  • Bugs in Google Chrome for Desktop, Warns India’s Cyber Agency

New Delhi, August 20: The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has warned users about multiple vulnerabilities in Google Chrome for desktop that can let hackers gain access to their computers. The multiple vulnerabilities could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code and Security restriction bypass on the targeted system, according to an advisory by CERT-In, that comes under IT Ministry.

“These vulnerabilities exist in Google Chrome due to use after free in FedCM, SwiftShader, ANGLE, Blink, Sign-In Flow, Chrome OS Shell; Heap buffer overflow in Downloads, Insufficient validation of untrusted input in Intents, Insufficient policy enforcement in Cookies and Inappropriate implementation in Extensions API,” the cyber agency said.

A hacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by sending specially crafted requests on the targeted system. Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code and Security restriction bypass on the targeted system, said CERT-In. China’s Cyber Watchdog Tries to Assuage Concerns of Internet Firms.

“The vulnerability (CVE-2022-2856) is being exploited in the wild. The users are advised to apply patches urgently,” said the agency. CERT-In also warned about bugs in Apple iOS, iPadOS and macOS and a “remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by enticing a victim to open a specially-crafted file”.

It also found multiple vulnerabilities in Cisco products again, which could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary code, information disclosure and cross site scripting attack on an affected system. The nation’s premier cyber agency had alerted about bugs in Cisco products in the recent past too.

  • Indian Cyber Agency CERT Flags Multiple Bugs in Chrome OS, Mozilla May Put Various Sensitive Data at Risk

New Delhi, June 7: The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has flagged several bugs in Chrome OS and Mozilla products that may put various sensitive data at risk.

In a report, the agency mentioned that the bugs could allow a remote attacker to disclose sensitive information, bypass security restrictions, execute arbitrary code, perform spoofing attacks and cause a denial of service (DoS) attack on the targeted system.

“These vulnerabilities exist in Mozilla Firefox due to SQL injection in the history tab, Cross-Origin resources length leaked, Heap buffer overflow in WebGL, Browser window spoof using full-screen mode…” CERT-In said on its website. A remote attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by convincing a victim to open a specially crafted web request. Google Bans Deepfake-Generating AI from Colab.

“Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow a remote attacker to disclose sensitive information, bypass security restrictions, execute arbitrary code, and cause a denial of service (DoS) attack on the targeted system,” as per CERT-In.

Users can upgrade to Mozilla Firefox iOS 101, Firefox Thunderbird 91.10, Firefox ESR 91.10, and Mozilla Firefox 101 for better security. Meanwhile, in March, the Central government said in the Rajya Sabha that the CERT-In has observed over 14 lakh cyber security incidents during 2021.

  • Iran-Backed Hackers Exploiting Microsoft & Fortinet Bugs; Warns Federal Cyber Agencies

San Francisco: Federal cyber agencies across the US, the UK and Australia have warned that the Iranian government-sponsored hackers are exploiting several vulnerabilities in Microsoft Exchange email server and cyber security company Fortinet to perform malicious activities, which include deploying ransomware. Beware! This WhatsApp Bug Allows Hackers To Steal Information From Your Phone, Here’s How To Avoid.

In an advisory, The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) said that they have highlighted the ongoing malicious cyber activity by an advanced persistent threat (APT) group associated with the government of Iran.

“The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and CISA have observed this Iranian government-sponsored APT exploit Fortinet and Microsoft Exchange ProxyShell vulnerabilities to gain initial access to systems in advance of follow-on operations, which include deploying ransomware,” the CISA said in a statement late on Wednesday.

By breaking into systems through Fortinet vulnerabilities, cybercriminals can “conduct data exfiltration, data encryption, or other malicious activity.”

The CISA, the FBI, the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC), and the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) have released the joint cybersecurity advisory.

“ACSC is also aware this APT group has used the same Microsoft Exchange vulnerability in Australia,” it read.

The Iranian government-sponsored APT group has exploited Fortinet vulnerabilities since at least March 2021 and a Microsoft Exchange ProxyShell vulnerability since at least October 2021. The APT actors are actively targeting a broad range of victims across multiple US critical infrastructure sectors, including the transportation sector and the healthcare and public health sector, as well as Australian organisations.

“These Iranian government-sponsored APT actors can leverage this access for follow-on operations, such as data exfiltration or encryption, ransomware, and extortion,” the advisory read.

In April this year, the FBI and CISA issued warnings about the vulnerabilities in Fortinet gear being actively exploited. Microsoft on Wednesday issued its own warning of six Iranian groups using vulnerabilities in the same pair of products to deploy ransomware
