President of Nepal calls an all-party meeting amid political crisis

Leading leaders of the Nepal faction of CPN-UML – Madhav Kumar Nepal and Jhalnath Khanal also demanded the resignation of Mr. Oli as Prime Minister.

To make the situation worse, the Supreme Court recently quashed the merger of CPN-MC with CPN-UML. The two parties merged in May 2018 to form a unified Nepal Communist Party following the victory of their alliance in the 2017 general elections.

After the meeting, Nepal said that its faction asked Mr. Oli to rescind his decision and restore the party structure that existed prior to the merger of UML with the CPN-Maoist Center.

On Friday, 23 leaders of the Maoist Center were nominated to a meeting of the CPN (UML) central committee led by Prime Minister Oli, which included ministers in the party’s central committee, which was opposed by the faction party. Deputy parliamentary party leader Subas Chandra Nembang said that differences between the two factions cannot be resolved. The establishment faction told the rival faction that the Supreme Court’s decision to cancel the integration between UML and CPN-MC was an opportunity to take the party forward in a united manner.
