Wearing a hijab and holding the Quran with her right hand, Ms. Hasan vowed to uphold the country’s constitution

61-year-old Samia Sulhu Hassan made history on Friday when she was sworn in as the first female President of Tanzania at the State House government offices in the country’s largest city of Dar es Salaam.

Wearing a hijab and holding a Quran with her right hand, Ms. Hassan was sworn in to uphold the country’s constitution. The inauguration was witnessed by the Chief Justice and members of the Cabinet of the East African country. Former Tanzanian presidents Ali Hassan Mweni, Zakaya Kivete and Abid Karume were also present.

The ceremony was held indoors and no one wore a facemask to protect against COVID-19.
