  • Display Week 2022: Samsung, LG Showcase Future Foldable Screens in California

    San Francisco, May 11: Display giants Samsung and LG on Wednesday showcased future foldable screens that move from existing single-fold designs to fold twice like a tri-fold wallet, and displays that fold both inwards and outwards.

    At the annual Display Week conference in Califrornia from May 10-12, the South Korean giants showed revolutionary displays including two-way mobile slidables, new foldable displays for gaming, and the most advanced quantum dot display technology for the large display market. Samsung Completes Construction of Display Manufacturing Unit Shifted From China to Uttar Pradesh’s Noida.

    Samsung Display premiered its 12.4-inch slidable display, with a panel that expands the screen horizontally – from both ends. The Flex OLED zone showcased Flex G, which folds inwards twice, and the Flex S, that folds both inward and outward.

    The company’s 6.7-inch slidable product also debuted at Display Week that expands upward, unlike existing mobile sliding displays that stretch horizontally. This capability is advantageous for document work, as well as social media postings, said the company.

    Samsung Display also showcased ‘Gaming Foldable OLED’ display which allows controllers to be attached at both ends, but can also be folded in half. LG Display unveiled a completely new form of foldable OLED technology this year – an 8-inch 360-degree Foldable OLED which freely folds in both inward and outward directions.

    The screen can be folded over 200,000 times without compromising its performance thanks to a stable module structure. It also uses a special folding structure to minimize creasing, providing a comfortable and cutting-edge user experience, said the company.

    LG Display also brought next-generation OLED solutions with a 97-inch OLED.EX TV display, the biggest of its kind, for the first time to the public. The company showcased a 42-inch ‘Bendable OLED Gaming’ display which boasts a curvature range of up to 1,000R, or a radius of 1,000mm.

  • California Passes Bill Targeting Amazon’s Algorithm-Driven Rules

    San Francisco, Sep 11: California has passed a landmark bill aiming at Amazon and the controversial, algorithm-driven rules that govern the lives of its warehouse workers, the media reported.

    The first-of-its-kind law was passed by the state Senate this week and will soon land on the desk of Governor Gavin Newsom, who has not yet signalled whether he will sign it.

    Under the bill, warehouses will be required to disclose to government agencies, and to the employees, the quotas and metrics used to track workers, the Guardian reported on Friday. WhatsApp To Roll Out End-to-End Encrypted Backups for Privacy, Security.

    It would ban penalties for “time off-task”, which discourage workers from using the bathroom or taking other necessary breaks, while also prohibiting retaliation against workers who complain, the report said.

    Though the bill applies to all warehouse jobs in California, its passage has called attention to Amazon, where workers have described brutal conditions under which productivity metrics are key and every move is surveilled.

    Some have even reported having to urinate in bottles on the job to avoid being penalised for taking time to use the bathroom.

    A former Amazon warehouse worker Yesenia Barrera, who now organises with the Warehouse Worker Resource Center, said that workers at the tech behemoth live in fear of being fired for being marked as having too much “time off-task” or working too slowly.

    The law comes as Amazon is increasingly facing pressure to address concerns about its warehouse conditions.

    Frightened Terns Abandon 3000 Eggs After a Rogue Drone Crash-Landed on Nesting Island In California

    Roughly 3000 tern (Seabird) eggs were abandoned after a rogue drone crashed on southern California nesting island and scared off thousands of birds, the New York Times reported this week.

    According to the NYT report, On May 13th, the terrified birds abandoned their nests, after one of the two drones flying illegally over the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, a stretch of protected coastal wetlands in Southern California, crash-landed on the nesting island.

     It’s the time of the year when terns prepare for the eggs to hatch. However, this year there will no hatchlings instead the island is strewn with eggshells.

    According to Environmental scientist and reserve manager Melissa Loebl,  in 20 years the island has not witnessed such a large scale abandonment by the terns. These birds are among 800 species of plants and animals that consider the reserves as habitat.

    Loebl said that the pandemic drove hundreds of thousands of people into the island and this not only contributed to increased drome activity in the area but also saw a large number of dogs and cycles making rounds which is prohibited.

    “It’s residents that sometimes feel entitled, that feel they should be able to use the land as they like,” Molsberry said.

    “We’ve seen a significant increase in dogs, particularly off-leash,” Loebl added. “That’s devastating for wildlife and this is prime nesting season. The dogs chase the birds and the birds abandon their nests.”

     The incident has spurred authorities to ramp up enforcement and cite people who break the rules. The tern is classified as a near-threatened species,
