Shivamogga, which gave birth to the farmers’ movements and the Dalit struggle, is hosting the first Raita Mahapanchayat of Southern India on Saturday.
Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait, BKU general secretary Yudhveer Singh, and Darshan Pal, president of the Revolutionary Farmers Union Punjab, who are leading the protest against anti-farmer laws in Delhi, will address the rally at the Science Field in the city.
Samyukta Kisan Morcha, Samyukta Sangharsh Samiti, Karnataka Rajya Sabha Sangha, Hasiru Sene and anti-BJP political parties have joined hands for the rally. Hundreds of farmers from Shivamogga and neighboring districts are expected to participate in the rally.
Shivamogga has a long history of people’s movements. Rayatha was born in the district and gained nationwide attention in 1951 with the Kagodu Satyagraha. This movement inspired many senior socialist leaders including Ram Manohar Lohia to visit the place. Along with that, the Samajwadi movement also received significant support in the district. Delhi’s leaders will travel to Shivamogga by road on Saturday morning. Along the route, hundreds of people will travel with him.
