  • Google Updates Built-In Password Manager for Chrome, Android

Washington, July 1: American tech giant Google has recently announced that it has updated its built-in password manager for Chrome and Android as it attempts to position it as an alternative to standalone services offered by 1Password and Bitwarden.

According to The Verge, the most significant ability will be to manually add passwords to the service, rather than simply relying on Chrome’s offer to save credentials when you use them. Previously, there had been signs of this feature on Chrome on desktop, but now Google has said it’s making it available across “all platforms.” Google Chrome’s Lite Mode on Android To Be Discontinued: Report.

The search giant also said it’s working to unify the design of the password manager between Chrome and Android with “a simplified and unified management experience” and says this includes a feature that will automatically group multiple passwords used on the same site.

On Android, Google says a new ‘Touch-to-Login’ feature will let users enter their credentials via an overlay at the bottom of the screen “to make logging in even quicker.”

Google’s password manager already includes the ability to check for weak and reused passwords (and automatically change them on Android) and autofill saved passwords across apps outside of Chrome on iOS.

As per The Verge, Google has said it will continue to invest in its password manager to support emerging technologies like password-less passkeys (which Apple also intends to bring to Safari).

  • Twitter Reportedly Testing Built-In Notes Feature

San Francisco: Microblogging site Twitter has confirmed that the platform is working on a built-in Notes feature that will allow users to write longer posts. On its own platform, Twitter introduced Notes and said it is testing the new feature for its audience. Twitter Testing New Shopping Feature ‘Product Drops’.

“A small group of writers is helping us test Notes. They can be read on and off Twitter, by people in most countries,” the platform wrote.

According to The Verge, the feature is currently available to a select group of users in the US, UK, Canada, and Ghana. Twitter shared how the feature will work in two separate GIFs. Users can click into the “Write” tab to start writing a Note, and can then embed the Note into their tweet when finished.

Several writers have already published Notes on the platform, which appear as long-form posts that can have tweets, videos, and images mixed in. At the moment, Twitter users have to write long-form content in the form of broken threads which may be jarring for people to read. Apart from writing Twitter threads, users also write long-form content on other apps, make a pdf or a jpg file, and then take a screenshot and post it on Twitter.

  • Twitter Reportedly Working on a Built-In Podcasts Tab

San Francisco: Micro-blogging site Twitter is likely building a tab dedicated to podcasts, as shown in a screenshot posted by reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong. The image shows a microphone icon in the Twitter app’s bottom menu bar, which appears to lead to a page titled “Podcasts”, The Verge reported on Wednesday. Twitter May Soon Let You Untag Yourself From Threads: Report.

The screenshot does not show any indication of how podcasts could be displayed on the platform or if it will somehow incorporate Spaces, the platform’s audio-only chatrooms.

Right now, live Spaces are stuffed at the top of Twitter feeds, and it would make sense to organize them into a separate tab. Twitter began branching out to audio when it first launched Spaces in 2020 and dove even deeper into the medium with its acquisition of social podcast platform Breaker, the report said.

Spaces has been an ongoing project for the platform, which recently started letting anyone create chatrooms and allowing all mobile users to record conversations. Recorded Spaces are already a bit like podcasts, albeit only temporary ones, which only last 30 days. If a Twitter podcast feature is anything like Spotify or Apple Podcasts, users would be able to choose from and listen to podcasts at their leisure, with no rush to catch a live Spaces broadcast or listen to recordings before time runs out.
