  • 5G in India: ‘Government Expects 5G Rollout in Early October, To Be Fastest Among Many Geographies’, Says Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

Mumbai, Jul 30: The government expects the rollout of 5G services to start from early October in the country, Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Saturday.

“As soon as the spectrum auction ends, within a few days itself, we will allocate the spectrum. We expect that the 5G roll-out will happen from the beginning of October and within a year or so, we should have a good rollout in the country,” the Union Minister for Communications, Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw told reporters here.Elon Musk Tweets: Tesla CEO Says, ‘Google Co-Founder Sergey Brin’s Wife Nicole Shanahan Should Sue WSJ Over Our False Affair Story’.

The 5G rollout will probably be the fastest compared to many geographies, the minister said on the sidelines of the Telecom Investor roundtable: The Indian 5G Opportunity.

“We believe that we will probably buck the trend of having a much faster rollout of 5G compared to many other geographies since our other costs are significantly under control,” he added.

Bidding for 5G spectrum entered the fifth day on Saturday amid continued interest for radiowaves from players such as Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel.

When asked whether the significant presence of Reliance Jio and Airtel will result in a duopoly, the minister said it will not happen as the reforms have brought in stability in the industry and there is healthy competition.

“Duopoly will not happen, the September reforms have resulted in good stability in the industry, we are looking at new players to enter the segment, and there is going to be good healthy competition in the sector. BSNL will emerge as a good market balancer,” he noted.

The 5G auction is doing well, which shows that the industry is taking off, and the results are very good. Close to Rs 1.49 lakh crore has been committed by the industry for buying spectrum, this shows how the sector is maturing, he added.

The minister also stated that the government is planning to change the entire legal structure that will enable the telecom industry to grow seamlessly.

“We have to make a modern law so that countries the world over emulate our legal structure as a global benchmark, since this is a global industry, not an isolated industry,” he said.

Spectrum as a resource should be utilized in a technology-neutral manner, options such as leasing spectrum, using 4G spectrum for 5G, etc. should all be allowed, these should be reformed so that there is a degree of certainty for the industry, the minister said.

“So, next is changing the entire legal structure, we are still governed by an 1885 law, a 1933 law and a 1950 law, the prime minister has abolished around 1,500 laws, we are going to clean up the telecom legal framework so that there is no disruption to the industry,” he said.

“We will create a legal structure for the telecom sector, we invite your suggestions, read the consultation paper uploaded, the target should be to take it up in next year’s Monsoon session. So by August of 2023, we hope to have a new legal structure,” he added.

On the Production Linked Incentive Scheme, Vaishnaw said the telecom sector fetched a very good response, close to 31 companies got permission under PLI, and close to a lakh crore incremental production is going on under the scheme.

“Over the next 2-3 years, we hope to achieve similar success in telecom equipment manufacturing, like our success in electronics manufacturing, we hope that many of these firms will become exporters and make their mark in the world,” he added.

  • Xbox Gaming Craze Declines, Microsoft Reportedly Expects Decline in Revenue

New Delhi: The craze for gaming on Xbox consoles is diminishing as Microsoft now expects revenue to decline in the low to mid-single digits, driven by declines in first-party gaming content on Xbox. In its June quarter, gaming revenue declined 7 per cent and 5 per cent in constant currency, in line with expectations. Microsoft Introduces ‘Viva Engage’ App in Teams for Organisations.

“Xbox hardware revenue declined 11 per cent and 8 per cent in constant currency,” informed Amy Hood, Executive Vice President and CFO at Microsoft. “Xbox content and services revenue declined 6 per cent and 4 per cent in constant currency, driven by lower engagement hours and monetisation in third-party and first-party content, partially offset by growth in Xbox Game Pass subscriptions,” Hood told analyst during the quarterly earnings call late on Tuesday.

Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella said that with Xbox Cloud Gaming, the company is bringing games to new endpoints.

“Players now can stream Xbox games on Samsung Smart TVs. And we partnered with Epic Games to make Fortnite available for free via the browser. Over four million people have streamed the game to date, including over one million who were new to our ecosystem,” he informed. “We sold more consoles live to date than any previous generation of Xbox and have been the market leader in North America for three quarters in a row amongst next-gen consoles,” Nadella added.

Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass subscription service includes access to hundreds of games, and Xbox Series S is the most affordable next-generation console.

  • Tesla CEO Elon Musk Expects at Least ‘Temporary Relief’ For Electric Vehicles in India in Terms of Import Duty Relaxation

Tesla CEO Elon Musk Expects at Least ‘Temporary Relief’ For Electric Vehicles in India in Terms of Import Duty Relaxation

New Delhi, Jul 24: American electric vehicle maker Tesla may set up manufacturing unit in India if it first succeeds with imported vehicles in the country, according to company CEO Elon Musk.

He, however, said at present import duties in India are “the highest in the world” and is hoping for “at least a temporary tariff relief for electric vehicles”.

Interacting on twitter with followers who asked him to launch Tesla cars in India Musk said, “We want to do so, but import duties are the highest in the world by far of any large country!” India Will Become the Top Electric Vehicle (EV) Manufacturing Hub, Says Nitin Gadkari.

Currently, India imposes 100 per cent import duty on fully imported cars with CIF (Cost, Insurance and Freight) value more than USD 40,000 and 60 per cent on those costing less than the amount.

Musk further said, “Clean energy vehicles are treated the same as diesel or petrol, which does not seem entirely consistent with the climate goals of India.”

He, however, said, “We are hopeful that there will be at least a temporary tariff relief for electric vehicles. That would be much appreciated.”

Asked by a follower if Tesla could start with local assembly in India, Musk said, “If Tesla is able to succeed with imported vehicles, then a factory in India is quite likely.”

A senior government official on Friday had said Tesla had asked for reduction in import duty.

Recently, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari had said Tesla has a golden opportunity to set up its manufacturing facility in India given the country’s thrust on e-vehicles.

Tesla is already sourcing various auto components from Indian automakers and setting up base here would be economically viable for it, the road transport and highways minister had said.

In February this year, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa had claimed that Tesla would set up its manufacturing unit in the state.

The company has registered Tesla India Motors and Energy Pvt Ltd with Registrar of Companies, Bengaluru.

  • Gaming PCs, Monitors Market in Asia-Pacific Hits Record 21.7M Units; IDC Expects Gaming PC and Monitor Shipments to Grow by 15% in 2021

Gaming PCs, Monitors Market in Asia-Pacific Hits Record 21.7M Units; IDC Expects Gaming PC and Monitor Shipments to Grow by 15% in 2021

New Delhi, June 7: The gaming PC market (desktops and notebooks) and monitor market in the Asia-Pacific region (excluding Japan) posted a record 12.3 per cent year-over-year (YoY) growth in 2020, reaching 21.7 million units, according to a new report.

The pandemic caused lockdown in all markets in the Asia/Pacific excluding Japan (APeJ) region throughout 2020, and it had helped to create opportunities for many consumer technologies, especially gaming-related devices (PCs and Monitors), according to IDC’s ‘Worldwide Quarterly Gaming Devices Tracker’.  COVID-19 Lockdown Fueling India’s ESports or E-Gaming Industry

The gaming PC market grew by 4.9 per cent compared to 2019, and gaming notebooks were the key product that contributed to the growth.

Gaming notebook shipments grew by 16.1 per cent and reached 9.7 million units in 2020.

Desktops, on the other hand, recorded a 6.6 per cent.

“With many consumers being stuck at home for a large portion of 2020, gaming became one of the main sources of entertainment – this had helped to drive up demand for gaming devices,” said Yexi Liao, market analyst for gaming and virtual/augmented reality research at IDC Asia/Pacific.

“However, supply constraints on LCD panels, integrated circuits, and graphics processing units (GPUs) meant that PC supplies were incapable of keeping up with the high demand,” Liao said in a statement.

The gaming monitor market grew by 52.6 per cent (YoY) in 2020.

While gaming monitors with a 144 Hz refresh rate were still the main shipment contributor in the region, gaming monitors with a 165 Hz refresh rate grew significantly with YOY growth of 400.6 per cent, as gamers continued to upgrade their appetite for higher refresh rate monitors.

“While all markets in the region experienced YoY growth, the markets with the highest growth in 2020 were Malaysia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Australia, and India,” the report showed.

IDC expects gaming PC and monitor shipments to grow by 15 per cent in 2021, as the pandemic lockdown extends for various markets in the region and gaming continues to grow as a main source of entertainment for consumers.

“The supply shortage should ease in 2021 as the global backlog begins to clear and normalisation of device replacement cycles starts to take place for markets where the pandemic situation is better managed,” said Liao.
