The Delhi government on Saturday launched an ‘Education Mentoring Program’ through its ‘Youth for Education’ initiative, which focuses on mentioning girls studying in class 9 to 12 in government schools.
“BTech, MTech, PhD and MBA students of Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical Women’s University will refer to these students. Education Minister Manish Sisodia said that the mentor would encourage girls to actively participate in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and to appear for entrance examinations for higher education.
He said that the mentor will guide them in choosing a career suitable for innovation.
“Our world is becoming a knowledge economy, dedicated research and innovation are fast becoming the keys to progress. Although our nation is witnessing some major innovations in every field of work, these innovations are led mostly by men. When it comes to innovation, the participation of women, especially in the field of STEM, is very less. According to a study I came across recently, women are only 33% of the total workforce in research and innovation in STEM in South Asia.
