  • WhatsApp Update: Meta-Owned App Adding Option To Hide ‘Last Seen’ Status From Specific Contacts

San Francisco, April 17: After rolling out emoji reactions, Meta-owned WhatsApp is reportedly adding the option to hide your ‘Last Seen’ status from specific contacts.

With the latest beta release of its iOS app, WhatsApp has added an option that allows users to limit specific individuals from seeing their “Last Scene” status, according to WABetaInfo.

If you are not familiar with that part of WhatsApp, it is the feature that indicates when someone last checked the app, and it is a way to find out if a contact may have potentially seen your message even if they have read receipts turned off, reports Engadget. WhatsApp To Allow 32 People in Group Voice Call, Larger File Sharing Up to 2GB.

For a while now, WhatsApp has allowed you to limit who sees your status to only your contacts. You can also disable the feature altogether, but you have not had the ability to prevent specific individuals from seeing that information. However, WhatsApp iOS beta version 22.9.0.70 adds a new “My Contacts Except” option under the Last Seen section of the app’s privacy settings. WhatsApp Gets NPCI Nod To Extend Payments Service to 100 Million Indian Users.

According to WABetaInfo, adding an individual to that list also prevents you from seeing their status. The outlet said WhatsApp is also implementing more granular privacy controls for both profile photos and about sections.

With the feature now in beta testing on both Android and iOS, it likely will not be long until it is officially available on WhatsApp, the report said.

  • WhatsApp Reportedly Enabling New Privacy Features To Prevent Unknown Contacts From Checking Your Last Seen & Online Status

Meta-owned WhatsApp is enabling new privacy measures to prevent unknown users from checking your last seen and online status. This piece of information has been released by WABetaInfo on its official website. According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is making it harder for people who you don’t know and have not chatted with from seeing your last seen and online presence on the instant messaging platform. And these privacy measures are effective for all WhatsApp contacts, including business accounts. WhatsApp Rolls Out Payments Background Feature in India, Here’s How To Use It.

As a reminder, WhatsApp already provides users with an option to hide their last seen. But as per WABetaInfo, there are several third-party apps on Google Play Store or App Store that can log the last seen and online status of select contacts. Several users and hackers use these apps to stalk to know when other people were online. To stop such activities, WhatsApp is enabling new privacy features.

WhatsApp will not show up the last seen and the online status if you have never chatted with another WhatsApp account and as those third-party apps don’t have an active history with you, they will not be able to see your last seen and online status. WhatsApp has also promised that the privacy features will not change anything between you and your friends, family and businesses who you know or have previously messaged. It is worth noting that if you are not able to see the last seen of some contacts, it is because they have enabled the ‘My Contacts Except’ feature that is available to some users.

  • WhatsApp Rolls Out New Privacy Feature To Prevent Unknown Contacts From Seeing ‘Last Seen and Online Status’ of the User

New Delhi, December 13: Meta-owned WhatsApp has brought in a new privacy update to prevent unknown contacts to see a user’s last seen and online status. This new feature has been reportedly rolled out for both Android and iOS enabled devices.

As per a report by WABetaInfo, some third party apps from Google Play Store on Android and Apple App Store on iOS can access data from the app to log ‘online’ status time and ‘Last Seen’ time. WhatsApp has now introduced some safeguards to stop such apps from accessing such data. How To Enable Two-Step Authentication on WhatsApp.

“After this latest improvements to protect users, WhatsApp doesn’t show up the last seen and the online status if you have never chatted with another WhatsApp account. Since those third-party apps don’t have an active chat with you, they cannot see when you are online,” WABetaInfo noted.

In addition, WhatsApp is also working on a feature that will enable users to restrict certain information including their ‘Last Seen’ and profile picture from specific contacts.

WhatsApp recently announced that its users will now have the option to turn on disappearing messages by default for all new chats. Meta-owned platform said that it is adding two new durations for disappearing messages: 24 hours and 90 days, as well as the existing option of 7 days.

“When enabled, all new one-on-one chats you or another person start will be set to disappear at your chosen duration, and we’ve added a new option when creating a group chat that lets you turn it on for groups you create,” WhatsApp said in a statement. This new feature is optional and does not change or delete any of your existing chats, the company added.

  • My Verizon App Reportedly Collecting Users’ Location, Browsing History & Contacts

San Francisco: The My Verizon app is reportedly collecting information about users browsing history, location, apps as well as contacts. According to new website Inputmag, ‘Verizon Custom Experience Programme’ is being pitched to users as a way for the company to personalise communications with the users and to also give more relevant product as well as service recommendations. Hackers Reportedly Slip Malware ‘Silver Sparrow’ Into 30,000 Apple Macs.

The programme introduces two different options that appear in the app, Custom Experience and Custom Experience Plus. The Custom Experience option is a stripped-down version of Custom Experience Plus, and as Verizon states in the app, it helps Verizon “personalize” its “communication with you”.

Custom Experience Plus is said to help Verizon provide users with a more “personalized” experience. However, it not only uses information about the websites and apps a user visits on a smartphone but it also uses “device location,” along with “phone numbers to help Verizon “better understand your interests.”

“We do not share information that identifies you outside of Verizon as part of these programmes other than with service providers who work for us. These service providers are required to use the information only for the purposes Verizon defines and not for their own or others’ marketing or advertising purposes,” Verizon claims on its website.

To opt-out of the Custom Experience altogether, one just needs to open My Verizon app, and then click the gear icon in the top-right corner of the screen. Then scroll down and select “Manage privacy settings” beneath the “Preferences” heading.

On the next page one would find toggle off “Custom Experience” and “Custom Experience Plus. To erase the information that Verizon has already collected about through the programme, tap “Custom Experience Settings,” and hit “Reset”.

  • WhatsApp to Soon Allow Users to Choose Video Quality Before Sending It to Contacts

WhatsApp to Soon Allow Users to Choose Video Quality Before Sending It to Contacts

San Francisco, July 3: After announcing an expiring media feature, Facebook-owned WhatsApp might soon allow users to choose what video quality will be uploaded when they send someone a video. The new video upload quality feature was first spotted by WABetaInfo, and while it’s not active yet, their report confirms that it’s in the works. Choosing the video quality before sending is useful as it means that you can pick the right option to either save bandwidth or share the video without heavy compression, XDA Developers reported. WhatsApp Multi-Device Support & Disappearing Mode To Be Introduced Soon.

You can choose the “data saver” mode to send videos so that they’re compressed and don’t use too much data. WhatsApp has already had a data saver option for calls for years, so it’s a bit weird it has taken this long to get an actual option that the user can choose just for videos, the report said. Recently, the company said that it is rolling out a new “View Once” mode for Android beta testers that wipes photos and videos as soon as you view and dismiss them. WhatsApp Reiterates Its Stand On New Privacy Policy Till India Gets Personal Data Protection Law.

The company’s top executives Mark Zuckerberg and Will Cathcart confirmed to WABetaInfo that this feature was coming on WhatsApp very soon. When you send photos and videos using view once, they can only be viewed once and you’re notified when the recipient has opened them.

If you disable read receipts, the recipient will still see if you have opened the photo or video set to view once, but you cannot see when the recipient opens yours.  In groups, you can see when other participants open expiring photos even if you have disabled read receipts.

  • Apple CEO Tim Cook Reportedly Contacts US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Warns of Antitrust Legislation Pitfalls

Apple CEO Tim Cook Reportedly Contacts US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Warns of Antitrust Legislation Pitfalls

San Francisco: Apple CEO Tim Cook has contacted US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other lawmakers in an effort to sway opinion against the ratification of a set of sweeping antitrust bills that aim to rein in Big Tech, the media reported. Citing sources, The New York Times reported that Apple’s chief executive phoned Pelosi and other members of Congress to warn them of potential pitfalls concerning a set of five proposals announced earlier this month. Around 74 Percent of Apple Users Want Another Name for the Upcoming iPhone 13: Report.

According to the report, Cook cautioned that the bills were rushed, would stifle innovation, and would hurt consumers by wreaking havoc on Apple services. He also requested that the Judiciary Committee delay its process of consideration, a funnel through which the legislation must pass before reaching the full House, AppleInsider reported.

With approval in the House, the bills would need to withstand Senate scrutiny before reaching the desk of the President. Pelosi pushed back on Cook’s ask, the report said, pressing him to name specific policy objections on the proposed material. Cook is not the only tech figure to voice opposition to the batch of antitrust laws.

Google’s senior vice president for global affairs Kent Walker has also made calls to lawmakers, while lobbyists and representatives for Amazon and Facebook have issued statements critical of the proposed measures. This week, a group of think tanks and nonprofits, many of which receive backing from Apple, Amazon, Facebook and Google, issued a condemnatory letter to the Judiciary Committee. In it, the groups decry policies they say would result in lasting repercussions for the tech industry, the report said.

“We believe that voters want Congress to fix things that are broken — not break or ban things that they feel are working well,” the letter reads. “We strongly encourage you to reject these proposals,” it added.

The package of bipartisan bills aims to redefine how Big Tech operates and could mean a potential breakup of sector leaders. Issues targeted in the legislation include conflicts of interest, acquisitions, and outsized power enjoyed by top companies like Apple. One bill, for example, would prohibit Apple from selling devices with first-party apps preinstalled. Another provides more funding for enforcement agencies like the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission, the latter of which recently named prominent antitrust scholar Lina Khan as its chair.

  • Average 4.5 contacts per patient in the last week

Average 4.5 contacts per patient in the last week

With the increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the state, the COVID-19 Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) recommends that for every patient, 20 contacts are required to be detected in districts where positivity rates above 1% is.

However, according to data provided by the Karnataka State COVID-19 War Room, not a single contact has been identified in 45.3% of the cases recorded in the previous week. The data also shows that in the last one week, on average, 4.5 contacts have been detected for every patient. For a total of 5,868 patients who tested positive between March 8 and March 14, 12,298 primary contacts and 13,995 secondary contacts were detected.

According to the data, the best contact tracing has been done in Gadag, where for every patient, 50.9% of the contacts have been detected in the previous week. Kodagu and Chamarajanagar are second and third with 29.1% and 24.9%. Data in four districts – Haveri, Koppal, Raichur and Vijayapur show that not a single contact of a patient has been detected.

However, in many of these instances, the local administration detected and isolated the contacts and also sent their samples for testing but they may not have updated it on the app. Munish Moudgil, who is in charge of the State War Room, said that the data contact tracing was as per the entry made on the app, adding that the details should be entered on the app as manual claims cannot be accepted.

Member of TAC, Giridhar R. Babu said that health workers were busy in testing and vaccinations. “In addition, all other health services have resumed. It would not be unreasonable to expect them to contact you at this stage. It is advised that people from other wings of the BBMP be involved in contact tracing. This can be done at the level of urban primary health center and decentralized works in coordination with other departments, ”he said. He said that individuals from other departments need to be mobilized when required by the BBMP.
