Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting has confirmed that if Steve Smith joins the playing XI, he will bat in the top three in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL 2021). With Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis and South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada and in red-hot form Eric Nortje, Smith will have to knock it out for an overseas spot.
Cricket.com quoted Ponting as saying, “I think he has been released from the franchise for a long time.”
“So, if he gets a chance with us – I think it will be somewhere in the top three – if he gets the chance, I’m sure it will be a great year for us,” he said.
Smith, who had a disappointing IPL season last year, is “very keen” to get out on the field and show what he has got for the Capitals.
Ponting said, “I’ve caught up with him (recently).”
“Obviously the other side of it is a big auction next year, so if he does well in the IPL this year, I’m sure this price will go up for the coming season,” he said. .
The former Australian captain feels that Smith’s presence is enough to make it to the Delhi Capitals camp.

“(This) is very good for him as a part of our squad. As I said – even if he doesn’t play, for example, someone of that kind with his knowledge on sports and T20 games. Ponting said, “would be great for our group. I can’t wait to work with him again. “
Earlier in the day, Nortje and Rabada arrived in Mumbai to join the Delhi Capital (DC) team. DC, led by Rishabh Pant, will start their IPL 2021 campaign against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on April 10 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
