Samsung launches radical new Android phone but it’s not what fans were hoping for

Samsung has just held another one of its famous Unpacked events with the Korean technology giant revealing a very unique Android device. Based on its latest Galaxy Z Flip3, this new “Bespoke Edition” actually allows you to design your own phone before it’s made and shipped out in the post.

Favourite colours can be chosen then mixed and matched to suit your style with Samsung boasting that it will offer over 45 different combinations.

Once a pattern has been picked Samsung then turns the creation into a real phone which is then be delivered directly to your front door.

“We know our customers see cutting-edge technology as a way to express themselves”, said Conor Pierce, Corporate Vice President UK & Ireland, Samsung Electronics. “At Samsung, we believe their technology should reflect their lifestyle, and we’re proud to continuously develop new technologies to suit customers’ needs, preferences, and lives. Now, we’re excited to introduce the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition — which provides our customers with the ultimate form of self-expression thanks to its new range of exciting colourways.”

Along with that custom look, the Z Flip3 Bespoke Edition offers all of the features found on the standard model including a 6.7-inch screen that folds in half and a dual-lens rear camera.

There’s also a fast Qualcomm processor, wireless charging, fingerprint scanner and it’s now fully water-resistant which is pretty impressive for a foldable phone.

Clearly, this is great news for anyone who fancies a fully customised smartphone but it’s not exactly what many had been hoping for.

It was rumoured that Samsung would use its October event to launch a budget version of its popular Galaxy S21.

This FE (Fan Edition) version would make sense with Samsung launching something similar last year via its popular Galaxy S20 FE.

Leaks had revealed that the S21 FE could get a triple-lens camera, speedy Qualcomm processor and edge-to-edge display and all at a cheaper price than the current S21 flagship.

It now seems that Samsung has delayed the launch of this device with one tech tipster suggesting it won’t arrive until 2022.

Jon Prosser, who has a pretty good track record for getting things right, recently posted a message on Twitter which said: “Samsung’s S21 FE is delayed until January, as far as I know. Launch is rescheduled for January 11, 2022.”

If you want a phone to suit your style then the Bespoke Edition may certainly appeal, but for those wanting flagship specs on a budget it seems there’s a little longer to wait for Samsung’s next Fan Edition device.
