Gavaskar made his Test debut against the West Indies on March 6, 1971 at the Port of Spain, Trinidad. During his career, Gavaskar broke the record of many batsmen and established himself as an outstanding batsman.
India visited the West Indies for a five-Test series during the 1970–71 cricket season. The series was one of the most memorable as India won their first Test series against the West Indies.

In his career, Gavaskar played 125 Tests and 108 ODIs for India. He was also part of the 1983 World Cup victory and the 1985 Cricket Championship World Championship.
Gavaskar scored 10,122 runs in the longest format of the game and by 2005 he held the record for most centuries in Test cricket. In 2005, sachin Tendulkar broke this record.
In 108 ODIs, Gavaskar scored 3,092 with his highest score being 103 not out.
