Sealed agreement between DMK and Congress on Stalin, Sonia Gandhi’s phone

DMK MP Kanimozhi also played a role in bringing the two sides together, sources in both parties said

A phone call between DMK president MK Stalin and Sonia Gandhi late on Saturday sealed the seat-sharing deal between the DMK and the Congress for the assembly elections, a national party source in Delhi said. DMK MP Kanimozhi also played a role in bringing the two parties together, sources from both parties said.

Congress is not ready to fulfill its demand for 30 seats [it later pitched for 29 seats], Mr. Stalin is revealed to have spoken to Ms. Gandhi over the phone and offered her 25 seats. Mr. Stalin also offered the Rajya Sabha seat to the Congress, although this is not in the official announcement made on Sunday morning.

“The Rajya Sabha seat offer sealed the deal for us. The top leadership of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee was brought in to discuss the issue and everyone agreed that the party should take up the proposal, ”the Congress said.

Sources in both parties said that Ms. Kanimozhi assured her of the necessity of contesting elections together with the Congress in the last four to five days.

With almost all the coalition parties agreeing to the offers made by the DMK to each of them, the Congress found it in a difficult position to go it alone or fight in another coalition – a possibility Saturday evening by the Congress Rajya Sabha MP and Former Union Minister P.W. Chidambaram gave the verdict.

The Congress leader said that after the seat sharing agreement was signed, the two parties would sit together and decide on the constituencies to be allotted to the national party in the next few days.

Tamil Nadu Assembly Election 2021 | Congress ties up with DMK, reaches 25 seats

It will get one seat in Rajya Sabha and will contest in Kanyakumari Lok Sabha by-election.

The DMK and Congress reached a seat-sharing agreement on Saturday night, ending the days of strong posture by the national party and a threat to pull out of the coalition.

The Congress will contest 25 assembly seats and H.C. In the by-election for the Kanniyakumari Lok Sabha seat vacated after the death of Vasantkumar. It will also get a Rajya Sabha seat. In the late night development, party leaders Dinesh Gundu Rao, KS Alagiri and KR Ramasamy met DMK President MK Stalin at his residence.

“We have reached an agreement. We will sign the agreement tomorrow at 10 am, ”Mr. Rao said Hindu After the meeting.

The Congress did not have many options after the DMK refused to accede to its demand for 30 seats. Many in the Congress were talking of being out of the Grand Alliance if the demand was not met. Some leaders even had the option of tying up with actor-politician Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Nidi Maam as a last resort.

With the wall stressed due to lack of strong options, the Congress settled for 25 seats. Mr. Alagiri told reporters after a public meeting that the seat sharing arrangement would be announced soon. Many leaders told Hindu The signing of the deal on Friday evening was likely only on Monday, as DMK’s mega rally in Tiruchi was scheduled for Sunday.

A senior Congress leader credited the ascent to the lack of better options for the party. “What other options do we have? The other options are not great…, ”the leader said.

In the past week, several Congress leaders were insisting on “dignity for the party in alliances and number of seats”. On Friday, a senior leader told Hindu Back-channel talks were taking place between the two sides.

A source in New Delhi said that the central leadership was sent to the state unit to curb the seat-sharing exercise, though it was given a free hand. The central leadership felt that winning a greater number of allocated seats was more important than contesting more seats.

Tamil Nadu Assembly Election 2021 | AIADMK gave 20 seats to BJP

In a late-night development, the ruling AIADMK signed a deal with the BJP, allocating it to 20 assembly seats and the Kanniyakumari Lok Sabha (by-election) seat for the April 6 election.

Earlier in the day, DMK sealed an agreement for six seats with CPI, the fourth affiliate to sign the seat-sharing agreement.

Congress MP H.K. The post of Kanniyakumari was vacant due to the death of Vasanthakumar.

    O. on the seat-sharing agreement in the ruling camp. Of Panneerselvam, Coordinator, and Edappadi. Based on an agreement reached between AIADMK and BJP today [Friday]The statement said that it has been decided to allot 20 seats to the BJP under the AIADMK-led coalition.

The announcement came after several rounds of talks between the two parties when Home Minister Amit Shah held talks with the top two leaders of the AIADMK following his visit to Puducherry on Sunday.

In another development, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, his deputy o. Panneerselvam and four others were included in the AIADMK’s first list for the assembly elections released on Friday.

Mr. Palaniswami is trying his luck again from his home constituency, Edappadi. He was elected from the seat in 1989, 1991, 2011 and 2016. Mr. Panneerselvam has been nominated from Bodinayakanur from where he was elected in 2011 and 2016. On two other occasions, he represented Periyakulam.

  • TN Assembly Elections: Analysis | A litmus test for AIADMK and DMK

TN Assembly Elections: Analysis | A litmus test for AIADMK and DMK

Tamil Nadu, known for its Dravidian monopoly, is now facing a new round of intense fighting between All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in the absence of its veterans, Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi respectively. And a new dimension in this election is the aggressive attempt by the BJP to make inroads into the politics of the state.

There are also players like Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Neidi Maam (MNM), TTV Dhinakaran’s Amma Makkal Munetra Kadagam (AMMK) and Seeman’s name Tamilar Katchi (NTK). However, structures other than the leadership of both major parties are likely to occupy a portion of the available space.

In the 2016 assembly elections, Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), six-party Makkal Nala Kutani (People’s Welfare Front), BJP and NTK, which contested on their own, together garnered 15.3% of the votes. Along with VK Sasikala, AMMK leader Mr. Dhinakaran’s aunt and Jayalalithaa’s former aide, to break away from active politics, the three-year-old AMMK, which secured a vote share of 5.25% in the 2019 Lok Sabha election. Got a shock.

    major component

Unlike 2016, AIADMK is contesting as a key component of a multi-party coalition. Five years ago, Chief Minister and AIADMK General Secretary Jayalalithaa made it a gamble to go it alone, even though she had allotted a seat to each of the seven parties contesting on her party’s election symbol.

After her death in December 2016, the AIADMK turned to the BJP, with Jayalalithaa maintaining a respectable distance between 2014 and 2016. Two parties participated, including PMK and Desia Murmupuk Dravid Kachi (DMDK) among others. The 2019 Lok Sabha elections met simultaneously and with disastrous results. The coalition could only bring one seat. The “anti-Modi” factor was cited as a major reason for the defeat.

The structure of the AIADMK-led front can now undergo changes, with the ruling party’s DMDK failing to achieve any tangible results. So far, the seat sharing process has been completed only with respect to the PMK, which has been allocated 23 seats. Although the seat sharing arrangement with the BJP has not yet been finalized, the AIADMK is expected to give around 25 seats to the national party, which has in recent months started some programs by its state unit president L Murugan Having gained more visibility. Around Lord Murugan, some sections of the society are regarded as Tamil deities.

    Palaniswami launch

There is a serious acceptance among critics of Chief Minister Idapadi Palaniswami that he has used the COVID-19 epidemic to show himself as a competent administrator, even though all the “hard work” has been accomplished by the bureaucracy. Keeping himself as a farmer, he has taken several steps to woo voters in rural areas. The waiver of crop loans, totaling 110 12,110.75 crore taken from cooperatives, was one of the policy announcements made a few weeks before the announcement of election dates.

Despite Mr Palaniswami’s appearances, DMK President MK Stalin is banking on his party’s core vote base, the arithmetic power of the coalition under his leadership and the anti-incumbency against the AIADMK’s 10-year rule. Essentially, these factors played a big role in the 2019 Lok Sabha election when the DMK-led coalition registered a landslide, securing 38 seats with a vote share of around 53.3%.

Mr. Stalin and his colleagues have highlighted the many shortcomings of the Palaniswami government on many areas, including the handling of COVID-19 management. Two tragic incidents in Thoothukudi district over the last few years in which 12 people died in police firing and a father-son duo in custody who were picked up for a lockdown violation; Alleged corruption in several departments, especially in local administration; A sexual abuse incident in Pollachi; And the loss of livelihood opportunities due to the epidemic are some of the issues being flagged by the DMK, who have been accusing the AIADMK of being subordinate to the BJP.

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s visit to the state should help strengthen the DMK’s support base. The two parties have simultaneously faced three assembly elections (2006, 2011 and 2016). Like the AIADMK, the DMK has not completed the seat-sharing exercise with all its allies, including the Congress, but is hopeful to resolve the issues.

It is also to be seen whether this time there will be a “spoiler”, as Makkal Nala Kutani did for the DMK last time.

  • DMK ties up with VCK for six seats

DMK ties up with VCK for six seats

The DMK on Thursday signed an agreement with Viduthalai Chiruthigal Kachi (VCK), in which it was allotted six seats. The deadlock over seat-sharing with the Congress continued, with the DMK not changing its proposal for 18 seats and the national party did not return for talks.

The CPI is likely to sign an agreement with the DMK for six seats on Friday. CPI (M) and MDMK are yet to reach an understanding with the DMK.

VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan said, “Even though the high level committee of our party has expressed dissatisfaction over the allocation of six seats, we have kept in mind the threat posed by the Sanatan Sena. We do not want the secular vote to be divided. Our decision was shaped by the vision and future of Tamil Nadu politics. “VCK will contest on its symbol.

The ruling AIADMK is believed to have decided to leave Vijayakanth’s DMDK on Friday and finalize agreements with the BJP and TMC (Moopanar). An official said that the speech of DMDK Deputy General Secretary LK Sudhish, ridiculing AIADMK, did not go down well with the leadership of the ruling party.

The number of reserved and general constituencies to be allocated to VCK will be decided after discussion with the DMK leadership, Mr. Thirumavalavan said.

Stressing the need for secular parties to stay together in the DMK alliance, he said that the Left parties and the MDMK had the right to take decisions in their own interest.

    ‘This is a war’

“Election is a war to defeat the eternal forces. The BJP targeted Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and conspired to take a reconnaissance in the state and union territory. It is taking advantage of the absence of Jayalalithaa and Kalaignar [M. Karunanidhi]. Even decades later, it has not been able to take root in Tamil Nadu, while it can change governments and form governments on its own in the northeastern states as well, ”said the VCK leader.

Mr Thirumavalavan said it was unclear whether Sasikala’s decision to “withdraw” from politics was in accordance with the need for “peace of mind” or “pressure from the BJP” or “intentions to bring the AIADMK and AMMK together”. .

He said that DMK should not win. This means that he is particular about AIADMK and AMMK coming together. If the AIADMK is strengthened, it means that the BJP is also getting stronger. This land of social justice will not be good for Tamil Nadu.

CPI Secretary of State R. Muthrasan told reporters, “We had a cordial meeting. We will put the proposal for approval at our party meeting. The agreement will be signed tomorrow [Friday]”

When asked about the complexities in the talks, he quipped, “Even at a wedding, it will take some time to talk about a bride and groom.”

The meeting will be held on March 6 in the CPI (M) ‘s Secretariat. General Secretary Sitaram Yechury will be present. He said, ‘We are yet to receive a call to talk to the DMK. There has been no change in DMK’s offer of six seats and this is not acceptable to us.

The second round of talks between DMK and MDMK were inconclusive.

“There has been no change in the offer made by DMK, and this is not acceptable to us. We will inform our leader Vaiko, and as per his instructions, we will hold the next round of talks, ”said Deputy General Secretary Mallai Shth.

He said that the MDMK has a presence from Gummidipondi to Kanniyakumari, and the strength of the seats offered should be matched. “We are working closely with the DMK to fight the threat facing Tamil Nadu. Our aim is to enter the assembly, ”he said.
