Urdu writer Hafiz Karnataka from Shikarpur has been selected for the Sahitya Akademi’s Bal Sahitya Puraskar. Fakr-e-Watan, A work on India’s freedom fighters.
Mr. Karnatki, 57, began his literary career as a poet in the 1980s and later turned to writing for children. So far, he has authored 94 books. He has translated many verses from Basavanna and Akkamahadevi and has written the works of Kuvempu in Urdu.
Born into a family of teachers, he developed an interest in literature at an early age. He became a teacher in a government primary school in 1987 and worked in various places before resigning from the job in 2006.
He now looks after his educational institute, which provides education to 3,000 girls in Shikaripura. He also served as the President of Karnataka Urdu Academy. Some students have done PhD on their literature. Seeing his contribution in the field of literature, Gulbarga University awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2013.
After the Sahitya Akademi announced the award on Friday, calls came from different parts of the country to congratulate him. “I am receiving congratulatory messages from many people. The first to call me were the scholars who studied my literature for a PhD, ”he said Hindu on the phone.
Mr. Karnatki wants to hit a century by bringing six more books soon, as he has already published 94 compositions. “The children of the present generation are smarter than me. I want to write for them on the values they have to develop at an early age. The award offers a cash prize of ₹ 50,000 in addition to a memento.
