With 490 new infections, officials prepare for a vaccine rollout abroad.
South Korea reported a three-week high of 490 new coronovirus cases on Saturday, with the infection found to be high as officials prepare for a vaccine rollout overseas.
The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) had increased daily changes from 4 midnight to slightly lower than 19 from Friday midnight to just before 19. Of Friday’s total, 474 locally transmitted infections and 16 were imported.
This brings the country’s total coronavirus infections to 95,176, with 1,667 COVID-19 deaths. Around 70% of the cases circulated domestically are from the capital Seoul and its neighboring areas, where about half of the country’s 52 million people live.
The Yonghap news agency reported that South Korea planned to introduce the general public vaccination, which begins with people over 65 years of age.
According to the KDCA, the country has given 583,658 doses of COVID-19vaccines, including AstraZeneca and Pfizer-Bioentecotes, on Friday midnight.
The government said on Friday that it would expand the current social distancing rules, with a ban on private gatherings of more than four people to seal the possibility of a fourth wave of COVID-19 infection in the country.
