  • Huawei HarmonyOS 3 To Be Launched on July 27, 2022

Beijing: Chinese conglomerate Huawei, hit hard by the US sanctions, on Monday said it will launch its proprietary operating system (OS) HarmonyOS 3 on July 27, as the country aims to cut its dependency on foreign software. The Shenzhen-based telecom giant announced to launch its updated alternative to Google Android OS on the Chinese microblogging site Weibo. Huawei P50 & Huawei P50 Pro Smartphones Launched; Check Prices, Features & Specifications.

The company did not elaborate on the features of the new system, reports South China Morning Post. Huawei released its HarmonyOS 2 for variety of products in September 2020. As of now, the Huawei HarmonyOS is available in China, across multiple different devices. This includes smartphones, smart home appliances and more.

By the end of last year, 220 million Huawei devices were equipped with HarmonyOS. Android still remains the world’s most popular mobile operating system, commanding a 72 per cent share of the global market as of July, according to data from StatCounter.

The company first unveiled the OS back in 2019 during its Huawei Developer Conference, emphasising its cross-platform functionalities. HarmonyOS 2.0 was later officially announced, with several improvements along with an extension of the list of devices that support the OS.

Huawei Technologies reported a 28.5 per cent dip in its revenue last year, along with a sharp downfall in its smartphone business. Despite a revenue decline in 2021, “our ability to make a profit and generate cash flows is increasing, and we are more capable of dealing with uncertainty”, said Meng Wanzhou, Huawei’s CFO.

The company said it is “readjusting” its business portfolio to tap new digital and 5G opportunities. Huawei said it continues to see steady sales growth in smart wearables, smart screens, true wireless stereo (TWS) earbuds, and Huawei Mobile Services (HMS).

  • Delhi Court Summons Huawei India CEO Li Xiongwei After IT Search at Gurugram Office

New Delhi, June 11: A Delhi Court has summoned Huawei India CEO Li Xiongwei and four other top officials on a complaint of the Income Tax department stating the “willful failure” of providing account books and relevant documents during a search at the Chinese electronic company’s Gurugram office.

“The culpable mental state of the accused persons is to be presumed,” stated Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Anurag Thakur in a recent order, stating that there is sufficient material on record to summon the accused persons under 275-B and section 278-B of the Income Tax Act, 1961 (Deals punishment for failure in facilitating an authorized officer to inspect the books of account or other documents). Volkswagen in Talks To Acquire Huawei’s Autonomous Driving Unit: Report.

As per the complaint, on February 15, the Income Tax department conducted a search at Huawei Communications’ Gurugram office for the verification of the books of accounts.

However, during the course of the search, company CEO Li Xiongwei, Sandeep Bhatia, Amit Duggal and Long Cheng, willfully and deliberately did not comply with the department, it said.

They also alleged that the company officials failed to provide adequate facilities to the IT officers and did not provide the relevant documents asked. The court also noted that Xiongwei and others deliberately chose to give vague answers to some questions in their statement to the IT department.

It further noted that the accused were only trying to somehow confuse the authorised officer in order to deny access to documents and unreasonably took a long time for furnishing data and information which have been readily available.

Recently Xiongwei had approached the Delhi High Court seeking quashing of a Look Out Circular (LOC) against him which restrained the Chinese national from leaving the country.

  • Canada Bans China’s Huawei, ZTE From 5G Networks

Toronto, May 20: After the US, Canada has now moved to ban Chinese telecommunication giants Huawei and ZTE from its 5G networks in order to ensure the “long term safety of our telecommunications infrastructure”. Following the steps of its partners — including the UK, the US, Australia and New Zealand — Canada decided to ban the two Chinese tech companies by the start of 2028.

The five countries make up an intelligence-sharing arrangement named ‘Five Eyes’. “The government of Canada is ensuring the long term safety of our telecommunications infrastructure. As part of that, the government intends to prohibit the inclusion of Huawei and ZTE products and services in Canada’s telecommunications systems,” Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry Francois-Philippe Champagne said in a statement late on Thursday. Volkswagen in Talks To Acquire Huawei’s Autonomous Driving Unit: Report.

The move will improve Canada’s mobile Internet services and “protect the safety and security of Canadians”. Telecommunications companies that operate in Canada would no longer be permitted to make use of designated equipment or services provided by Huawei and ZTE.

“As well, companies that already use this equipment installed in their networks would be required to cease its use and remove it,” said the minister. Beijing reacted to the Canadian move, saying the security concerns raised by Canada are a “pretext for political manipulation”, accusing Canada of working with the US to suppress Chinese companies. US President Joe Biden in November signed the law to ban Huawei and ZTE from getting approval for network equipment licences in the country.

Earlier, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) designated Huawei and ZTE as national security threats to communications networks — making it harder for the US firms to buy equipment from them. Under the new law, the FCC is required to no longer review or approve any authorisation application for equipment posing a clear risk to national security.
