Elon Musk Releases Internal ‘Twitter Files’ Detailing Censorship and Suppression of Information at Twitter

Washington, December 3: Twitter CEO Elon Musk released the internal ‘Twitter Files’ on Friday that showed the company responded to a request “from the Biden team” during the 2020 election — shortly after the company cracked down on Hunter Biden, son of US President Joe Biden’s laptop story.

Musk tweeted a link to the account of independent journalist and author Matt Taibbi, who began posting a series of tweets revealing the inner story about the decision behind the censorship of Hunter Biden’s laptop story. “The Twitter Files, Part One: How and Why Twitter Blocked the Hunter Biden Laptop Story,” Taibbi tweeted. Elon Musk Says ‘Apple Stopped Advertising on Twitter’ After Accusing Company of Threatening To Block Microblogging Platform From App Store.

    Check Tweet by Elon Musk:

“On October 14, 2020, the New York Post published BIDEN SECRET EMAILS, an expose based on the contents of Hunter Biden’s abandoned laptop,” he continued. According to Taibbi, the social media company “took extraordinary steps to suppress” The New York Post’s Hunter Biden laptop story, removing links and posting warnings that it may be “unsafe.” “They even blocked its transmission via direct message, a tool hitherto reserved for extreme cases, e.g. child pornography,” he said in a tweet.

The author further said, “Although several sources recalled hearing about a “general” warning from federal law enforcement that summer about possible foreign hacks, there’s no evidence – that I’ve seen – of any government involvement in the laptop story. In fact, that might have been the problem…”

“The decision was made at the highest levels of the company, but without the knowledge of CEO Jack Dorsey, with former head of legal, policy and trust Vijaya Gadde playing a key role,” he added. Elon Musk Shares Slides From Presentation on Twitter 2.0, Video, Longform Tweets and Payments Among Proposed New Initiatives (See Pics).

One of the employees of Twitter called the decision to censor the story “They just freelanced it”, Taibbi further quoted the employee as saying that the hacking was the excuse, but within a few hours, pretty much everyone realized that wasn’t going to hold. But no one had the guts to reverse it.

Sharing the picture on twitter, Taibbi writes in Caption, “You can see the confusion in the following lengthy exchange, which ends up including Gadde and former Trust and safety chief Yoel Roth. Comms official Trenton Kennedy writes, “I’m struggling to understand the policy basis for marking this as unsafe”.

Taibbi also shared a picture on Twitter which termed the NYPost’s Hunter Biden Laptop Article as “PRIVILEGED AND CONFIDENTIAL” and reads, “our teams continue to investigate the origins of the material included in the reporting.”

Trenton Kennedy, a user on Twitter stated, “I’m struggling to understand the policy basis for marking this as unsafe, and I think the best explainability argument for this externally would be that we’re waiting to understand if this story is the result of hacked materials. We’ll face hard questions on this if we don’t have some kind of solid reasoning for marking the link unsafe. Earlier, in 2020, The New York Post revealed that Hunter Biden introduced his father, then-Vice President, to a top executive at a Ukrainian energy firm less than a year before the elder Biden had put pressure on government officials in Ukraine into firing a prosecutor who was investigating the company.

The never-before-revealed meeting is mentioned in a message of appreciation that Vadym Pozharskyi, an adviser to the board of Burisma, allegedly sent Hunter Biden on April 17, 2015, about a year after Hunter joined the Burisma board at a reported salary of up to USD 50,000 a month.

“Dear Hunter, thank you for inviting me to DC and giving an opportunity to meet your father and spent [sic] some time together. It’s really [sic] an honour and pleasure,” the email reads, according to The New York Post.

An earlier email from May 2014 also shows Pozharskyi, reportedly Burisma’s No. 3 exec, asking Hunter for “advice on how you could use your influence” on the company’s behalf. The 51-year-old, who has vowed to turn Twitter into a platform of free speech, had been teasing the release of the internal files for several days.

“The Twitter Files on free speech suppression soon to be published on Twitter itself. The public deserves to know what really happened …” “This is a battle for the future of civilization. If free speech is lost even in America, tyranny is all that lies ahead,” he tweeted Monday after vowing the files would “soon to be published on Twitter itself.”

  • Nadav Lapid Stands by His Remarks on The Kashmir Files, Says He ‘Knows How To Recognise Propaganda Disguised as a Movie’

Nadav Lapid Stands by His Remarks on The Kashmir Files, Says He ‘Knows How To Recognise Propaganda Disguised as a Movie’

Unfazed by the widespread criticism of his comments against the Hindi film The Kashmir Files, Israeli director and IFFI international jury chair Nadav Lapid said he stands by his remarks as he “knows how to recognise propaganda disguised as a movie”. Reacting to the backlash he received for calling The Kashmir Files a “vulgar” and “propaganda” movie, Lapid said making bad films is not a crime, but the Vivek Agnihotri directorial is “crude, manipulative and violent”. The Kashmir Files Controversy: Vivek Agnihotri Says ‘I’ll Stop Making Films’ if Nadav Lapid Can Prove Any Event of the Film ’Is Not Absolute Truth’.

“Making bad films is not a crime, but this is a very crude, manipulative and violent propaganda film,” Lapid said in an interview with Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz. According to the filmmaker, he felt it was his “duty” to speak his mind as the head of the international jury. “The truth is that I also couldn’t help but imagine a similar situation that might happen one day soon in Israel, and I would be happy that in such a situation the head of a foreign jury would be willing to say things as he sees them.”

“In a way, I felt it was my duty to the place that invited me,” he said. The award-winning filmmaker had called out The Kashmir Files, which was screened at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) on November 22 under the Indian Panorama section, at the closing ceremony of the nine-day festival in Goa on Monday. The team of The Kashmir Files, including writer-director Agnihotri, stars Anupam Kher and Pallavi Joshi, several BJP leaders including Goa CM Pramod Sawant as well as Israel’s Ambassador to India Naor Gilon and Consul General to Midwest India Kobbi Shoshani panned Lapid.

Sudipto Sen, one of the members on the jury, said remarks expressed by the Israeli filmmaker were his “personal opinion”. Lapid, known for his anti-establishment views, alleged that The Kashmir Files was “pushed into the official competition” of the festival. “We learned that the film was pushed into the official competition of the festival due to political pressure… I feel as a foreigner who arrives there, you have an obligation to say the things that the people who live there may have a harder time saying.”

“In such contexts I don’t believe in secrets and whispers. If you stand on stage and are asked to speak, what will you talk about? Only about the beaches you saw and the food you ate?” the filmmaker said. The Kashmir Files had received both bouquets and brickbats for its portrayal of the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits during militancy in the early 1990s upon its March 11 release. It is one of the biggest Hindi commercial successes of 2022. IFFI 2022: Jury Head Nadav Lapid Calls The Kashmir Files ‘A Propaganda, Vulgar Movie’; Says Vivek Agnihotri’s Film Was Inappropriate for a Prestigious Film Festival.

When asked if he had in-depth knowledge of the Kashmir conflict to draw such conclusions, Lapid accepted he “of course did not know enough”. He, however, defended himself saying “you can also watch films by Leni Riefenstahl (a German filmmaker who glorified the Nazi Party) and know what you’re seeing, without being a great expert on that period. There are cases that are nuanced, but this is not the case.”

“In a way, ‘The Kashmir Files’ makes life easy because it is so bare and aggressive, that it doesn’t even mask itself intelligently,” said the Paris-based director. On the criticism he has received from Israel diplomats in India, Lapid said his comments were “political” but not representative of his country. Amid the social media backlash and on-ground protests by Kashmiri Pandits in Jammu, the acclaimed director found support in Congress leader Supriya Shrinate, Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, and actor Swara Bhasker.

He claimed he has received hundreds of emails and messages from cine personalities from India “who are happy about it” and for them “finally things were said that they believed in”. “Since this is a film that the Indian government encourages, I assume that the government there is not happy about it. But is a country only about its government? “I assume not. What I said is not comfortable for the Government of India, nor for the government in the making in Israel, which the ambassador there represents,” Lapid asserted.

There was also condemnation by fellow Israeli filmmakers Dan Wolman and Lior Raz. While Wolman straight out asked Lapid to apologise for his remarks, Raz of “Fauda” fame said one mustn’t comment on issues they have little knowledge of. Asked if he would change anything in the way he expressed his opinion that led to the uproar, Lapid said he was invited to the festival as a director and he talked about a film’s subject.

“I did not come to express one position or another on the conflict in Kashmir…” he said. In another interview to Israel’s news website Ynet, Lapid said at the IFFI stage India’s Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting Anurag Thakur and Israel’s ambassador discussed “fighting a similar enemy and are in a bad neighbourhood”. In response to Lapid’s claims, ambassador Gilon on Tuesday shared an open letter on Twitter calling out the filmmaker for misquoting him.

“I understand your need in retrospect to ‘justify’ your behaviour but I can’t understand why you told (Israeli) Ynet news afterwards that the minister and I said on stage that there is similarity between our countries because ‘we fight a similar enemy and reside in a bad neighbourhood’,” Gilon said. “We did speak about the similarities and closeness between our countries. The minister spoke about his visits to Israel, it being a Hi-Tech nation and the potential of combining this with the film industry.”

“I spoke about the fact that we grew up watching Indian films,” the envoy added. In the interview to Ynet, Lapid also said he shared his views at the closing ceremony with a lot of “discomfort and apprehension. I knew that this was an event that is terribly connected to the country, and everyone stands there and praises the government.”

“It is not an easy position, because you are a guest. “I am the president of the jury here, you are treated very nicely. And then you come and attack the festival. There was apprehension, and there was discomfort,” he said. In countries that are increasingly losing the ability to speak the truth, “someone needs to speak up”, he said. “When I saw this movie, I couldn’t help but imagine its Israeli equivalent, which doesn’t exist but could definitely exist. So I felt I had to, because I come from a place that is itself not reformed, and is itself headed this way,” Lapid added.

The Kashmir Files Controversy: Vivek Agnihotri Says ‘I’ll Stop Making Films’ if Nadav Lapid Can Prove Any Event of the Film ’Is Not Absolute Truth’

The Kashmir Files director Vivek Agnihotri on Tuesday said he will quit filmmaking if intellectuals, including Israeli filmmaker Nadav Lapid, are able to prove that events depicted in his film are false. A day after Lapid, who served as the chairperson of IFFI’s international jury termed The Kashmir Files “vulgar and propaganda”, Agnihotri challenged his detractors saying he will “keep fighting”. The Kashmir Files Controversy: Vivek Agnihotri and Anupam Kher React to IFFI Jury Head Nadav Lapid’s Comments on Their Film.

“I challenge the world’s intellectuals and ‘urban Naxals’ as well as the great filmmaker who came from Israel if they can prove that any shot, dialogue or event of ‘The Kashmir Files’ is not absolute truth, I’ll stop making films. I’m not someone who will back down. Issue as many fatwas as you want, but I’ll keep fighting,” the Indian filmmaker said in a video statement shared on his official Twitter page.

Comments made by Lapid, viewed as an anti-establishment voice, came at the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa on Monday. On Tuesday morning, Agnihotri in a cryptic social media post had said “truth is the most dangerous thing” as it can make people lie. In his video, posted in the evening, the filmmaker said being attacked by “gangs” that want to divide India was not a new phenomenon for him.

“Such things are often said by terrorist organisations, urban naxals and the ‘tukde-tukde’ gang who wants to divide the country. What’s surprising is that how an event organised by the government of India was used to support the narrative of terrorists who want Kashmir’s separation from India and how many Indians living in India used it against the country?” asked Agnihotri. The director, who won the National Film Award for best screenplay – dialogues for 2019’s “The Tashkent Files”, said 700 people were interviewed as part of the research for “The Kashmir Files” .

“Were these 700 people whose families were butchered and gangraped were spouting propaganda and vulgarities? The place that used to be a Hindu-land (Hindu majority), no Hindus live there. Even today, Hindus are marked for murder and killed in front of your eyes. Yasin Malik, who confessed to his crimes, is rotting in jail today. Is this propaganda or a vulgar thing?” he said. Written and directed by Agnihotri and produced by Zee Studios, The Kashmir Files portrays the exodus of Kashmiri Hindus from Kashmir following the killings of people from the community by Pakistan-backed terrorists.

The much discussed film, which opened to polarising reviews following its March 11 release, starred Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi, Mithun Chakraborty and Darshan Kumar. In an Instagram post, Joshi described Lapid as a genocide denier. It was unfortunate that a creative platform like IFFI was used for a political agenda “to preserve an old, false and jaded narrative about Kashmir”, the actor, who is married to Agnihotri, said.

“For decades the international community remained silent on the sufferings of the Kashmiri Pandit Community. After 3 decades, the Indian film industry finally realised that it needs to tell India’s story truthfully and objectively.

“… It is very unfortunate that a creative platform was used for a political agenda to preserve an old, false and jaded narrative about Kashmir.” Arvind Kejriwal Says Vivek Agnihotri Should Upload The Kashmir Files On YouTube Over BJP’s Demand For Tax-Free Status.

We are overwhelmed by the way people of India rose to defend The Kashmir Files against the rude and vulgar statements of a genocide denier,” wrote Joshi. “The Kashmir Files” remains a people’s film, she said as she expressed gratitude towards Israel Ambassador to India Naor Gilon and Consul General to Midwest India Kobbi Shoshani for their support. Earlier in the day, Kher called Lapid a “person who himself is vulgar and an opportunist”.

“If he himself does not like a film, you are most welcome to say it. But if you are a jury member, you cannot use words like ‘vulgar’, ‘propaganda’. The world has identified with the film, the pain and problems of Kashmiri Pandits which have been going on for the last 32 years,” the veteran actor said at a joint press conference with Shoshani.

Kher also brought in the “toolkit gang”, a reference to a Google document backing the farmers’ agitation of 2021 shared by environmental activist Greta Thunberg. The term came to be identified with anti-establishment voices. “All these people belong to the ‘toolkit gang’. He gave a 30 second speech and it went viral,” he said, adding it was a planned move.

The Kashmir Files Controversy: Vivek Agnihotri and Anupam Kher React to IFFI Jury Head Nadav Lapid’s Comments on Their Film

A day after Israeli filmmaker Nadav Lapid termed his film a “propaganda”, “The Kashmir Files” director Vivek Agnihotri in a cryptic social media post said truth is the most dangerous thing as it can make people lie. Agnihotri’s reaction comes after veteran actor Anupam Kher, who starred in The Kashmir Files, on Tuesday said truth will always trump falsehood. Lapid had termed The Kashmir Files as “propaganda movie” and “vulgar” at the closing ceremony of the 53rd International Film Festival of India (IFFI) on Monday night in Goa. Vivek Agnihotri Tweets ‘Truth is the Most Dangerous Thing’ After IFFI 2022 Jury Head Nadav Lapid Calls The Kashmir Files ‘Vulgar’ and ‘Propaganda Film’.

He had served as the chairperson of the international competition jury at the IFFI. “GM. Truth is the most dangerous thing. It can make people lie. #CreativeConsciousness,” Agnihotri wrote on Twitter. Written and directed by Agnihotri and produced by Zee Studios, The Kashmir Files depicts the exodus of Kashmiri Hindus from Kashmir following the killings of people from the community by Pakistan-backed terrorists.

Following its March 11 release, the film was called out for its problematic politics by a section of critics and authors, but it performed exceptionally well at the box office by minting over Rs 330 crore. The movie had also sparked a debate among political parties after several BJP-ruled states, including Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, gave it exemption from entertainment tax.

Kher too took to Twitter to share a series of stills from legendary American filmmaker Steven Spielberg’s acclaimed Holocaust drama Schindler’s List along with a picture from The Kashmir Files. Schindler’s List is the 1993 film which revolved around Oskar Schindler, a German industrialist who saved more than a thousand mostly Polish-Jewish refugees from the Holocaust by employing them in his factories during World War II.

“No matter how big the lie is, it’s always smaller than the truth in comparison,” the actor, who had attended the special screening of the film at the 53rd IFFI on November 22, wrote. Also starring Darshan Kumar, Mithun Chakraborty and Pallavi Joshi, the film was showcased as part of the Indian Panorama Section at the IFFI. In his speech at the closing ceremony of the 2022 edition of the film festival, Lapid said he was “disturbed and shocked” to see “The Kashmir Files” being screened at the festival. The event had Kher and Bollywood star Akshay Kumar in attendance.

Lapid’s comments on the movie, one of the most talked about films of the year, sparked a controversy on social media with reactions pouring from various quarters. Indian film director Sudipto Sen, who was part of the international film jury, distanced himself and other members from Lapid’s statement. “Whatever has been said by IFFI 2022 Jury Chairman Mr Nadav Lapid about the film Kashmir Files, from the stage of closing ceremony of 53rd IFFI was completely his personal opinion,” Sen wrote in a note shared on Twitter. IFFI 2022: Jury Head Nadav Lapid Calls The Kashmir Files ‘A Propaganda, Vulgar Movie’; Says Vivek Agnihotri’s Film Was Inappropriate for a Prestigious Film Festival.

Sen said he and other jury members Spanish documentary filmmaker Javier Angulo Barturen and French film editor Pascale Chavance “never mentioned anything about our likes or dislikes”. Comments by Lapid were made in his “personal capacity”, he stressed. “As juror, we are assigned to judge the technical, aesthetic quality and socio-cultural relevance of a film.”

“We don’t indulge in any kind of political comments on any film and if it is done, it is completely in personal capacity – nothing to do with the esteemed jury board,” Sen added. Hate gets called out, eventually, said Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate. “PM Modi, his govt, BJP, the RW ecosystem feverishly promoted ‘The Kashmir Files’. A movie rejected by International Film Festival Of India. Jury Head Nadav Lapid called it ‘propaganda, vulgar movie – inappropriate for the film festival’,” Shrinate tweeted.

Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi shared a video link of the Israeli filmmaker’s speech where he criticised The Kashmir Files. “A sensitive issue of justice for Kashmiri Pandits was sacrificed at the altar of propaganda. This is a must listen segment at the #IFFIGoa2022,” Chaturvedi said.

Actor Swara Bhasker, known for being unabashedly vocal about her opinions, shared a link to the news story about Lapid’s remarks at the closing ceremony of the film gala. “Apparently it’s pretty clear to the world ..” Bhasker wrote in the caption. Actor-filmmaker Nandita Das simply shared a news report on her Twitter page.

  • Twitter vs Elon Musk: Tesla CEO Files Countersuit in Legal Battle Against the Microblogging Platform

San Francisco, July 30: Tech billionaire Elon Musk has filed a countersuit against Twitter as part of an ongoing legal dispute with the microblogging platform over his abandoned $44 billion takeover deal. However, the lawsuit is not yet accessible to the public and a partially redacted version may be available soon under court rules.

It was not clear why Musk asked the court to keep details of his countersuit confidential when the Tesla and SpaceX CEO had been vocally critical of Twitter on social media and in press interviews in recent months, reports CNBC. Twitter vs Elon Musk: Legal Battle Over Cancellation of $44 Billion Takeover Deal To Start From October 17.

Recently, in a tweet to Musk, a follower wrote that under the SEC Rule 10b-5, Twitter “can be liable for omissions of or misleading material facts. Waiving due diligence does not mean you have to accept a fraudulent disclosure (understated bots)”.

Musk replied: “Exactly.” The tech billionaire terminated the $44 Twitter takeover deal because he did not believe what CEO Parag Agrawal told him about the actual number of bots on the platform.

When Musk threatened to scrap the $44 billion Twitter acquisition deal, the micro-blogging platform revealed that it is suspending more than 1 million spam accounts a day.

Meanwhile, the US judge in the Twitter vs Musk legal battle has set October 17 as the beginning date of the high-profile trial. Judge Kathaleen McCormick in the Delaware Court of Chancery has issued an official schedule, with the high-profile trial starting from October 17-21.

  • Cryptocurrency Lending Platform Celsius Network Files for Bankruptcy

New Delhi, July 14: Cryptocurrency lending company Celsius Network, that recently laid off 150 employees, has now filed for bankruptcy in the US amid extreme market conditions.

The platform said that it initiated voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings to provide it with the opportunity to stabilise its business and consummate a comprehensive restructuring transaction that maximises value for all stakeholders.

Celsius said late on Wednesday that it has $167 million in cash on hand, which will provide ample liquidity to support certain operations during the restructuring process. Sri Lanka Crisis: Central Bank Warns Public on Possible Risks in Cryptocurrency Trade.

The platform, which last month paused all withdrawals, was last valued at $3.25 billion. “Without a pause, the acceleration of withdrawals would have allowed certain customers — those who were first to act — to be paid in full while leaving others behind to wait for Celsius to harvest value from illiquid or longer-term asset deployment activities before they receive a recovery,” said the company. Alex Mashinsky, Co-Founder and CEO, Celsius, said that this is the right decision for its community and company.

“I am confident that when we look back at the history of Celsius, we will see this as a defining moment, where acting with resolve and confidence served the community and strengthened the future of the company,” he said.

  • Uber Files: Leaked Documents Reveal How The Cab Aggregator Broke Laws, Lobbied With Governments To Expand Globally

San Francisco, July 11: A sensational leaked trove of internal Uber documents has revealed the dark side of the ride-hailing platform, that allegedly broke laws and secretly lobbied governments as it planned to expand globally.

According to The Guardian that accessed ‘Uber Files’ with over 1,24,000 documents from 2013 and 2017, the data “shows how Uber tried to shore up support by discreetly courting prime ministers, presidents, billionaires, oligarchs and media barons”.

In addition to memos, presentations, notebooks, and other telling documents, the Uber leak includes “emails, iMessages and WhatsApp exchanges between the Silicon Valley giant’s most senior executives”. The leaked data is from a period when Uber was run by its controversial co-founder Travis Kalanick, and includes more than 83,000 emails, iMessages and WhatsApp messages, “including often frank and unvarnished communications between Kalanick and his top team of executives”. Ola, Uber Get Warning from Govt of Strict Action For Unfair Trade Practices.

Leaked data suggests that Uber executives were at the same time under no illusions about the company’s law-breaking, with one executive joking they had become “pirates” and another conceding: “We’re just fucking illegal,” the report mentioned late on Sunday. In a statement, Uber said that there has been no shortage of reporting on Uber’s mistakes prior to 2017. “Five years ago, those mistakes culminated in one of the most infamous reckonings in the history of corporate America. That reckoning led to an enormous amount of public scrutiny, a number of high-profile lawsuits, multiple government investigations, and the termination of several senior executives,” the company said.

It’s also exactly why Uber hired a new CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, who was tasked with transforming every aspect of how Uber operates. “He was guided from the start by the recommendations of Eric Holder, a former US Attorney General hired by the company to investigate and overhaul our business practices,” said Uber. Khosrowshahi apparently rewrote the company’s values, revamped the leadership team, made safety a top company priority, implemented best-in-class corporate governance, hired an independent board chair, and installed the rigorous controls and compliance necessary to operate as a public company.

“When we say Uber is a different company today, we mean it literally: 90 per cent of current Uber employees joined after Dara became CEO,” the company added. According to the report, Uber executives expressed “barely disguised disdain for other elected officials who were less receptive to the company’s business model”.

When the then US vice-president, Joe Biden was late to a meeting with the company at the World Economic Forum at Davos, Kalanick texted a colleague: “I’ve had my people let him know that every minute late he is, is one less minute he will have with me.” The Guardian led a global investigation into the leaked Uber files, sharing the data with media organisations around the world via the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). “More than 180 journalists at 40 media outlets, including Le Monde, Washington Post and the BBC will in the coming days publish a series of investigative reports about the tech giant,” said the report.

Uber said that “We have not and will not make excuses for past behaviour that is clearly not in line with our present values”. “Instead, we ask the public to judge us by what we’ve done over the last five years and what we will do in the years to come,” it added.
