    39 protesters clash in Srinagar’s Jamia mosque on Friday

    The protests began on 4 March, after Mirwaiz was not freed from house arrest and stopped to offer key prayers in the mosque.

    Police arrested 39 supporters of Hurriyat president Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on March 4 for allegedly protesting and stone pelting at the Jamia Masjid in Srinagar.

    He said, “Stones will not be allowed at any cost. We have arrested 39 people who took action in Srinagar. [on Friday]. Fifteen of them will be booked under PSA [Public Safety Act], ”Said Inspector General of Police (IGP) Vijay Kumar.

    Mirwaiz, who is also a chief cleric, was not exempt from house arrest and barred from offering Namaz in the mosque. Later, a group of youths raising pro-Mirwais and pro-independence slogans clashed with the security forces.

    Militant module busted

    Mr. Kumar described the killing of al-Badr chief Ghani Khwaja as a “major blow to terrorism” in an encounter in North Kashmir on Tuesday.

    “Khwaja was instrumental in recruiting the youth. He said that new militant groups would be obtained in North Kashmir and would help them reach the districts of South Kashmir.

    In another major breakthrough, two modules of the Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Muhammad have been busted and seven new terrorist recruits, including a student, were arrested. “They were planning IED and ‘fidayeen’ [suicide] Attacks in South Kashmir, ”he said.

    The student was “inspired through social media applications”. “A vehicle was also recovered which was to be used to detonate a car bomb,” he said.
