According to data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), passenger vehicle (PV) manufacturers shipped more than 2.81 lakh units to dealers in February, an increase of about 18% over the same period last year.
The growth was driven by utility vehicles, with sales up 45.4% to 1.14 lakh units, followed by an increase of nearly 4% in both cars and vans, to 1.55 lakh units and 11,902 units respectively.
Two-wheelers grew by 10.2% to 14.26 lakh units, motorcycles grew by 11.5% to 9.10 lakh units and scooters by 10.9% to 4.64 lakh units. However, three-wheeler sales declined by 33.8% to 27,331 units.
Total vehicle sales rose 10.2% to 17.35 lakh units during February.
SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon said total PV sales for April-February were still below FY16 level and FY14 for two-wheelers. “Supply-chain challenges, including the rising price of steel, the non-availability of semiconductors and high container tariffs, are obstacles to the smooth functioning of the industry,” he said.
