  • NASA’s InSight Mission Finds Martian Equator Is Dry With Little to No Ice

New York, Aug 12: Martian equator contains little or no ice, according to a new analysis of seismic data from NASA’s Mars InSight mission.

The findings, published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, describes the dry conditions in the top 300 metres of the subsurface beneath the landing site near the Martian equator.

“We find that Mars’ crust is weak and porous. The sediments are not well-cemented. And there’s no ice or not much ice filling the pore spaces,” said geophysicist Vashan Wright of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego.

“These findings don’t preclude that there could be grains of ice or small balls of ice that are not cementing other minerals together,” said Wright. “The question is how likely is ice to be present in that form?”

Further, the team found that the red planet may have harboured oceans of water early in its history. Many experts suspected that much of the water became part of the minerals that make up underground cement. See ‘Sun As Never Before’! NASA Plans To Invest $2 Million for New Solar Sail Project.

“If you put water in contact with rocks, you produce a brand-new set of minerals, like clay, so the water’s not a liquid. It’s part of the mineral structure,” said co-author Michael Manga of the University of California Berkeley. “There is some cement, but the rocks are not full of cement.”

“Water may also go into minerals that do not act as cement. But the uncemented subsurface removes one way to preserve a record of life or biological activity,” Wright said.

Cements by their very nature hold rocks and sediments together, protecting them from destructive erosion.

The lack of cemented sediments suggests a water scarcity in the 300 metres below InSight’s landing site near the equator. The below-freezing average temperature at the Mars equator means that conditions would be cold enough to freeze water if it were there.

Many planetary scientists, including Manga, have long suspected that the Martian subsurface would be full of ice. Their suspicions have melted away. Still, big ice sheets and frozen ground ice remain at the Martian poles.

“As scientists, we’re now confronted with the best data, the best observations. And our models predicted that there should still be frozen ground at that latitude with aquifers underneath,” said Manga, professor and chair of Earth and planetary science at UC Berkeley.

The InSight spacecraft landed on Elysium Planitia, a flat, smooth, plain near the Martian equator, in 2018. Its instruments included a seismometer that measures vibrations caused by marsquakes and crashing meteorites.

Scientists want to probe the subsurface because if life exists on Mars, that is where it would be. There is no liquid water on the surface, and subsurface life would be protected from radiation.

Following a sample-return mission, a NASA priority for the next decade is the Mars Life Explorer mission concept. The goal is to drill two metres into the Martian crust at high latitude to search for life where ice, rock, and the atmosphere come together.

  • NASA Finds Novel Ways To Track Climate Change and Groundwater Loss Across Planet

Washington, April 7: Using two space-based studies, NASA has been observing climate change and groundwater loss across the planet.

Its Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) mission, ecosystem and climate researchers can quickly locate their regions of interest and study forest structure and carbon content with greater precision than in the past. GEDI is a high-resolution lidar instrument designed specifically to measure vegetation from the International Space Station (ISS). It rapidly bounces laser pulses off the trees and shrubs below to create detailed 3D maps of forests and land formations.

With its newest data product, GEDI mission provides the first near-global estimate of aboveground forest biomass and the carbon it stores – filling a key gap in climate research. The data enables research into how Earth’s forests are changing, what role they play in mitigating climate change, and the regional and global impacts of planting and cutting down trees. NASA Telescope Lunar Spectral Irradiance Uses Moonlight To Enhance Accuracy of Satellites.

Over the past three years, GEDI has taken billions of laser measurements of vegetation around the globe. That data has been combined with airborne and ground-based lidar surveys to create detailed 3D biomass maps that indicate the total amount of vegetation in a one-square-kilometre area. With those maps, researchers will be able to better estimate the amount of carbon that is stored in forests.

“Resolving the structure of different forest and woodland ecosystems with much more certainty will benefit not only carbon stock estimation, but also our understanding of their ecological condition and the impact of different land management practices,” said John Armston, GEDI’s lead for validation and calibration and an associate research professor at the University of Maryland, in a statement.

Another is a joint project between NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the US Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, which used satellite data to develop a method of monitoring underground water loss – a serious matter for the agriculture industry, TechCrunch reported.

Researchers observed California’s Tulare Basin with the US-European Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and GRACE Follow-On satellites and a European Space Agency (ESA) Sentinel-1 satellite.

The groundwater in the Tulare Basin is pumped to irrigate the state’s Central Valley, a major agricultural centre in the US, and its supply is dwindling. The satellite data provided the team the context to develop a model that monitors the rate and type of water loss underground.

“The method sorts out how much underground water loss comes from aquifers confined in clay, which can be drained so dry that they will not recover, and how much comes from soil that’s not confined in an aquifer, which can be replenished by a few years of normal rains,” NASA wrote in a separate statement.

Even as the space agency looks to return to the moon, NASA has reiterated its commitment to Earth science missions with these studies.

  • Social Media Use Impacts Wellbeing in Teenagers, Finds Study

London, March 28: Girls and boys might be more vulnerable to the negative effects of social media use at different times during their adolescence, according to a UK research on Monday.

In a study involving University of Oxford and Cambridge experts published in ‘Nature Communications’, data shows that girls experience a negative link between social media use and life satisfaction when they are 11-13 years old and boys when they are 14-15 years old. Social Media Platforms Such As Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook Fuelling Eating Disorders in Teens: Study.

Increased social media use also predicts lower life satisfaction at the age of 19 years for both genders. This suggests sensitivity to social media use might be linked to developmental changes, possible changes in the structure of the brain, or to puberty, which occurs later in boys than in girls.

“The link between social media use and mental wellbeing is clearly very complex,” said Dr Amy Orben, from the University of Cambridge, who led the study.

“Changes within our bodies, such as brain development and puberty, and in our social circumstances appear to make us vulnerable at particular times of our lives,” she said.

“I wouldn’t say that there is a specific age group we should all be worried about. We should all be reflecting on our social media use and encouraging those conversations but we need to understand what is driving these changes across the age groups and between genders,” she added.

The expert noted the very large individual differences, which means there may be certain teenagers that benefit from their use of social media whilst at the same time, someone else is harmed.

For both girls and boys, the research revealed that social media use at the age of 19 years was associated with a decrease in life satisfaction. At this age, say the researchers, it is possible social changes – such as leaving home or starting work – may make us vulnerable.

“Currently the amount of time young people spend on social media is a ‘black box’ to scientists and parents alike,” said Professor Andrew Przybylski, Director of Research at the Oxford Internet Institute.

“To improve our science we need better data and to improve parenting around tech we need to start a new conversation. It’s not about social media being good or bad, it’s about what young people are up to, why they are using it, and how they feel about it fits into the greater picture of family life,” he said.

The study notes that social media has fundamentally changed how young people spend time, share information and talk to others. This has led to widespread concern about its potential negative impact. Yet, even after years of research, there is still considerable uncertainty about how social media relates to wellbeing.

The team, therefore, set out to look for a connection between estimated social media use and reported life satisfaction and found key periods of adolescence where social media use was associated with a subsequent decrease in life satisfaction. The researchers also found teens who have lower than average life satisfaction later use more social media.

“With our findings, rather than debating whether or not the link exists, we can now focus on the periods of our adolescence where we now know we might be most at risk and use this as a springboard to explore some of the really interesting questions,” adds Dr Orben.

The team, including psychologists, neuroscientists and modellers, analysed two UK datasets comprising some 84,000 individuals between the ages of 10 and 80 years old. These included longitudinal data – that is, data that tracks individuals over a period of time – on 17,400 young people aged 10-21 years old.

The team also included researchers from the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour. They point out that, while their findings show at a population level that there is a link between social media use and poorer wellbeing, it is not yet possible to predict which individuals are most at risk.

  • Study Finds Problematic Smartphone Use During COVID-19 Pandemic

Washington, December 24: A new research has identified links between problematic smartphone use and low sense of control, repetitive thinking, and fear of missing out (FOMO) during the COVID-19 pandemic in the spring of 2021.

The study has been published in the ‘PLOS ONE Journal’. Also Read | Bihar Shocker: Witness in Twin Murder Case Shot Dead in Broad Daylight Outside Gaya Court.

Julia Brailovskaia of Ruhr-Universitat Bochum, Germany, and colleagues presented these findings. Also Read | Apple Days Sale: iPhone 13 Now Available From Rs 61,900; AirPods Pro at Rs 17,990.

Previous research had shown that, during the COVID-19 pandemic, smartphone use had significantly increased. While smartphones can enhance daily routines and social connections, the use of smartphones can become problematic and negatively affect relationships, work, and mental or physical health. A better understanding of factors that may contribute to problematic smartphone use could help inform efforts to prevent and manage such behaviour.

To provide new insights, Brailovskaia and colleagues conducted an online survey of 516 smartphone users aged 18 and over in Germany in April and May of 2021. The survey included questions to evaluate self-reported smartphone use as well as a sense of control, fear of missing out, and repetitive negative thinking–three factors that the researchers hypothesized could contribute to problematic smartphone use, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Statistical analysis of the survey results found that low sense of control, fear of missing out, and repetitive negative thinking were, indeed, all associated with greater severity of problematic smartphone use.

While the findings do not prove causation, the statistical analysis also suggested possible interactions between the four factors. For one, fear of missing out may be a key mechanism by which a low sense of control could lead to problematic smartphone use. Meanwhile, a higher degree of repetitive negative thinking was associated with a stronger relationship between fear of missing out and problematic smartphone use.

The sample was comprised of mostly female and rather young participants; the authors suggested that the study should be replicated in more age and gender-balanced samples from other countries, to ensure the results are generalizable to other populations. Furthermore, the study was conducted during the pandemic when participants’ usual daily routines may have been disrupted, possibly affecting the participants’ sense of control. Nonetheless, the findings are in line with the hypothesis that loss of control–as experienced by some during the pandemic–could boost the risk of problematic smartphone use.

On the basis of their findings and prior studies, the researchers proposed that physical activity and mindfulness practices could help reduce problematic smartphone use.

The authors added, “Problematic smartphone use is fostered by the interaction of loss of control, fear of missing out and repetitive negative thinking.”
