Ruth Chepgateich of Kenya broke the women’s half marathon world record on Sunday in an hour and four minutes and in Istanbul in two seconds. The marathon world champion sliced almost half a minute from the previous best mark of 1hr 4:31 set by Ababel Yeshan of Ethiopia in February 2020 in the United Arab Emirates.

26-year-old Chepnagich was placed third by Yelmezer Yehulav (1hr 4:40) of Ethiopia with Helen Obiri in Kenya in 1hr 4:51.

By winning the race for the third time after 2017 and 2019, he made it clear for Yehlavas to make his place in the record books in the final stages.

It was the first time the three women finished in a half marathon within 65 minutes.

World record holder Kibiwot Kandi won the men’s race in a course record of 59: 35 seconds.
