Names of candidates want to change political party symbols from EVMs with details.
The Supreme Court on Friday asked a petitioner that it wants to replace political party symbols from electronic voting machines with names and details of candidates to serve a copy of their petition to the Attorney General of India.
Chief Justice of India Sharad A. A bench headed by Bobde did not issue a formal notice on the petition of the petitioner, advocate Ashwani Kumar Upadhyay.
“How does the party’s symbol on EVM create prejudice?” Chief Justice Bobde asked senior advocate Vikas Singh for Mr. Upadhyay.
Mr. Singh replied, “Voters will cast their votes based on the intrinsic value of the candidate, not on the basis of the popularity of the political party.”
Mr. Singh said that the petitioner had earlier written to the Election Commission but received no reply.
“It will help voters to vote for and support intelligent hardworking and honest candidates, which is not possible in today’s scenario. This will not only eliminate casteism and communalism from our democracy, but will also control black money and benami transactions in elections. Ballot and EVMs without the symbol of the political party will control the dictatorship of political party owners in ticket distribution and force them to give tickets to religious parties, which work for religious welfare.
