  • Google Acquires 1.28% Stake in Bharti Airtel, Invests Up to $1 Billion

    New Delhi, Jan 28: Bharti Airtel and Google on Friday announced a multi-year agreement to boost India’s digital ecosystem, with Sundar Pichai-led tech giant investing $700 million to acquire 1.28 per cent ownership in Airtel and up to $300 million toward commercial agreements.

    The $700 million equity investment in Bharti Airtel is at a price per share of Rs 734, while $300 million will go towards investments in scaling Airtel’s offerings that covers a range of devices to consumers.

    “With our future ready network, digital platforms, last mile distribution and payments ecosystem, we look forward to working closely with Google to increase the depth and breadth of India’s digital ecosystem,” said Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman of Bharti Airtel. Google Maps Now Lets Users in India Save, Share Home Address With Plus Codes.

    This deal will be subject to necessary regulatory approvals.

    As a part of their first commercial agreement, Airtel and Google will work together to build on Airtel’s extensive offerings that covers a range of Android-enabled devices to consumers via innovative affordability programmes.

    “Our commercial and equity investment in Airtel is a continuation of our Google for India Digitisation Fund’s efforts to increase access to smartphones, enhance connectivity to support new business models, and help companies on their digital transformation journey,” said Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet.

    The companies said they will continue to explore further opportunities to bring down the barriers of owning a smartphone across a range of price points, in partnership with various device manufacturers.

    Both companies will also potentially co-create India-specific network domain use cases for 5G and other standards, with cutting-edge implementations.

    Airtel is already using Google’s 5G-ready Evolved Packet Core and Software Defined Network platforms, and plans to explore scaling up the deployment of Google’s network virtualisation solutions to deliver a superior network experience to their customers.

    New Delhi, Nov 25: Telecom operator Bharti Airtel on Thursday said it has conducted India’s first 5G trial in the 700 MHz spectrum band in partnership with Nokia.

    The demonstration, which was conducted on the outskirts of Kolkata, also marked the first 5G trial in the eastern India, the company said in a statement.

    NEW DELHI: Airtel is revising its prepaid plans. The company has increased the pricing of its base plan. Airtel’s 79 Smart Recharge prepaid plan is the new entry-level plan from the company. The new Airtel Prepaid Recharge plan replaces the company’s existing Rs 49 plan, which has been discontinued. According to Airtel, the new Rs 79 Smart Recharge plan offers up to four times more outgoing minutes and double data. Here’s how the new base plan from Airtel competes against the entry-level prepaid plans of rivals Reliance Jio and Vodafone-Idea.
    Reliance Jio offers an entry-level plan of Rs 39, while the entry-level plan from Vi costs Rs 49. Here’s a comparison of all the prepaid plans from the three service providers.

    The new prepaid plan of Rs 79 from Airtel offers 200MB data and talktime of Rs 64. The subscribers will be charged 1 paisa per second for both local and STD calls. This new entry-level plan comes with the validity of 28 days.
    Reliance Jio Rs 39 entry-level prepaid plan
    Designed for JioPhone users the recharge plan of Reliance Jio cost Rs 39. Under the plan, the JioPhone users will have 1400MB data with a daily FUP limit of 100MB. The plan comes with the validity of 14 days and it also offers unlimited local and STD calling. JioPhone users will also get free access to the Jio Suite apps which include JioTV, JioCinema and more.
    Vi Rs 49 entry-level prepaid plan
    Vi offers an entry-level prepaid plan of Rs 49. Under this plan, the Vi subscribers will get talktime of Rs 38 and 100MB data. The users will be charged 2.5 paise per second for the local and STD calls. The plan comes with a validity of 28 days.
    Apart from the above-mentioned plans, both Reliance Jio and Vi also offer corresponding plans of Rs 75 and Rs 79 respectively.
    Rs 75 plan of Reliance Jio
    The entry-level plan of Rs 75 from Reliance Jio is also designed for the JioPhone users. Under this, the Jio users get a total of 3GB data with unlimited calling facility. The plan also offers free access to the Jio Suite apps and comes with the validity of 28 days.
    Rs 79 plan of Vi
    Vi on the other hand also offers a plan of Rs 79 for its subscribers. The plan is valid for a period of 28 days. Same as the Airtel plan, the Vi plan also offers talktime of Rs 64 and 200MB data.

The scam SMS is around eKYC of Vodafone Idea subscribers that is threatening people to submit documents for eKYC verification by calling a certain number within 24 hours of the receipt of the message to avoid discontinuation of services. Note that this message is not sent officially by the company and is being spread by scammers to get hold of personal data to carry out financial scams at a later date.
    “Dear customer, Your Vodafone SIM e-KYC Pending Documents. Call Vodafone helpline no 786XXXXX immediately. Your mobile no. will be stopped 24hr,” reads the scam message. The intention of this message is to scare users into revealing personal details like email ID, contact numbers, address, Aadhaar details, photo, etc.
    The details could be used to carry out other scams and even target a victim’s online banking account. Usually, scams like these are conducted in two stages, where personal data are collected separately to ultimately create a personalised phishing message to harvest online banking details, social media passwords, etc.
    Mobile users are advised to not respond to messages like this or reveal any personal information to anyone over call. In case, you need any help, always visit the official store or call the authorised customer care phone number for support.
    In May, Airtel CEO Gopal Vittal warned the company’s subscribers about a rise in cyber frauds amid a massive surge in online transactions during the second wave of the pandemic. He at the same time asserted that the company is working “relentlessly” and coming out with safety features to ensure customers do not become victims of these frauds.
    Vittal said that there have been some instances of fraudsters calling customers pretending to be Airtel employees and cheating them. In case this happens, immediately call 121. These include EKYC, OTP or any other fraud. “In fact, I would say when in doubt simply call 121,” said Vittal in the letter.

    NEW DELHI: Vodafone Idea has lost the maximum subscribers in April 2021 followed by BSNL and MTNL. As per the latest Telecom Subscription Data released by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), Vodafone Idea lost 18,10, 620 subscribers while BSNL and MTNL lost 13,02,776 and 2,765 subscribers in April 2021. On the other hand, both Airtel and Reliance Jio saw growth in subscriber base.
    Reliance Jio added 47,56,340 new subscribers while Airtel welcomed 5,17,237 new users. Trai in its report said that India got 21,57,112 new mobile subscribers. It also highlighted that 89.80% of mobile subscribers belong to private telcos like Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea while just 10.20% subscribers use BSNL and MTNL services.
    “Total wireless subscribers increased from 1,180.96 million at the end of March-21 to 1,183.11 million at the end of April-21, thereby registering a monthly growth rate of 0.18%,” said Trai.
    It also added that wireless subscription in urban areas increased from 645.20 million at the end of March21 to 645.62 million at the end of April-21 and wireless subscription in rural areas also increased from 535.75 million to 537.49 million during the same period.
    9.67 million submitted their requests for Mobile Number Portability (MNP) in the month of April 2021. “With this, the cumulative MNP requests increased from 576.67 million at the end of March-21 to 586.33 million at the end of April-21, since implementation of MNP,” it said.
    Assam added the maximum mobile subscribers in India with a growth of 1.05% in its wireless subscriber base during April 2021 followed by Kerala, West Bengal, UP (East) and UP (West).
    The report further added that as on 30 April, 2021, the top five Wireless Broadband Service providers were Reliance Jio Infocom Ltd (427.67 million), Bharti Airtel (190.99 million), Vodafone Idea (122.53 million), BSNL (18.49 million) and Tikona Infinet Ltd. (0.32 million).
    As far as wired broadband providers are concerned, the top five Wired Broadband Service providers were BSNL (6.03 million), Bharti Airtel (3.19 million), Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (2.80 million), Atria Convergence Technologies (1.87 million) and Hathway Cable & Datacom (1.08 million).

    NEW DELHI: After Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vi, state-owned telecom operator BSNL has also rolled out a new plan with no daily limit on data.
    The service provider has introduced a new prepaid of Rs 447 for its subscribers. The plan comes with a validity of 60 days and it offers 100GB data with no daily limit. This means that you can use as much data as you want in a day. This plan is similar to the freedom plans introduced by Reliance Jio recently.
    This new data plan from BSNL is presently available only in the Chennai telecom circle. The plan offers a total of 100GB data without any daily FUP limit. The data will be available at a speed of 80 kbps. Along with the data, users will also get unlimited calling facility and 100 SMS per day with the plan. BSNL users will also get BSNL Tunes and Eros Now subscription with the plan. This new telecom plan of BSNL comes with a validity of 60 days.
    Apart from introducing a new plan, BSNL has also revised its Rs 1,999 prepaid plan. Earlier the telco used to offer 2GB data per day under the Rs 1,999 plan. However, it has now removed the daily FUP limit from the plan. After revision the Rs 1,999 plan from BSNL offers 500GB data without any daily limit. The plan also offers 100 SMS per day and unlimited calling facility to the users. The long term plan from BSNL comes with the validity of 365 days.
