Marks & Spencers Launches ‘More Inclusive’ Lingerie Range Inspired By The Global Equality Conversation Following George Floyd’s Death

The death of George Floyd – the tragic event that spearheaded activism movements across the globe – has prompted Marks and Spencer to take on a more proactive role in highlighting racial bias by launching a “more inclusive” range of lingerie partly inspired by the “global conversation” around racial injustice. According to the brand, they “recognized a  need to do more,” which spurred them to launch a Nothing Neutral About It campaign that offers more colours, sizes and choice within the neutral category.

The store statement said: “The global conversations around race and equality over the last 12 months spurred us to go faster in creating a better, more inclusive range. From the product offer to the names, to the marketing, we’ve worked for hand in hand with our colleague Culture & Heritage network to deliver a campaign we’re proud of and an underwear range that provides more colours, more sizes and more choice so that all of our customers have the freedom to complement or contrast with their individual skin tone in a way that suits their own personal style.”

The retailers found that there was a lack of inclusivity in their previous product in terms of colours since it only served lighter skin tones. They believe the new colours in the nude and neutral spectrum will adequately cater to all ethnicities.

Laura Charles, the M&S director of lingerie said: “We are the UK market leaders in bras and knickers and with that comes a responsibility to ensure what we sell makes all of our customers feel fantastic. We listened when our customers and colleagues told us we hadn’t got it right when it came to colour; both in the choices available and the way we talked about the neutral shades.”

The retailer said that after receiving and listening to customer feedback, they went ahead launched a  new campaign that had more colours in their nude and neutral range to suit all skin tones. The new colours are reportedly named after gemstones such as Topaz, Daily Mail Reported.

The store will also launch a range of post-surgery bras for women who have had a mastectomy and use ‘representative models.

Laura Charles said that they feel the responsibility to make every woman look and feel fantastic in their products and the global conversation around racial bias in the past year has only made them work faster in achieving that goal.

It feels good that now I can be choosy about my roles: Joju George

The actor, who has had a dream run in Malayalam cinema, on playing a cop yet again in upcoming release, ‘Nayattu’ and cementing his position in the industry

If there is one artiste in Malayalam cinema inspiring aspiring actors, it would be Joju George. His journey from a junior artiste (Mazhavilkoodaaram, 1995) to one of the bankable stars in the industry has been nothing short of a dream run. Having emerged as a versatile actor, Joju is elated that he has some interesting films lined up for release. Ready to hit screens on April 8 is Nayattu, directed by Martin Prakkat.

Joju will be seen in yet another police role in Nayattu. “I might have played over 40 police characters till date. But this is a cut above the rest. He is a hefty character, literally and figuratively. I was at my heaviest, 132 kilogram, when I did the role!” laughs Joju, adding that he is now trying to get back to shape.

Without revealing much about the plot, Joju says that Nayattu is a “survival movie”, revolving around three police personnel, SI Maniyan (Joju), Praveen Michael (Kunchacko Boban) and Sunitha (Nimisha Sajayan) who are on the run. “The film also looks at the lives of policemen, up close and personal, an aspect that has been rarely explored in our cinema,” he adds.

Nayattu is scripted by real-life cop, Shahi Kabir, who wrote the thriller, Joseph, which took Joju’s career to new heights. He towered as the titular character, a retired police officer, who goes all out to unearth a crime. “I was the first one to hear the story of Nayattu, when we were working on Joseph. I love Shahi’s stories as I can easily connect with the emotions that he puts across. His characters are real and rooted… and their journey is phenomenal,” says Joju.

The actor points out that Nayattu will be a project that Malayalam cinema will be proud about. “A lot of effort has gone into the script, designing the plot, shooting location, choosing the cast…There are many new faces who have given vibrant performances. Camera, editing, soundscape, music…every department shines through,” he says. This is his first work with Martin as an actor, although they have jointly produced films such as Charlie and Udaharanam Sujatha. “When I asked him for a role in his directorial debut, ABCD, he said I was not ready! (laughs) I don’t know whether I was in his mind when he heard the story of Nayattu. Since the film has been shot in sync sound, I haven’t seen the film as a whole. But I am sure this will be a prestigious project in Martin’s career; you can see his growth as a director,” he adds.

Joju admits that he still has not come to terms with the fact that he is getting to share the screen with big names in Malayalam cinema. “I’m excited when I meet them. I often wonder if it was difficult for them to accommodate an artiste like me who came into cinema playing blink-and-you-miss kind of roles,” he says.

He makes note of his recent release One, a political thriller, in which he plays Babychan, secretary of the ruling party and a classmate and close friend of Chief Minister Kadakkal Chandran, played by Mammootty. “When I used to go from one film location to another looking for roles or as a junior artiste, I would watch Mammookka [Mammootty], Lalettan [Mohanlal] and other actors from a distance. I wouldn’t dare to go near them. My friends used to come with me then. Many years later, after watching One, one of those friends told me that he had goosebumps when he heard me address Mammookka as ‘eda’ (Hey you) in a scene. Chackochan [Kunchacko Boban] was already a star when I met him the first time; he has always supported me.”

Joju’s upcoming releases are Malik, Thuramukham, Pada, Star and Oru Thathwika Avalokanam. “Besides intense characters, there are a couple of feel-good roles as well. There is Madhuram an out-an-out romantic tale directed by Ahammed Khabeer, director of June. It shows how love blooms in the lives of people of different age groups. In Peace, I play this carefree dad, who can’t wait to get married again!”

Joju is thrilled about his Tamil début in Dhanush-starrer Jagame Thanthiram, directed by Karthik Subbaraj and scheduled for an OTT release. “It is a larger-than-life character. The film happened because of Joseph and Chola (Alli in Tamil),” says Joju. He is also part of Buffoon, also from Karthik’s production house.

Meanwhile, he keeps mum about his entry into Telugu industry. “Let it be a surprise. It is a big budget project,” he chuckles.

He is a two-time winner of Kerala State film awards — in 2015 he won special jury mention for Oru Second Class Yathra and Lukka Chuppi and in 2018 for best character actor for Chola and Joseph. “It feels good that now I can be choosy about my roles instead of doing every film that comes my way. I want to keep improving myself. I feel I ought to concentrate more and look further into nuances of the characters,” he says.

Before signing off, Joju has advice for aspiring actors. “I get messages saying they have been struggling for two or three years. It took years for me to get my first dialogue and nearly two decades to get a break. It is important that you learn from the struggles, rejections and each film. If you have the right kind of approach and work hard, this is the best industry to work, for both men and women. There are enough opportunities out there…”

  • Malayalam music composer Prince George wants to take to singing next

Malayalam music composer Prince George wants to take to singing next

Composer Prince George shares his experience scoring music for the Malayalam film ‘Mohan Kumar Fans’

Scoring for the Malayalam film Mohan Kumar Fans hit home closer than his other projects for composer Prince George. The plot follows the life of an aspiring singer Krishnan Unni (played by Kunchacko Boban) who participates in a music reality show in a bid to make it to the film industry.

Prince’s journey to films happened via that route; in 2004, as a 15-year-old, he won second place in the music reality show Gandharva Sangeetham Junior which aired on Kairali TV. “That win was long ago. I wanted to learn the technical aspect of filmmaking and sound because films were always part of the plan,” he says.

So, despite winning a singing competition, he turned his attention to sound engineering. Prince then graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune before moving to Mumbai in 2012 to work as sound director/composer. His diploma film Allah is Great was the official selection for the Student Oscar Awards; he was the music composer for the Omani film Azeel, and worked as the sound designer for the short film Kids in Suits and Goodbye Mayfly (Kashmiri short) besides the documentary Reflecting Her.

In 2017, he returned to Kerala with a desire to make it into Malayalam films, much like the protagonist of Mohan Kumar Fans.

He made his Malayalam debut with Vijay Super Pournamiyum (2019) also directed by Jis Joy. He has had to wait a year for the release of Mohan Kumar Fans, but the wait has been worth it due to the feedback. “Feedback has been great and the songs are doing well; the songs are important in the narrative since it is placed at crucial junctures.”

Despite Malayalam cinema’s minimal song trend, this film’s seven songs gave Prince the space to try out various genres such as devotional, melody, koothu and funky. “Different genres of music are for the film’s different moods. Plus I got to work with singers such as KS Chithra, Vijay Yesudas, Shweta Mohan, Benny Dayal and Rimi Tomy besides others.” He too has sung a song in the film.

Since he is now composing music in Malayalam, how about pursuing a singing career in parallel since he is trained in Carnatic and Hindustani classical music? “I want to pursue both. I want to be a singer-composer,” he adds.

The Minneapolis City Council emerged from closed session to announce a record settlement, including $ 500,000 for the neighborhood where Mr. Floyd was arrested. Mr. Floyd’s family lawyer, Ben Crump, called a news conference at 1 o’clock in the afternoon to include family members.

Mr. Floyd was pronounced dead on May 25 after Derek Chauvin, a former officer who is white, pressed his knee against his neck for about nine minutes. Mr. Floyd’s death sometimes led to violent protests in Minneapolis and beyond and placed a national ban on racial justice.

“I hope today will focus on the voice of the family and anything they want to share,” Council President Lisa Bender said. “But I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family, on behalf of the entire city council. George Floyd, his friends and all our communities who are mourning his loss.”

Mr. Floyd’s family filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city in July, with Mr. Chauvin and three other firing officers alleging his death. It was alleged that the officers violated Mr. Floyd’s rights when they intercepted him, and that the city allowed a culture of excessive force, racism and impotence to flourish in his police force.

In 2019, Minneapolis agreed to pay $ 20 million to the family of Justin Ruskczyk Dondam, an unarmed woman who was shot by an officer, as she called 911 for possible crimes behind her home Did report for hearing.

Unspecified indemnity and special damages were sought in a federal trial in an amount determined by the jury. A receiver is appointed to ensure that the city properly trains and supervises officers in the future.

Meanwhile, another potential juror was dismissed on Friday because he admitted the defendant’s negative attitude.

A recent college graduate woman stated that she had given Mr. Watched the video of Floyd’s arrest and closely read the news coverage of the case. In response to the jury pool questionnaire, she stated that she had a “somewhat negative” view of Mr. Chauvin and thought she held Floyd’s neck for too long.

“I could only watch part of the video, and what I saw as a human, me, it didn’t give me a good impression,” she said. She said that she did not watch the video in its entirety because “I just couldn’t watch it.”

The woman repeatedly stated that she could set aside her opinion and decide the case on the facts, but Mr. Chauvin’s lawyer, Eric Nelson, nonetheless used one of his 15 challenges to dismiss her.

With jury selection in its fourth day, six people have been seated – five men and one woman. According to Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill, three of the people seated are white, one is multinational, one is Hispanic and one is black.

Judge Cahill has set a three-week time for jury selection, with no more statements than March 29.

Friday’s quick dismissal already echoes for similar reasons in other cases. On Thursday, a woman was sacked after saying she “could not unseat the video” of Mr Chauvin, pinning Mr Floyd.

Mr. Nelson pressed the woman fiercely on whether she could be impartial despite her strong opinions.

“Looking into your heart and looking into your mind can you assure us that you can set all that, all that, and focus only on the evidence that is presented in this court room ? ” Mr. Nelson asked.

He said, “I can assure you, but as you mentioned earlier, the video is going to be a big part of the evidence and I am not changing my view of it.”

The identities of potential gamblers are being protected and are not shown on live-streamed videos of the proceedings.

Mr. Chauvin and three other officers were fired. Others face an August trial on aid and libel charges. The defense has not said whether Chauvin will testify in his defense.

  • George Kora’s ‘Thirike’ to release on Neestream later this week

George Kora’s ‘Thirike’ to release on Neestream later this week

The co-writer of Njandukalude Nattil Oridavela, George Kora débuts as director with the digital release, Thirike

The trailer of Thirike promises a ‘heart-in-the-right-place’ kind of film; it follows the story of the bond between two brothers, one of whom is a person with Down syndrome. Written and co-directed by George Kora, who earlier co-wrote Njandukalude Nattil Oridavela, the film releases on Neestream on February 26. “Had I not found Gopi (Gopi Krishnan), the film wouldn’t have been made,” says George.

Having written the script four years ago, George didn’t pursue it as he wasn’t sure of finding an actor with Down syndrome, like Gopi. Gopi plays Ismu, the elder brother to George’s Thoma. George adds that he discovered Gopi with the help of Dr Shaji Thomas John of Baby Memorial Hospital, Kozhikode.

.“I asked Dr. Shaji if he could recommend someone for the role. He told me ‘I mentor 10,000-odd persons with Down syndrome. Tell me the story.’ He said if anyone could do the role, it was this person and that I could make the film. I was shocked — that was a one in 10,000 shot that my film would get made,” he says.

George Kora and Gopi Krishnan in the film

A couple of days later Dr. Shaji shared a few Tik-Tok videos with him. “They were videos of Gopi, I watched them over and over. We had found our guy.” A phone call to Gopi’s parents later, the family met George in Kochi.

The duo hit it off immediately. “It is destiny, his greatest wish is to be in cinema. He is a complete cinephile, his life revolves around cinema,” George says of the 22 year-old.

Thirike is possibly the first Malayalam film to feature an actor with Down syndrome in a lead role. George calls the film a “manifestation of my wish for a brother”; he doesn’t have one. Thirike was to have released last year.

A few prominent OTT platforms that the filmmaker approached didn’t show interest because there was no ‘big name’ in the cast. Neestream, which gained prominence with the release of The Great Indian Kitchen, then picked it up.

George calls Thirike a celebration of people with Down syndrome, of seeing them for what they are without the filter of sympathy. “I was very sure about it when I wrote the screenplay. Let’s celebrate them. They are fascinating, pure people. With all the pros of a child and none of the cons of adults,” he remarks.

A series of acting workshops was held to prepare Gopi for his role. Says George, “He has a fascinating toolkit; he was always in the moment and not thinking of other things. He has the inherent qualities to be an actor. I tweaked the character around Gopi’s style and rhythm because his timing with humour is great. His mother is his shadow, she schooled him on the dialogues and everything else.”

George’s co-director on the project is Sam Xavier. “I have known Sam since college. With him there, I could disconnect with what was happening behind the camera. As a writer, I wrote closer home for Thoma while exploring the character. There is no hero turn, just an honest telling.” Actor Shanti Krishna, who was the lead in Njandukalude…, appears in a prominent role in Thirike as well. He confesses to having a soft corner for her. “She was the heroine in my first film, she is so graceful; she is underutilised as an actor,” he adds.
