Police use water canon due to violent German lockdown protests

With Germany in the fourth month of lockdown and vaccination efforts, many, from shopkeepers to holiday makers, are increasingly resting on the lack of a clear path to return, compared to Britain and the United States.

Germany police deployed watercannon and pepper spray after a gathering of some 20,000 protesters against lockdown and other coronovirus regulations, Germany turned violent, with some protesters throwing up on police.

Protesters from across Germany gathered in the central city of Kassel for the march, organized by the “Querdanker” – “Lateral Thinkers” – online conspiracy movement.

“Bottles were thrown and efforts were made to remove the bottlenecks,” police said on Twitter.

Police said the protesters defied instructions that ensured the safety of people, including refusing to wear facemasks and following socially perverse guidelines.

The protesters carried placards reading “No compulsory” and “Democracy will not tolerate censorship”.

The marchers faced counter-protesters wearing face masks, one of which grabbed a placard reading “Vaccination”.

National and regional leaders are on Monday to consult on the next steps in the national lockdown. But with the number of rapidly increasing cases leading to the spread of more infectious variants, many politicians are saying that it is too early to reduce the restrictions.
