  • Apple AirTags Help Man Locate & Recover His Stolen Range Rover in Canada: Report

Toronto: Tech giant Apple’s AirTags helped a man locate and recover his stolen Range Rover in Canada, media reports said. According to AppleInsider, the owner of the SUV attached three AirTag trackers that helped him locate the vehicle, which was then recovered by police. Apple Likely To Launch 2nd-Gen AirTag As Shipments Rise: Report.

As per the report, after having his first Range Rover stolen a month ago, he purchased an identical unit to replace the lost vehicle. The first unit was never found, as the thief threw the owner’s wallet and family members’ phone out of the Rover before driving off with it in an apparent attempt to prevent tracking.

“The thieves were able to disable the tracker in my car, put there by the manufacturer,” according to the man, who for safety concerns has been identified only by his first name, Lorne.

These thieves were also able to steal the car despite him having placed his keys into a faraday box, which prevents criminals remotely copying a key fob and mimicking its signal to unlock the car. Consequently, Lorne decided to place three AirTags in this second vehicle. He placed one in the glovebox, one inside the spare tire, and a third under the back seat.

On June 22, this SUV was parked away from the garageand at the very next day, Lorne was woken up by the news that his car was stolen. He was however able to use the Find My app to follow the car to a metal recycling plant in the nearby Scarborough district. Lorne was unable to contact law enforcement after arriving at the plant, which led him to drive to the police station instead.

These devices send the location of your AirTag to iCloud — then you can go to the Find My app and see it on a map. The whole process is anonymous and encrypted to protect your privacy.

  • Canada Bans China’s Huawei, ZTE From 5G Networks

Toronto, May 20: After the US, Canada has now moved to ban Chinese telecommunication giants Huawei and ZTE from its 5G networks in order to ensure the “long term safety of our telecommunications infrastructure”. Following the steps of its partners — including the UK, the US, Australia and New Zealand — Canada decided to ban the two Chinese tech companies by the start of 2028.

The five countries make up an intelligence-sharing arrangement named ‘Five Eyes’. “The government of Canada is ensuring the long term safety of our telecommunications infrastructure. As part of that, the government intends to prohibit the inclusion of Huawei and ZTE products and services in Canada’s telecommunications systems,” Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry Francois-Philippe Champagne said in a statement late on Thursday. Volkswagen in Talks To Acquire Huawei’s Autonomous Driving Unit: Report.

The move will improve Canada’s mobile Internet services and “protect the safety and security of Canadians”. Telecommunications companies that operate in Canada would no longer be permitted to make use of designated equipment or services provided by Huawei and ZTE.

“As well, companies that already use this equipment installed in their networks would be required to cease its use and remove it,” said the minister. Beijing reacted to the Canadian move, saying the security concerns raised by Canada are a “pretext for political manipulation”, accusing Canada of working with the US to suppress Chinese companies. US President Joe Biden in November signed the law to ban Huawei and ZTE from getting approval for network equipment licences in the country.

Earlier, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) designated Huawei and ZTE as national security threats to communications networks — making it harder for the US firms to buy equipment from them. Under the new law, the FCC is required to no longer review or approve any authorisation application for equipment posing a clear risk to national security.

  • Amazon Found Selling Kannada State Flag Bikini Along With State Emblem in Canada, UK, Japan and Mexico

Amazon Found Selling Kannada State Flag Bikini Along With State Emblem in Canada, UK, Japan and Mexico

Bengaluru, June 5: Less than 50 hours after a massive furore against Tech giant Google, e-commerce giant Amazon too got caught up in a controversy as its e-commerce arms in Canada, United Kingdom, Japan and Mexican sites were found selling a Kannada state flag (Yellow and Red) bikini along with the state emblem on Friday.

This incident came to light when the Kannada Rakshna Vedike (KRV) Praveen Shetty camp protested and gave a call to boycott Amazon besides contemplating formally lodging a complaint with the state police.

Shetty, who led the protest, told reporters that the Kannada state flag is the symbol of pride for seven crore Kannadigas and Amazon has made a huge mistake by hurting the sentiments of millions across the world with its insensitive act.

A YouTuber MYNameis Madhu lashing out at the e-commerce giant said that this is the work of Amazon’s country specific sites. “Amazon Canada has shocked the Kannadigas across the globe with their audacity of promoting sale of personalised Kannada flag coloured bikini. This has not just happened in Canada alone, they are selling the same product in the United Kingdom, Japan and Mexico too,” he said. While Twiterrati Outrage Over Google Displaying Kannada as ‘Ugliest Language In India, The search Engine Also Shows It As ‘Queen of Languages In The World’.

The YouTuber added that the same e-commerce giant had stoked controversy in January 2017 by offering a doormat with the Indian flag for sale. “Then our leader Sushma Swaraj, who was the external affairs minister at that time, had dealt with this giant with an iron hand,” he said.

Swaraj had sent out a strongly worded message to Amazon India representatives asking them to tender an apology for disrespecting the national symbol which hurt the sentiments of an entire country besides ordering Amazon to remove all the products insulting the national flag.

Swaraj had taken strong objection to Amazon’s Canada arm selling several offensive products like India flag underwear and panties, Indian emblem thongs and dog t-shirt, Indian flag shoes and flip flops and much more. Explained: Google Kannada ‘Queen Of All Languages’ Controversy; How an Algorithm Glitch Started the ‘Ugliest Language’ Row On Twitter.

Ironically, these items were sold by CafePress apparently co-founded by an India-origin individual, Maheesh Jain.

On Thursday Google came under severe criticism after it produced a search result stating that Kannada was the ugliest language. After a backlash, Google had tendered an unconditional apology.
