    Google Team Uses AI To Create Next-Gen Chips Faster Than Humans

    New Delhi, June 12: As the world faces acute semiconductor or chip shortage, a team of Google researchers is working on to design next-generation artificial-intelligence (AI) chips, and has created an AI model that allows chip design to be performed by artificial agents with more experience than any human designer. The new AI method utilises past experience to become better and faster at solving new instances of the problem.

    “Our method was used to design the next generation of Google’s artificial intelligence (AI) accelerators, and has the potential to save thousands of hours of human effort for each new generation,” the team wrote in a paper appeared in the scientific journal Nature.

    In about six hours, the model could generate a design that optimises the placement of different components on the chip. To achieve this, the Google team used a dataset of 10,000 chip layouts for a machine-learning model, which was then trained with reinforcement learning.

    “Our RL (reinforcement learning) agent generates chip layouts in just a few hours, whereas human experts can take months,” Anna Goldie, research scientist at Google Brain, who took part in the research, said in a tweet.

    “These superhuman AI-generated layouts were used in Google’s latest AI accelerator (TPU-v5)!” She added.     Chip floor-planning is the engineering task of designing the physical layout of a computer chip. Despite five decades of research, chip floor planning has defied automation, requiring months of intense effort by physical design engineers to produce manufacturable layouts.

    “In under six hours, our method automatically generates chip floor plans that are superior or comparable to those produced by humans in all key metrics, including power consumption, performance and chip area,” according to the Google AI team.

    Computex 2021: Intel Reveals New-Gen i7 & i5 Chips for Laptops, 5G Product for PCs

    New Delhi: Chip giant Intel on Monday announced a pair of new 11th Gen U-series chips, one of which marks the first 5GHz clock speed for thin and light laptops. At the virtual ‘Computex 2021’ tech event, the company also introduced its first 5G product for the next generation of PC experiences, called Intel 5G Solution 5000, following the previously announced collaboration with MediaTek and Fibocom. Intel 3rd-Gen Ice Lake Xeon Scalable Processors Launched in India.

    The two new mobile U-series processors with Intel Iris Xe graphics are called Core i7-1195G7 and Core i5-1155G7. The Core i7-1195G7 is the one that is the most powerful one, achieving 5.0GHz clock speed. The new 11th Gen mobile chips offer four-core and eight-threads configurations.

    “We’ve taken the world’s best processor for thin-and-light Windows laptops and made the experience even better with the addition of our two new 11th Gen Intel Core processors with Intel Iris Xe graphics,” said Chris Walker, Intel corporate vice president and general manager of Mobility Client Platforms. “In addition, we know real-world performance and connectivity are vital to our partners and the people who rely on PCs every day, so we’re continuing that momentum with more platform capabilities and choice in the market with the launch of our first 5G product for PCs: the Intel 5G Solution 5000,” he added.

    The Intel 5G Solution 5000 claims to deliver nearly five-times speed increases over Intel Gigabit Long-Term Evolution (LTE) from anywhere. Acer, ASUS and HP are among the first OEMs expected this year to enable modern connected laptops with the Intel 5G Solution 5000 based on 11th Gen Intel Core U- and H-series processors. The Intel 5G Solution 5000 builds on two recently announced collaborations with ecosystem partners, China Mobile, HP and MediaTek and DoCoMo and HP, to usher a new generation of fully connected PCs, the company said.

    Seoul: Samsung Electronics on Tuesday unveiled new power-controlling chips that minimise overall power consumption while boosting performance of dynamic random-access memory (DRAM). The world’s largest memory chip producer said its three power management integrated circuit (PMIC) products — S2FPD01, S2FPD02, and S2FPC01 — are available for DDR5 DRAM modules. A PMIC is an integrated circuit that receives the main power input and distributes the power to each electronics part with efficiency and stability. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3, Galaxy Z Fold 3 & Galaxy S21 FE Likely To Be Launched in August 2021.

    Unlike previous-generation DDR4 DRAM, DDR5 DRAM adopts PMIC on the same module, which allows stable and quick power supply, reports Yonhap news agency. Samsung said it applied asynchronous based dual phase buck control scheme technology to detect voltage changes in real time. Such a solution also minimises use of multilayer ceramic capacitors, giving more design options for DRAM module makers.

    The South Korean tech titan said S2FPD01 and S2FPD02 are enterprise-use PMICs for data centers made with the 130-nanometer process, while S2FPC01 is a client-use PMIC for personal computers with 90-nanometer node. Samsung first entered the PMIC business in 2010 and has been producing PMICs for various gadgets, including smartphones, computers, gaming consoles and wireless earphones.

    These snags are likely to disappoint consumers who cannot find the vehicle they want and sometimes find themselves settling for lower-end models without many fancy electronic features. And it threatens to leave a big dent in the auto industry, which by some estimates leads to a $ 60 billion loss in sales during the first half of its year.

    Why is the auto industry being hit so hard?

    Stay-at-home orders increased sales of consumer electronics, squeezing auto parts suppliers, who use chips for computers that control gas pedals, transmissions, and touch screens. Chip manufacturers reduce the pressure to reroute factory lines to better serve the consumer-electronics market, which generates more revenue for them than autos.
