  • French President Emmanuel Macron Orders Multiple Investigations After His Phone Number Appeared in Leaked Database of Pegasus Project

French President Emmanuel Macron Orders Multiple Investigations After His Phone Number Appeared in Leaked Database of Pegasus Project

Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron has ordered multiple investigations to be carried out after his phone number, as well as those of his former Prime Minister and the majority of his 20-strong Cabinet, appeared in the leaked database at the heart of the Pegasus Project, The Guardian reported. What Is Pegasus Spyware? All You Need To Know About the Israeli Software That Can Be Used for Tapping Phone Calls and Snooping WhatsApp Chats.

French Prime Minister Jean Castex said on Wednesday the Elysee (official residence of the French President) had “ordered a series of investigations”, after vowing to “shed all light on the revelations”, the report said.

But Castex said it is too early to comment or announce any new security measures or other action without knowing “exactly what happened”. He said: “We are going to look at this very closely.”

French politicians expressed shock after the mobile numbers of Macron, former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe and 14 serving ministers, including those for justice and foreign affairs, appeared in the leaked data.

The mobile phone of former Environment Minister Francois de Rugy showed digital traces of activity associated with NSO Group’s spyware, according to forensic analysis undertaken by the Pegasus Project investigation. The Guardian said research by the Pegasus Project suggests that Morocco was the country that may have been interested in Macron and his senior team, raising fears that their phones were selected by one of France’s close diplomatic allies.

De Rugy reiterated on Wednesday that France and Morocco have an extremely close diplomatic relationship and explanations were needed. He said he was “very shocked that this could have happened between friendly states”, the report said. Morocco has said that it “categorically rejects and condemns these unfounded and false allegations”, adding that it was “erroneous” and “false” to say the country had infiltrated the phones of national or foreign public figures, the report said. He said he had asked for an audience with the Moroccan Ambassador and had referred the issue to the French state prosecutor.

Eric Zemmour, a controversial journalist and TV debate-show star who has been labelled France’s most famous far-right ideologue, also appears in the data, The Guardian said. The report said currently considering whether to run in the presidential election next spring, he tweeted of his own potential targeting: “If the government knew but did nothing, that is a scandal. If they didn’t know, it’s worrying.”

  • Oscar-winning producer Guneet Monga receives second highest civilian French honour

Oscar-winning producer Guneet Monga receives second highest civilian French honour

Monga was given the honour of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters at the Residence of France for her contribution to world cinema

Oscar-winning producer Guneet Monga, known for backing films like “The Lunchbox” and “Masaan”, was awarded with the second highest civilian French honour by French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Dria on Tuesday.

Monga was given the honour of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters at the Residence of France for her contribution to world cinema through her Indo-French productions and “her relentless work towards women empowerment,” a statement read.

Through her production company, Sikhya Entertainment, Monga has spearheaded several acclaimed Indo-French productions including actor Irrfan Khan starrer “The Lunchbox”, filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan’s 2015 drama “Masaan” and “Taj Mahal”.

She recently joined hands with producer Ekta Kapoor and author-director Tahira Kashyap to launch cinema collective – Indian Women Rising.

Monga said as someone who has been a huge admirer of French cinema, receiving the honour was a “special” moment.

The 37-year-old filmmaker said she has constantly strived to champion women’s empowerment through her work. She dedicated the honour to “every girl with a dream.” “Being honoured with the title ‘Chevalier dans I’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres’ is extremely special for me… With my content, I’ve constantly strived to uplift women’s narratives in cinema. I’m grateful for this honour and would like to share it with my co-founders of Indian Women Rising and my entire team at Sikhya entertainment.

“Even though the honour has mine and my family’s name on it, I dedicate this award to every girl with a dream. Continue to dream freely and create fearlessly. The universe is always conspiring in favour of the brave and I stand here as proof of that! May our tribe rise,” the producer said in a statement.

Minister Le Drian said both, India and France, share the same passion for cinema.

“I was proud to congratulate Indian and French women producers for their Indo-French collaborations and for their work towards gender equality in this field. The Embassy of France in India will also play its part, through this agreement with the Collectif 50/50. Gender equality is the foremost priority of France’s foreign policy,” he said.

Monga-backed “The Lunchbox” won Critics Week Viewers Choice Award at the 66th Cannes Film Festival.

Her other film productions were also screened and honoured at the prestigious festival, including Vasan Bala’s “Peddlers”, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap’s “Gangs of Wasseypur”, “Monsoon Shootout” and “Masaan”.

  • ‘Madame Claude’ movie review: Wearisome retelling of the French icon’s rise and fall from grace

‘Madame Claude’ movie review: Wearisome retelling of the French icon’s rise and fall from grace

The biopic falls flat on its face, lacking the gravitas or attention to details necessary in painting a realistic cinematic portrait of this iconic woman

Madame Claude’s notoriety as a brothel keeper for the Parisian elite was at its peak from the swinging 1960s to the mid-70s. The “Lady pimp of the nation” had among her star-studded clientele list, the likes of John F. Kennedy, Marlon Brando and the Shah of Iran. And yet, Sylvie Verheyde’s latest Netflix biopic on her decides to systematically peel away the layers of farcical glamour engulfing her life and persona, to reveal a personality that is in constant conflict with itself.

“I realised very early that most men treat us like whores. I decided to be the queen of the whores. To use our bodies as arms and as armour, to never suffer again..,” says an opening voiceover sequence by Fernande Grudet (Madame Claude’s real name). Soon, the viewers are introduced to her world of shady undertakings, where intelligence on the sexual proclivities of French ministers can be exchanged for immunity against law enforcement and the loyalty of known criminals can be bought for envelopes stuffed with crisp banknotes.

And yet, it is in the inner turmoil brewing inside Madame Claude’s psyche that ends up devouring the world that she so meticulously crafted for herself.

The middle-aged Grudet has a chip on her shoulder. Hailing from a humble background, she uses her profession to navigate through the upper echelons of the French social stratum. However, met with opposition from people envious of her meteoric rise, she assumes a frustrated tone of credulity and despondence, distancing herself from people who support her and enraging those who want to see her fall.

Karole Rocher as Madame Claude is believable, portraying the French icon as an emotionally vulnerable being, grappling hard with intimacy issues while trying to keep her business afloat.

She is complemented by Garance Marrilier’s Sidonie, a daughter of a French diplomat who was raped by her father when she was seven, and eventually turned into a sex worker.

Sidonie’s interactions with Madame Claude make for some of the best moments in this Netflix production, shedding light on the inner workings of an escort service as viewed from a feminine perspective. Roshdy Zem as the notorious French Gangster Jo Attia is the only male character that has sizeable screen time and presence, and shines as the goon who protects defenceless women against wanton acts of violence.

    Madame Claude

    • Director: Sylvie Verheyde
    • Cast: Karole Rocher, Roschdy Zem, Garance Marillie
    • Duration: 1 hour 54 minutes
    • Storyline: In 1960s Paris, brothel keeper Madame Claude’s influence extends beyond the world of sex work — until an affluent young woman threatens to change everything

The soundtrack borrows heavily from the music of the post-war era and fits in magnificently with the lifestyle of Madame Claude’ girls as they go about their business in the fabled nightclub Pastel, serenading their clientele with groomed elegance.

However, the film as a biopic falls flat on its face, lacking the gravitas or attention to details necessary in painting a realistic cinematic portrait of this iconic Frenchwoman. This can be attributed to the dreary sub-plots and lack of effective character development. So much so, that a person not too familiar with the central subject of the film might be left flabbergasted from the get-go.

Madame Claude tries to be too many things at the same time — blending in elements of psychological thriller and film, and noir laced with a fictional version of the central character’s story — the final product becomes a muddled concoction of frivolous introspection into the life of a self-made hustler.

Even the dime-a-dozen lovemaking scenes seem insignificant, exuding a quality of raunchiness, but does little else to enhance the build-up to the story before its unimpressive conclusion.

And apart from the music, not much is inoculated in the production to recreate effectively, the bygone era of the 60s, which was as colourful as it was fraught with tension. Instead what we get is a haphazard depiction of a turbulent time, benefitting from nifty camerawork and good screenwriting, but ultimately harmed by the lackadaisical nature of the central plot.

Thus, for the uninitiated, this might not be a nice cinematic experience to undergo, but people aware of the chain of events as portrayed in the movie can give it a watch, if only to indulge in pointing out the flaws.

Madame Claude is currently streaming on Netflix
