  • Apple Reportedly Working on Car Crash Detection Tool for iPhone

San Francisco: Tech giant Apple is reportedly working on a new iPhone and Apple Watch feature that detects if you are in a car crash and dials 911 automatically, media reports say. According to The Wall Street Journal, the current plan is to roll out such a feature next year. Apple’s Upcoming Mixed Reality Headset Likely To Support Wi-Fi 6E: Report.

Google’s Personal Safety app on Pixel phones already includes a feature to call for help when it detects car crashes, just like connected car services in modern vehicles do, including GM’s OnStar, Subaru’s Starlink and Fiat Chrysler’s Uconnect.

Many cars on the road today are not equipped with any connectivity features, so getting crash detection on an iPhone too means more drivers can get the help they need in an accident as long as they have one in their pocket or mounted to their dash, reports The Verge.

The rise of unsafe smartphone usage in cars made way for integration systems like CarPlay and Android Auto, the former appearing in nearly 80 per cent of new vehicles in 2020, according to Apple. Building a new crash detection feature into the iPhone alongside CarPlay could bolster Apple’s rumoured “IronHeart” project to connect its phone with car settings in the same way HomeKit controls smart speakers and lighting.

Targeting the annual $2 billion revenue stream that GM brings in with OnStar with the built-in features would be a very Apple thing to do. While Apple’s accident detection hasn’t always worked as intended in the past, the company has had many years to collect data and analytics on willing iOS and watchOS users. It remains to be seen how accurately Apple will be able to detect car crashes, let alone people falling.

  • Elon Musk-Run Electric Car Company Tesla Hits $1 Trillion Market Cap for First Time

San Francisco, October 25: Elon Musk-run electric car company Tesla on Monday hit the $1 trillion market cap for the first time. Tesla becomes the fifth US company to join the $1 trillion club, after Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and Alphabet. Its stock soared to a new record-high after it crossed $950 during the trading — up more than 9 per cent.

The rally came after the US-based rental car company Hertz on Monday said it has ordered 100,000 Tesla vehicles (worth at least $4.2 billion) by the end of 2022 as part of an ambitious plan to electrify its fleet.

The move includes new EV charging infrastructure across the company’s global operations. Beginning in early November, customers will be able to rent a Tesla Model 3 at Hertz airport and neighbourhood locations in US major markets and select cities in Europe. Hertz, Rental Car Company, Orders 1 Lakh Tesla Vehicles for $4.2 Billion.

Hertz also is installing thousands of chargers throughout its location network. Customers who rent a Tesla Model 3 will have access to 3,000 Tesla supercharging stations throughout the US and Europe, the company said. Earlier, Tesla hiked prices for all four of its in-production vehicles.

The base Model 3 and Model Y electric vehicles are each priced $2,000 higher, at $43,990 and $56,990, respectively. In addition, the base Model S and Model X vehicles will each cost $5,000 more, at $94,990 and $104,990, reports electrek.co.

Global EV sales skyrocketed 200 per cent in the last year and will likely continue to grow with commitments from global automakers to increase EV sales. For example, in August, three US automakers pledged to boost EV sales to 40-50 per cent by 2030.
