Citizens’ group creates awareness about elections

The civic group Chitlapakam Rising is running a series of videos to fulfill the voting requirement of the house, and to elect candidates to care for the people.

While the three videos released earlier feature a group of children from Chitralapakkam urging people to visit the polling booth and exercise their franchise on 6 April, the other two spoke about how informed choices should be made.

“In these two videos, two Chitralapakkam residents talk about the upcoming elections. One of the two, indifferent to the elections, is planning a tour by taking a holiday on Monday (as many companies have declared an election day – Tuesday – as a holiday; and the preceding Friday is Good Friday, a government holiday). Others are going to live in the city and cast their votes, ”says Sunil Jayaram, a volunteer at Chitlapak Rising. “We have taken this initiative as voters from southern Chennai have been comparatively poor in the last elections.”

The video is also based on other truths, clear but still often overlooked.

“Responsible citizens talk about why voters should go through the election manifesto and know the profile of the candidates who are contesting the election. People are also asked to refuse for free. ”

The fourth video, yet to be released, will focus on what Chitlapakkam residents need in terms of solid waste management, underground sewage systems, piped drinking water supply, maintenance of parks and water bodies, road safety and small bus services.

“The fifth video will give an insight to the candidates contesting from Tambaram constituency,” says Sunil.

Industrial associations carry forward police voter awareness campaign

A signature campaign was conducted on Thursday at the office of the city’s police commissioner and police stations under the Election Commission of India (ECI) Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) program to encourage 100% turnout.

Commissioner of Police Sumit Sharan launched the campaign by signing a board in his office premises. Deputy Commissioner G. Stalin (Law and Order), ES Uma (Crime), R. Mutharasu (traffic) and a. Myilvagan (Headquarters), senior officers and employees working in the office premises also participated in the campaign.

A major program of the ECI for voter education, SVEEP’s main objective was to spread voter awareness and promote voter literacy. It also promotes the principle of ‘Greater Participation for Strong Democracy’.

According to officials, signature campaigns under SVEEP were also conducted at all police stations in Coimbatore city where full participation by employees was ensured. Police personnel, who are staying away from their home constituencies, were also sensitive about postal voting.

He added lists of personnel who would be deputed for various election duties within the city limits.

In Collectorate, District Collector. Rajamani inaugurated a signature campaign and also launched a gas balloon carrying a voter awareness message.

This year, industry associations have joined the vote to create awareness among the public. In a meeting held with industry associations in Coimbatore last week, district officials discussed various ways through which these organizations can conduct awareness programs.

The Coimbatore District Small Industries Association (Codicia) has put up banners near its trade fair premises. Its LED wall displays polling awareness messages. The gas balloon at the collectorate was also sponsored by the association, said Kodia president MV Ramesh Babu. Other associations are also expected to participate in awareness activities.
