  • Snake Charmer Cartoon Used by Spanish Newspaper ‘La Vanguardia’ To Portray India’s Economic Growth; Netizens Unamused

Mumbai, October 14: India is making a mark in the global economy and the world is acknowledging it. India’s economic prowess has been identified by International Monetary Fund (IMF), which termed India a bright star. Amid the recession, India’s elevation to the world’s fifth-largest economy overtaking the United Kingdom grabbed everyone’s attention. India is on its way to becoming a global leader and there is no doubt about it.

However, western media is still not able to erase their image of India as a land of snake charmers and its colonial past. A Spanish newspaper found itself in the centre of controversy by painting India’s economic power using a rather racist stereotype. La Vanguardia, a Spanish daily, issued a story ‘La hora de la economia india’, or ‘The hour of the Indian economy on its front page. • Apple Sold Over 1.2 Million iPhones in India in Q2, Records 94% Growth

New Delhi: Continuing its growth in India driven by local manufacturing, Apple sold over 1.2 million iPhones in the country in the second quarter (Q2) this year, registering a massive 94 per cent growth (year-on-year), the data showed on Monday. According to data shared by market intelligence firm CyberMedia Research (CMR), the growth was driven by the stupendous sale of iPhone 12 and 13 models. Nearly 1 million of the total shipped iPhones were ‘Make in India’ devices. Apple Rolls Out iOS 15.6, iPadOS 15.6 With New Features & Bug Fixes.

“Through the course of the second quarter, Apple continued its India market momentum with a stupendous YoY growth, driven by increased local iPhone manufacturing. The iPhone 12 series, along with the iPhone 13 series, accounted for the most iPhones shipped into the market,” said Prabhu Ram, Head-Industry Intelligence Group (IIG), CMR.

Apple iPads logged an impressive 34 per cent growth (on-year) in India and the company sold over 0.2 million devices in the country.

“Apple iPad (Gen 9) and iPad Air 2022 accounted for a lion’s share of the iPad shipments, according to the Q2 data. CMR expects iPhones to garner 4 per cent smartphone market share in India while iPads are set to log 20 per cent market share in its respective category. The macro environment continues to be tough for the smartphone brands in India, owing to inflationary pressures, weakening rupee, and mellowed consumer demand.

“The premium smartphone segment continues to be immune, and has benefited from consumer inclination for revenge buying in the new normal,” said Ram. Apple’s enhanced and diversified iPhone production capabilities in India, along with aggressive retail initiatives, continue to contribute to its strong growth momentum in India.

Earlier this year, the tech giant confirmed it has started manufacturing its top-selling iPhone 13 smartphone in India. Apple first started manufacturing iPhones in India in 2017, with iPhone SE. In Q1 2022, Apple shipped nearly 1 million ‘Make-in-India’ iPhones, registering an overall growth of 22 per cent led by iPhone 12 and 13.

  • Crypto, Blockchain, NFT Jobs Witness 804% Growth in India Post COVID-19: Report

Bengaluru, June 21: Job postings for cryptocurrency, blockchain, NFTs have grown 804 per cent between April 2020 to April 2022, according to a report.

The report by global job portal Indeed also revealed an acceleration in the market’s demand. In 2022, the increase was 315 per cent.

Job postings in April 2022 were 15 times more than in 2019, highlighting the role of the pandemic in this sustained growth.

The Covid-19 pandemic has fast tracked the adoption of technology across functions in India, hence technology professionals are more in demand than ever before, especially with expertise in newer areas like cryptocurrency, NFTs and blockchain, the report showed. Cryptocurrency Fraud: Indian Investors Likely Lost Rs 1,000 Cr to Fake Crypto Exchanges, Says Report.

Application developer is the top job role across this field, followed by data engineer and full stack developer.

The data also shows that crypto roles appear to be one of the biggest share of hires in overall technology job roles, increasing from 41.22 per cent in 2019 – 2020 to 67.48 per cent in 2021 -2022.

“Being a technology first economy, Indian firms are rapidly investing in technologies that will put the country at the forefront of this new digital era. Technology hubs like Bengaluru and Hyderabad continue to lead with hiring in the sector while the national capital region is also seeing a fair share of interest in the sector,” said Sashi Kumar, Head of Sales for Indeed India, in a statement.

Although “blockchain promises to be an exciting new field of work and offers tremendous scope for application, the sector is still very nascent,” Kumar added.

It still has scaling issues and security concerns. Nevertheless, sectors such as finance, healthcare, and gaming are increasingly implementing decentralised finance, signalling the growing demand for jobs, the report said.

A global report by Gartner forecasts that the business value generated by blockchain will grow rapidly, reaching $176 billion by 2025, potentially creating more job prospects.

  • Twitter Enters Restructuring Mode, Focuses on User Growth

New Delhi, June 2: As Twitter pauses hiring, the micro-blogging platform is reportedly shifting employees away from audio Spaces, Communities and newsletters verticals for areas that “will have the greatest positive impact to the public conversation”.

The restructuring is happening under Jay Sullivan, the new head of product and interim head of revenue, reports Bloomberg.

Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal last month fired consumer product leader Kayvon Beykpour and head of revenue product Bruce Falck, saying there is a hiring freeze now and Twitter will also pause spending in most areas. Twitter To Shut Down TweetDeck for Mac From July 1, 2022: Report

Now, under Sullivan, the company is refocusing efforts on user growth and personalisation, as Elon Musk has put the $44 billion takeover deal on hold over the presence of fake accounts on the platform.

“We are making some updates to our consumer product team structure and roadmap to better focus on the areas that will have the greatest positive impact to the public conversation,” a Twitter spokesperson was quoted as saying. Jack Dorsey Steps Down From Twitter Board, Confirms Elon Musk

Agrawal had said that the company will also be reviewing all extended offers to determine criticality and those that should be pulled back.

“We are not planning company-wide layoffs, but leaders will continue making changes to their organizations to improve efficiencies as needed,” Agrawal had said in a memo to employees.

Twitter has paused most hiring and backfills, except for business critical roles as determined by ‘Staff’ members.

However, the company is working on the Edit button as promised.

Despite the ongoing tussle between Musk and Agrawal, the Twitter board is keen to see the $44 billion takeover deal go through as it is in the “best interest of all shareholders”.

The Tesla CEO has said that the $44 billion deal at $54.20 a share “cannot move forward” until the Twitter CEO discloses actual bot numbers.

While Twitter maintains it has less than 5 per cent fake/spammy accounts on its platform, Musk believes the number can be as high at 50 per cent, and wants Agrawal to come clean on this.

  • Netflix Lays Off 150 US-Based Employees Amid Slow Revenue Growth: Report

San Francisco: Streaming giant Netflix has laid off nearly 150 employees, primarily in the US, as it suffers from slow user growth amid stalled paid subscription. Several top-notch creative professionals from its original series vertical, such as Sebastian Gibbs and Negin Salmasi, have been asked to go, reports TechCrunch. Netflix Asks Its Employees To Quit if They Don’t Like Its Content: Report.

“As we explained on earnings, our slowing revenue growth means we are also having to slow our cost growth as a company. So sadly, we are letting around 150 employees go today, mostly US-based,” a Netflix spokesperson was quoted as saying in the report late on Tuesday. “These changes are primarily driven by business needs rather than individual performance, which makes them especially tough as none of us want to say goodbye to such great colleagues,” the spokesperson added.

Netflix saw its stock tumbling by 20 per cent after it reported a loss of 2 lakh paid subscribers in the first quarter of 2022, its first subscriber loss in over a decade. Moreover, it now forecasts a global paid subscriber loss of 20 lakh for the April-June quarter (Q2).

“Depending on your role, you may need to work on titles you perceive to be harmful. If you’d find it hard to support our content breadth, Netflix may not be the best place for you,” the company said.

Netflix last month laid off several experienced journalists and writers working for its entertainment site Tudum which it launched only in December last year. Netflix had hired experienced entertainment journalists from publications including Vice, Bustle and others. According to reports, most of the Tudum culture and trends team was fired.

The company has also told its employees that if they do not agree with its content, they can leave the streaming giant, a move that received a thumbs up from Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
