Fake BigBasket, DMart, Blinkit Websites: Delhi Police Arrest Kingpin for Duping Buyers

New Delhi, November 22: Delhi Police has arrested the kingpin of a gang of cyber cheats, which used to create fake websites of e-commerce platforms including BigBasket, DMart, and Blinkit and post lucrative offers to lure unsuspecting buyers and cheat them by stealing their credit card details, an officer said on Wednesday. The accused was identified as Shahrukh Akhtar, who was arrested from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh.

According to police, a complaint was lodged with the IFSO (Intelligence Fusion & Strategic Operations) unit, Special Cell. The complainant alleged that while browsing Facebook, they encountered an enticing offer on BigBasket. Consequently, they clicked on the “Shop Now” tab and followed the instructions. Subsequently, an amount of Rs. 98,000 was debited from their credit card. Online Fraud: Man Loses Rs 5 Lakhs After Seeking Help From Fake ‘Uber Customer Care Number’ on Google in Gurgaon.

“In the course of the investigation, an extensive effort was made to trace the money trail and digital traces. The analysis of financial transactions and electronic records unveiled a widespread operation spanning multiple states, organised into various tiers,” said the Deputy Commissioner of Police (IFSO) Hemant Tiwari. Financial scrutiny disclosed transactions exceeding Rs 25–30 lakh in the implicated accounts, with more than 15 victims falling prey to the gang.

During the investigation, two individuals — Sonam and Junaid Akhtar — were arrested on October 5. “Sonam revealed that, under Shahrukh Akhtar’s instructions, she tele-called innocent victims from a call centre in Raj Nagar Extension. She used fake mobile numbers, and all the SIM cards and bank accounts (where the defrauded money was deposited) were provided by the ringleader, Shahrukh,” said the DCP.

The other suspect, Junaid Akhtar, disclosed his role in furnishing bank accounts for money collection. He also withdrew cash through ATM cards, depositing it into the personal bank accounts of Shahrukh and his wife.

The pursuit of Shahrukh Akhtar ensued. “After persistent efforts, the team pinpointed Shahrukh’s location and arrested him. Shahrukh emerged as the prime suspect and the mastermind of the entire operation, confessing to his involvement in the crime,” said the DCP.

He acquired fake SIM cards for communication and tele-calling, established fake bank accounts for receiving funds, and purchased domains to operate counterfeit websites under the names of BigBasket, DMart, and Blinkit. 255 Fake Call Centres Racket Busted in Noida for Loan, Insurance, Job Scams in Past Six Years.

“Call centres in Mamura Village and Raj Nagar Extension, UP, were used to manage these activities. Shahrukh received Rs. 30 lakh in cash in his personal bank account over the past year and even bought a Hyundai Venue Car with the ill-gotten gains,” said the DCP. Interrogation of the accused uncovered a multi-tiered racket operating from disparate locations in India:

First Tier: Providing SIM cards and bank accounts with fictitious names and addresses to the accused. Second Tier: Creating counterfeit websites under the names of BigBasket, DMart, and Blinkit and promoting them on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, using specific user IDs.

Third Tier: Offering training and technical expertise for engaging with interested customers. Fourth Tier: Initiating contact with customers based on acquired data, enticing them to deposit money into provided fake accounts.

  • Blinkit To Deliver Printouts at Your Doorsteps in 11 Minutes

New Delhi: Zomato-owned Blinkit on Thursday announced to deliver printouts at your doorsteps in 11 minutes, a move that will be useful for parents and working professionals alike. The 10-minute delivery platform, acquired by Zomato for Rs 4,447 crore (about $568 million) sand the curreny facility is available in some areas now. Grofers Rebrands Itself to Blinkit, Assures 10-Minute Grocery Delivery.

“Have never had a printer at home and getting it from cyber cafe or library or neighbours or offices has always been cumbersome specially when it’s needed at the point of approaching deadlines,” said Jitesh Goel, Product at Blinkit.

“This should be really useful specially at the rates it is available at. You just have to upload the file and we will deliver it to you in minutes. And we will delete the uploaded file after delivery. Do try it out and share your feedback,” he said in a LinkedIn post.

The new service on the platform arrives as Zomato is set to experiment with cross leveraging its customers base for Blinkit and vice versa.

“We will also start working on integrating the delivery fleet back-ends which should drive higher delivery efficiency over time,” Zomato Founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal said recently.

Tech integrations between the two companies will accelerate the pace of progress at both ends, he added. According to the company, the losses for Blinkit are coming down every month — from Rs 2,040 million (about $26 million) in January 2022 to Rs 929 million ($12 million) in July.

The company said that Blinkit has also shut down a number of unviable dark stores, which were not scaling and the team will continue to evaluate non-performing stores. In just six months, the Blinkit business has scaled to 20 per cent of Zomato’s food delivery GOV while being present in less than 15 cities.

  • Zomato Share Falls After It Announces Blinkit Acquisition for Rs 4,447 Crore

New Delhi, June 27: Shares of food aggregator Zomato tumbled sharply on Monday after the company’s Board of Directors approved a proposal to acquire a cash-strapped quick commerce company Blinkit for Rs 4,447 crore.

The proposed acquisition will be an all-stock deal.

Last year, Zomato extended $50 million loans to Grofers India Private Limited, which has now been renamed as Blink Commerce. At 12.14 p.m, the shares of Zomato traded at Rs 65.90, down 6.5 per cent from the previous session. So far in 2022, it had fallen 53 per cent on a cumulative basis. Even though the company reported healthy gains on its listings on the stock exchanges in July last year, it could not capitalize on it further.

“The recently announced acquisition of Blinkit by Zomato Ltd. is expected to add to its woes of high operating losses. The Blinkit is synergistic to Zomato’s food delivery business and the management expects the business to grow significantly in the future. The quick commerce market, however, has become incredibly competitive, and it will take a very long time to figure out the unit economics and turn profitable,” said Punit Patni, Equity Research Analyst, Swastika Investmart on the decline in Zomato shares. Zomato to Acquire Quick Commerce Company Blinkit for Rs 4,447 Crore.

Further, the current market conditions are not conducive for businesses that are growing without showing profits, said Patni, adding that the company is suitable only for investors having a high-risk appetite and a long-term view. The company’s current market capitalisation is worth Rs 52,242 crore, National Stock Exchange data showed.

Given the intense competitive intensity in the quick commerce space, brokerage house JM Financial believes that the path to profitability for Zomato group post the acquisition of Blinkit can get extended by at least a year to FY26 from FY25.

  • Grofers Rebrands Itself to Blinkit, Assures 10-Minute Grocery Delivery

New Delhi: Online grocery delivery firm Grofers has rebranded as Blinkit to indicate its focus on the quick commerce or 10-minute grocery delivery space. The rebranding comes months after the company launched an initiative to deliver groceries in 10 minutes or less. Grofers to Turn Unicorn with Zomato’s $100 Million Investment: Report.

“We learnt a lot as Grofers, and all our learnings, our team, and our infrastructure is being repurposed to pivot to something with staggering product-market fit – quick commerce. Today, we are surging ahead as a new company, and we have a new mission statement – “instant commerce indistinguishable from magic”. And we will no longer be doing this as Grofers – we will be doing it as Blinkit,” Albinder Dhindsa, Co-founder and CEO of Grofers, said in a statement.

Grofers had recently attained unicorn status or $1 billion in valuation, after raising over $120 million from food aggregator Zomato Ltd.

“We need people who can think like founders (and not like employees). If you are reading this, and you want to join a company which will trust you and empower you to change the world in 10 minutes,” Dhindsa added.

Grofers has witnessed a sharp surge in its popularity in the past year as several Indian states enforced strict lockdown restrictions to contain the spread of the virus. Meanwhile, online food delivery platform Swiggy recently said that it will invest $700 million in its express grocery delivery service Instamart as it looks to double down on non-food delivery categories.
