Wales manager Ryan Giggs, who was arrested on suspicion of assault in November, will be on leave for the start of his team’s World Cup campaign on Wednesday, Welsh football chiefs announced. The arrest of the former Manchester United star, 47, came after an alleged row with girlfriend Kate Grayville. Last month, he increased his bail till May 1. Giggs, who denies the assault charges, will be replaced by Robert Page, who also assumed a caretaker charge for the League of Nations fixtures of Wales in November.

There is doubt about his continued absence whether he will lead his country to Euro 2020, which will start in June.

“The Football Association of Wales and Ryan Giggs have agreed that he will not attend the upcoming international camp,” an FAW statement said.

“Robert Page will take over for the next three matches against Belgium, Mexico and the Czech Republic and will be supported by Albert Stuvenberg as it did during the last international window in November.”

Page Oversø won against Ireland and Finland in November as Wales were promoted to the top tier of the League of Nations.

The former Wales international, 46, will now take over the Dragons opening two World Cup qualifiers this month.

Promoted

Wales began their Group E campaign for the top-ranked Belgium worldwide, before hosting the Czech Republic in Cardiff on 24 March.

Mexico is also due to play a friendly match in Cardiff on 27 March. Page will announce his team for all three games on Monday.
