  • Anti-Speeding Technology Now Mandatory for New Cars in European Union: Report

London: New cars in the European Union (EU) are now required to come fitted with anti-speeding technology called intelligent speed assistance, or ISA, as part of an EU regulation that went into effect last week. Under the regulation, auto manufacturers must implement one of several ISA tech options that will kick into gear when a driver goes over the speed limit, reports CNET. Malaysia’s Vehicle Sales Fell 11.76% in May Due to Chip Shortage: Report.

The car can alert the driver with a visual warning followed by an acoustic or vibrating warning; the gas pedal can gently push back on the driver’s foot, or the car can automatically reduce speed. The driver can override the latter two functions, the EU said, by pushing slightly harder on the gas pedal, the report said.

“The objective is to protect Europeans against traffic accidents, poor air quality and climate change, empower them with new mobility solutions that match their changing needs, and defend the competitiveness of European industry,” the European Commission was quoted as saying.

Some vehicles already include warnings for speeding, but the driver must manually set them up. The EU regulation requires the tech to work automatically. The nonprofit European Transport Safety Council (ETSC), which advocates for road safety measures in the EU, said it welcomes the new regulation but that the minimum standard of a beeping sound is annoying to drivers and inadequate for safety. Also, ETSC said, cars could gather inaccurate speed information if they are equipped with systems that determine speed limits only by using cameras to analyse signage and lack a digital map of speed limits.

  • Tesla in India: Elon Musk Says ‘No Plant Where Sell of Imported Cars Not Allowed’

Texas, May 28: Hinting that Tesla will not put a manufacturing plant in India the carmaker’s chief executive officer (CEO) Elon Musk said on Friday tweeted that until the company is first allowed to sell and service imported cars in the South Asian country there will be no setting up of the bases.

Responding to an individual on Twitter, who questioned Musk vis-a-vis Tesla’s plans to put up a manufacturing plant in India, the billionaire responded, “Tesla will not put a manufacturing plant in any location where we are not allowed first to sell and service cars.” Tesla in India: Manufacturing Cars in the Country Will Also Benefit Elon Musk, Says Nitin Gadkari.

These comments suggest that the standstill between India and Telsa in regards to setting up the manufacturing plant in the country continues.

Earlier in April, highlighting the conducive environment for automobile manufacturing in India, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said that Elon Musk is welcome to manufacture e-vehicles in India, but in case the Tesla owner desires to build in China and sell here, it cannot be a “good proposition”.

Gadkari made the remarks while speaking at a private event in Delhi answering a question on Tesla’s concerns on “high duties” in India. “It is a very easy alternative; if Elon Musk is ready to manufacture a Tesla in India, there is no problem. We have got all competencies, the vendors are available. We have got all types of technology and because of that, he can reduce the cost,” Gadkari said.

Inviting Tesla to start manufacturing in India, the Union Minister highlighted that India is a huge market, and infrastructure like ports are available to enable exports.

“He is welcome in India. We don’t have any problem, but, suppose, he wants to manufacture in China and sell in India, it cannot be a good proposition for India. Our request to him is, come to India and manufacture here,” Gadkari said.

Citing the tremendous growth in the e-vehicles sector in India over the last few years, Gadkari further said that “my suggestion to Elon Musk is, in India, he will get a good market and Indian market is very huge. It is a win-win situation for both.”

He added that India has all the quality vendors and automobile spare parts that are available in China and that “it can be easier for him to make here in India and sell in India. He will get good profits from that, and good economics is there. I will request him to come to India and start manufacturing here.”

Echoing similar sentiments, the Minister of State for Heavy Industries Krishan Pal Gurjar earlier in February told the Lok Sabha during Question Hour that there cannot be a situation where the market is in India but jobs are created in China.

In 2020, Musk announced plans to open the production of Tesla electric vehicles in India. A subsidiary of Tesla, India Motors And Energy Private Limited was established in Bengaluru in southwest India. Musk said he was ready to build a Tesla factory in India if the country reduces the cost of importing electric vehicles.

Elon Musk, an American entrepreneur and the founder of Tesla, said that the electric vehicle company continues to face “a lot of challenges” with the Indian government regarding the setting up of car production in India.

Earlier in January, a Twitter user posted a tweet asking Musk whether there was any further update on Tesla’s manufacturing launch in India and saying the vehicles “deserve to be in every corner of the world.” “Still working through a lot of challenges with the government, ” Musk answered on Twitter.

  • Elon Musk Has To Manufacture Here To Sell Tesla Cars in India, Says Nitin Gadkari

New Delhi, April 26: Elon Musk, who has just bought Twitter for $44 billion, will have to manufacture his Tesla cars in India, and not China, if he wants to come and sell the vehicles in the country, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said here on Tuesday.

Reiterating that Musk will not get any special treatment when it comes to customs duties, Gadkari said during the ‘Raisina Dialogue 2022’ that if Musk wants to manufacture in China and sell Tesla cars here, “it cannot be a good proposition for India”. Tesla in India: Telangana Minister KTR Invites Elon Musk to Set Shop in India, Check Tweet.

“Our request to him is to come to India and manufacture here. We have no problems. The vendors are available, we offer all kinds of technology and because of that, Musk can reduce the cost.

“India is a huge market and offers good export opportunities too. Musk can export Tesla cars from India,” he added. In February also, Gadkari had said that Musk has to manufacture in India first in order to roll out Tesla cars on the roads.

“Now his (Musk’s) interest is to manufacture the Tesla car in China and make it sell in India. So, if you start here, you are welcome, no problem. But manufacturing in China and selling in India is not a digestible concept to all of us,” he noted. Asked about Tesla’s demand to cut customs duties on electric cars, Gadkari said that the country cannot appease one automobile company.

“India is a huge market. We have all the world’s automobile giants — BMW, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Honda, Hyundai — present here. If we give one benefit to one company, we have to give that benefit to other companies also. That is the practical problem,” he elaborated.

Musk had tweeted that he faced challenges from the government for releasing its products in India. “Tesla isn’t in India yet due to “Challenges with the government”, he posted.

The government has questioned Tesla’s business practices of seeking tax breaks to use the Indian market to sell its products, but not wanting to set up manufacturing facilities in the country which can generate thousands of jobs.
