Goldman Sachs Layoffs: Global Investment Bank Plans To Sack Hundreds of Employees at Its Consumer Business, Says Report

San Francisco, December 13: Global investment bank Goldman Sachs is reportedly planning to lay off hundreds of employees at its consumer business.

The company’s decision to cut jobs comes after chief executive David Solomon announced plans to curtail “Main Street” banking ambitions, reports The Financial Times. Playtika Layoffs: Israeli Mobile Games Company Sacks Neary 15% of Its Workforce.

According to people familiar with the matter, the banking major is also planning to stop offering personal loans through its Marcus-branded retail banking platform.

The company announced personal loans, especially for debt consolidation, as one of its first consumer products in 2016. Solomon announced in October that Goldman will significantly reduce its retail banking unit after years of losses and rising costs, according to the report. However, its Marcus division will still accept retail deposits, which offer a relatively cheap source of funding for the bank. PharmEasy Layoffs: Indian Healthtech Startup Sacks More Employees Amid Funding Crunch.

The report said that these layoffs will be in addition to the annual cull of underperforming employees that the banking firm typically conducts each year. Moreover, Goldman is also gearing up for a potential recession in 2023.

Solomon said Goldman had “set in motion certain expense mitigation plans, but it will take some time to realise the benefits”. Bloomberg, which earlier reported the potential cuts, said it could affect as many as 400 positions, the report added.

However, Goldman, which employs over 49,000 people worldwide, declined to comment. Earlier this month, Global investment advisory firm Morgan Stanley cut about 2 per cent of its global workforce, or about 1,600 employees, amid the global economic meltdown. The company has about 81,567 employees.

  • Microsoft Layoffs: Tech Giant Announces 200 More Job Cuts, This Time From Consumer R&D Team, Says Report

San Francisco, August 10: Microsoft, which laid off 1 per cent or 1,800 employees in July, has asked around 200 more employees to go, this time from one of its customer-focused R&D projects, the media reported on Wednesday.

According to posts on Microsoft-owned LinkedIn, the recent layoffs have also impacted contracted recruiters across several locations. A Business Insider report first mentioned that the additional job cuts were concentrated in Microsoft’s Modern Life Experiences (MLX) group, which was put together in 2018 with the goal of “winning back consumers”.

“Around 200 employees on the Modern Life Experiences team have been told to find another position at the company within 60 days, or take severance,” the report claimed. Other tech companies that have either laid off employees or slowed hiring in the current economic downturn include Google, Meta, Oracle, Twitter, Nvidia, Snap, Uber, Spotify, Intel and Salesforce, among others.

“Last year we unveiled our first consumer robot, but it certainly will not be our last. This new consumer robotics software development centre will help support our growing consumer robotics division and attract top talent to work on world-class technology products,” said Ken Washington, Vice President, Consumer Robotics, Amazon.

Astro is designed to help customers with a range of tasks like home monitoring and keeping in touch with family. It brings together new advancements in artificial intelligence, computer vision, sensor technology, and voice and edge computing in a package that’s designed to be helpful and convenient.

“India is an innovation hub and having the centre here will help Amazon create better consumer robotics experiences for customers worldwide,” Washington added.

  • Consumer Electronics Giant Panasonic Confirms Data Breach, Probing Cyber Attack: Report

New Delhi: Japanese consumer electronics company Panasonic has confirmed that its network was illegally accessed by a third party on November 11. NHK reported that the attacked servers stored information about Panasonic business partners and the company’s technology. Panasonic, however, said in a statement that as the result of an internal investigation, it was determined that some data on a file server had been accessed during the intrusion.

“After detecting the unauthorised access, the company immediately reported the incident to the relevant authorities and implemented security countermeasures, including steps to prevent external access to the network,” Panasonic added.

In addition to conducting its own investigation, Panasonic said it is currently working with a specialist third-party organisation to investigate the leak and determine if the breach involved customers’ personal information and/or sensitive information related to social infrastructure. The Japanese company had signed a pact with cyber security company McAfee in March to create a security operations centre focused on cyberattacks.

“We cannot predict whether it will affect our business or business performance, but we cannot deny the possibility of a serious incident,” Panasonic told Mainichi publication.
