sight. Dominique Fishback as Deborah, Hampton’s girlfriend and mother of his child is teasing, tough and tender while Martin Sheen as Hoover is downright creepy.

Judas and the Black Messiah fearlessly plunges into the alleyways that Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7 steered clear of and is all the better for it. The dialogue is a razor-sharp mix of historical speeches and street smarts (when Mitchell asks O’Neal why he uses a badge to steal cars, O’Neal says, “A badge is like you got the whole army behind you.”)

Like Shaka King, making an assured feature film debut, says, the film is The Departed in the world of counterintelligence. King also makes good on his promise of telling Hampton’s story and the ideology of the BPP through an electrifying, beautifully-shot, lovingly-scored tale.
