Samsung has just announced its all-new range of bendable smartphones and one of these devices has a very neat trick up its sleeve that finally solves an annoying issue with all Android smartphones. The new Galaxy Z Fold 3 is not only the first bendy device to get a full IPX 8 water resistance rating but it also features a screen that now hides the selfie camera.
Ever since smartphone manufacturers ditched the bezels and switched to an all-screen look there’s been an issue finding somewhere subtle to place the selfie snapper.
Since the introduction of bezel-free smartphones, we’ve seen manufacturers trying numerous concepts including notches, pop-up mechanisms, cameras that flip and designs that punch through the screen.
Samsung even launched a bunch of unique desktop patterns which attempted to disguise the in-screen camera and make it look much less obvious. Although front cameras have got smaller they remain pretty annoying especially when trying to watch an evening of Netflix as they often stand out like a giant spot on your face.
Luckily Samsung has now fixed this problem with the selfie snapper magically disappearing behind the foldable 7.6-inch Infinity Flex Display. With minimum pixels applied on top of the camera hole, Samsung says its Galaxy Z Fold3 features an increased viewing area so users get an unbroken canvas for their favourite apps.

The company calls it a “Camera Under Panel” or CUP design, and it means there’s no need for notches or holes interrupting your phone screen. Instead, the camera is “virtually invisible to the eye”, because it’s located underneath the screen.
Pulling this off took loads of advanced tech to make sure the picture quality stays high even from under a 400ppi screen. Xiaomi created a new material as well as special circuitry and algorithms to make sure the camera could still pick up light, colour and detail.
